To all those who wanted to know, it had a magnetic snap-on mechanism that was shown in the video that positioned the device on the right location of the mat which was followed by the swirl sound.
- Wireless charging requires more power to charge the same amount, since they are less effective. - If you have a wireless charger that can only charge on device; instead of having the cable plugged into the charger, plug it straight into your phone; faster charging, less waste of energy. - The common argument for why wires are annoying, is because you have to plug and unplug it from the wall ... just don't unplug it from the wall then. Oh man Powermat, that's some nostalgia straight to the veins. I had a touch and was constantly wanting one of these just because they seemed so futuristic. I only just got wireless charging in the last year, and it's exactly as awesome as I always dreamed.
I actually remember seeing this charging mat. From what I remember, you had to buy special "adapters" (or back-plates) for each device you wanted to charge on it.
Bro my family had this exact same thing! I had a case for my IPod touch that you could just throw on the mat and it worked as well as the wall. Thank you for the throwback.

the part that you missed is they sold phone specific battery covers that would convert the phone to wireless charging and you could use it with the power mat. You do understand that and 2009 they didn't have the receiver built into every device like they have to day so your phone would have to have a back pack case to receive the power and you need the charging dock to receive the power but at least it got rid of the chords even if you needed a docking station. Or maybe you don't understand how the system works. You could add "not bad for the time" to the end, instead of tossing it out the window.
Coming back to these videos is like finding that one last can of soda in your fridge that you forgot about a year ago, exactly when you were craving it. Delish!
I remember seeing a big display for this at a computer store when I was a kid. They even had a spokeswoman from the company there too. Even back then I didn't get the point, it just adds another step after plugging the wire into the device (or using a super bulky case on already bulky 2000s electronics)
Here in Canada, they sold those for years. Eventually one of my friends got the DS lite battery adapter, it was futuristic to drop the console onto the charger before bed ! But it bulked up the DS quit a bit... Awesome throwback !
Oh my god I used to have one of these and never got a special case for my phone so it literally was just a regular charger with extra steps, what a throwback
This company was bought by Duracell a couple years later. I used to have one of these mats and a phone case for iPhone 4, and the little charging brick which was a power bank that charged from it. It was amazing. I loved it so much. And it made a little noise when you put it to charge.
He broke the thing to get it to fit for nothing. At 8:38 you can see that he could have put that thing on and then it would be to high for the support thing and it would work.
I remember these actually. My recollection is that they also sold these enormous cases that you'd entomb your ipod, ds, phone, etc into and use those to charge
Could someone explain to me why wireless charging is such a big deal? I get wanting to get rid of wires, but it ties your phone down more than a cable...
Lots of benefits, you don’t damage or scratch your phone by trying to plug a wire in, and putting it on a surface to charge eliminates this risk, also it’s easier to use in the dark or something, and a cable won’t pull your device off a table or anything.
Amoraxus Uhh, by scraping the charger on the charging port to plug it in? It happened on my OnePlus 5? It probably shows why some phones are poorly designed because most people lack common sense lol.
I remember having the 2 device model of this as a teenager, it sounded MUCH cooler than it actually was. I had one of those little ipod stands for my ipod touch, and another puck with a tiny micro usb cable running off of it for my android cell phone because they only made wireless charge cases for the iphone models at that time. Its funny you note how sharp the edges are on the power brick, i used to run my fingers over the edge constantly, as well as constantly making that generic charge bloop noise every time you put something on the pad or took it off.
Ooh I worked at The Source when these were being sold! There was a wall of powermat compatible cases (think Otterbox but less skookum) for the most popular handheld devices. The gimmick was you had to have a powermat mat AND case on your device to be able to charge and the cases were absurdly expensive for what they were, AND rather bulky. That and as the number of devices constantly grew so did the wall space for all the powermat accessories / cases. Eventually it got too much and it turned into "you can order it in" which I never had anybody do. Finally we just stopped stocking any PowerMat stuff in store because, frankly, nearly everyone who expressed interest in one, at least at my store, swiftly lost interest when they learned they would need a case for their phone to allow it to be powermat compatible. Also, early power mats were PMA, not Qi compatible, so when the iPhone and Samsung phones started having wireless charging built in consumers looked for charging mats that would work natively, without the extra accessories. Eventually the PMA standard got mothballed and Qi won out.
I have never even owned an ipod, but I just found this channel - and let me tell you I'm ABSOLUTELY HOOKED.

I get wanting to get rid of wires, but it ties your phone down more than a cable...
if you just want the device charging, just laying it onto a dedicated surface is easier than plugging a cable in. minor difference but hey
Amoraxus Well that’s your problem, also, it’s called anodised metal/aluminium. It’s hard to plug your phone charger in whilst in the dark.
"No spaghetti" Is the best thing of the whole product.
Holy hell. I scared my family and my dog with how hard I was laughing at "DONG?" Everything hurts but my God that was the funniest thing.
What scares me I thought this was a skateboard that charges your ipod, and the fact that one likely exist.
Your growing so much man! We need more
8:33 Probably for iPods with a case that prevents it from docking fully.
I'm convinced he's actually H2B with the sounds he makes at the end
You literally crack me up omfg 😂😂
