I wanted to discuss the ever-popular confusion behind why fursuits cost so much! I get questions about this topic all the time- So let’s talk about it! All thoughts/opinions expressed are my own, based on my experience having made 3 fursuit partials, and my experience in the fandom.

I have a few tips on buying suit materials and some other stuff- uhh...some on saving money I guess??
The highest quality materials are always recommended as they look best and are safer, but if you wanna find a few cheaper alternatives to little stuff like foam, elastic, fleece- etc, I recommend buying stuff that stuff from sites like Amazon and EBay
For head bases, look in the clearance section of fursuit supply websites, you might find something nice! But be ready to put a lot of effort into fixing it up, clearance bases are usually mis-casts or discontinued bases
I recently bought all the materials for a suit and hoped to put it together myself (I’m now paying a maker friend to put it together), I have a friend who makes bases who gave me a hyena miscast they made whilst testing out their casting stuff for mega cheap, I fixed it up and made it into a lizard, due to the fact it had no actual nose :(
Talk to makers about where they get their fur, if they live in the same country as you they’re most likely to order their fur from a retailer in your country- I’m British and my British maker friends always buy fur from Mohair, a great fabric supplier that stocks some great quality furs, since it’s in the same country as me I get free shipping on furs, have a look around at retailers in your country and they might just offer free shipping! Which saves a little money-
I recommend splashing out on things like fur, you want your suit to look nice and be good quality, I know I’m offering advice here on how to save money but like- super low quality furs look terrible and I believe the fur itself can fall out, which can get inside the head and get quite dangerous
I also recommend buying fur in bulk, save your scraps! You never know when you might need them!
Finally, you don’t need a suit - suits are nice and all but they’re hella expensive and I don’t recommend getting one until you are financially stable, fursuits are a luxury, if you commission someone be willing to splash out, these people are professionals and they’re gonna work hard as heck to make sure your suit is perfect
Eh that’s it I guess-
Pixel These are some FANTASTIC points!! Especially your last point- fursuits are a LUXURY ITEM. Nobody *needs* one, so you should be absolutely sure you’re financially stable before making a $500+ investment!
I personally have bills to pay, and I need to be sure I can afford to eat and take care of weekly/monthly expenses before anything else. It’s 100% okay to save up for a suit by putting money away from each paycheck, but don’t put yourself into debt for a suit!
I also super agree about your thoughts on materials! Some items can be purchased cheap and the quality isn’t really effected (like foam or cheap fleece)- but don’t skimp on big details like fur, teeth, etc! You’ll only end up making your beautiful suit look cheap too. Another item I recommend buying is a VERY nice set of clippers for shaving your fur!! You’ll save yourself soooo much heartache when you know you’ll get a nice shave. I use an Andis Propet clipper, and I got mine for around $70. Worth every penny!!
Thanks a ton for sharing your thoughts!!
Shark Pupp oh damn I completely forgot to talk about clippers!
I would complain to myself about makers being super pricy, but wow, this has really changed my mind about doing that. I highly respect makers and understand why their suits cost so much now. Thanks for making this video!
Bananxai Smoothie I’m so glad! There’s a lot more to fursuit work than I think many people realize. Supplies alone are often at least 50% of my total project cost!
Hey just wanna let you know that I love your videos and I love all of your fur suits! ❤️❤️ keep up the good work 😊
Kuda Creations Thank you!! I’d love to start doing more videos in the future- positive feedback is definitely important; I’d love to do more videos if folks like them!
- Because of the cost of materials, the time to create one, it's hard to make.
Jr Ell Exactly! They’re not easy to make, and that time and effort comes at a cost!
Hi there star pup!! so glad i found this video! It is so hard to get price break downs on making fursuits and yes there is so much criticism thrown at fursuit makers.
And even then most are missing so many things. I am so glad you talked about bills and rent and living. Just one thing i wanted to point out, If fursuit makers charge properly as an official business, the hourly making cost is DIFFERENT to the profit. the time spent x the hourly cost is called labour wage or salary which goes towards the makers personal budget for food, personal rent, living and leisure , clothes car etc . the profit is an added percentage generally between 30 and 60% which goes straight back into the company's budget to pay for the company's evolution, trial run materials, in a way it also covers a bit of all the hours spent on trial and error, patterning, marketing sales, improving things for the business etc.
Price of fursuits or parts must also include location costs( rent of specially rented place to work or share in personal rent if working from home) electricity / gas bills ( all if specially rented for that or a share of personal bills if at home) and all shares of all the reusable tools (sewing machines, glue guns etc and all the little things too, calculated by cost of item and their expected minimum life span or time limit you choose to pay these items off in and start putting aside to buy new in case of breakdown or want to upgrade... the calculation is then established per month and divided by number of items you can construct/ sell per month ).
AAAAAANNND the most depressing.... taxes and pension / medical plans etc.... price has to include a share in the taxes and plans that the company will have to pay at the end of the year...
. I am only just starting to set myself up as a fursuiter, still on the learning curve .... but the pricing is the biggest problem mentally. it gets so expensive if you want to pay yourself correctly.
It is so hard to see how many fursuiters underprice by lack of knowledge on how to price, lack of self confidence ( and YES loved that you said fursuiters are artisans!!!!! YES YES, so a special craft deserving more than minimum wage!!!! Officially we are the boss , CEO of our business even if it is a small one. What CEO is paid minimum wage???)
and for those running an official business with all the associated costs it is so hard to compete with those who are just underpricing and those that don't declare and so don't have the weight of taxes, which for us in europe sits around 15 to 20% of part of income.
Hi there! When it comes to business ventures, you're barking up the wrong tree here-- I operate as a "hobbyist" legally as per the way I operate (not necessarily to make a profit, my income is not dependent on my art, etc). You're 100% correct in your statements about those who DO make a business venture out of suit making, they absolutely should be charging even more!
Thanks for the video! 💯😎
Really appreciate it! UwU 💚💙
Hey, I follow your Instagram. Happy I found you on UA-cam ☺️
Candy_2004 Aww, thanks a ton for stopping by!!
Me, a kid who cant get a job, broke as heck.
Make your own suit then! :)
Pain and agony. No. Making and sewing and carving and MORE. SEWING. Is a lot of work and fur is kinda expensive especially wild colors.
Mine cost 300$ so thankfully I got it cheap but it looks good
Found you channel from insta
Austin Huffman Aaaa thanks for stopping by!!
i bought 4 yards of fur and it costed me 200 dollars! im from europe, and its hard to find good suppliers here that offer many colors. The shipping and customs was about 120 dollars, and the rest was the fur...
GIB Yup, that sounds about right! Good fur isn’t cheap, and international shipping is super pricey!
I'm from europe too! (Poland) So I looked up fur on allegro, and it was less pricey, still being good quality!
Hiya where do you make ur suits? Do you sell them on a site
Halo Little paw I’m confused- I just make my suits in my home? and I don’t have a site where I sell suits- each one can take up to a month to complete so that’s not realistic.
I just was wondering cause if you did sell them I would of been coolio cause ur suit is beautifully made XD
Me when I find out they cost so much:ok I’m selling my house
Yeeeeeah, custom wearable artwork that takes like 60 hours to make is expensive!
Omg your furry mask is so cute lets just look at her masl how beautiful
It's called a fursuit :)
$15 for shipping, so they don't dent your cloth in transit?
Actually postage is universally priced by the weight of the item. The heavier the item, the pricier the shipping. Faux fur is a heavy weight fabric :)
Ok this is of topic but I really wanna hold your puffy paws
Haha, they're super soft!
yeah why?
We should call the fursuit your wearing star moon dog
Her name is Jelly lol
@@starpupstudio oh lol
