    OK I'll try. Some stereotypes in our country is - a lot of people think that "Philippines is a dangerous country."
    I hope people will get to visit our country so they can see that we are also friendly and hospitable.
    It's more fun in the Philippines. :)

    The two stereotypes in Russia that instantly came to my mind while I was watching the video are:
    1. Men are better drivers than women.
    In fact, the statistics prove that it is quite the opposite - women drive more cautiously and therefore have fewer accidents on the road, while men's driving style is usually more aggressive, hence a probability of accidents is higher.
    2. Women with blond hair are less smart than those who have dark hair.
    I had been a blondie for several years. I wouldn't say, I had lost any of my mental abilities back then. )) However, I must admit that having blond hair has its obvious pros, such as getting away with something only because people have lower expectations for you. Sometimes, I think that this stereotype was invented by the blondies themselves. ;)

    • @MadEnglishTV
      @MadEnglishTV  7 років тому +6

      lol that's great! 😄 Lower expectations is always a good thing! 😛 I have a feminist friend who always reminds me that white males have "special privilege" in society. In her mind, white men are born without any struggles in life and will be rich and successful automatically. But I've been so sick for most of my life that my success has never reached the level that it's "supposed" to. 😔 Hopefully one day my skin colour and gender will start working in my favour. 😂
      About the women drivers. Here in Canada women pay much less in car insurance because they are statistically better drivers. When it all comes down to it, insurance companies only care about statistics...so my gender is actually working against me there too. Haha. My life would be a lot easier if I had been born a dark-skinned woman. 😄😄

    • @julianovo7237
      @julianovo7237 7 років тому +1

      I have to disagree, I don't think that lower expectations are always good. For instance, you have already mentioned non-native English teachers and how they are treated in some places. )
      I don't quite believe in that "special privilege" theory, either. Evey person is born with a potential to succeed in something. The thing is that not all people have a necessary level of determination or the ability to calculate risks. Besides, we often make bad career choices and get stuck in jobs which, we don't like, for too long.
      As for being born a dark-skinned woman, everything is relative, right?
      Btw, men and women in Russia are equally charged in car insurance.

    • @MadEnglishTV
      @MadEnglishTV  7 років тому +3

      Haha, yes everything is relative! 😄
      That's cool that insurance companies are fair in Russia! 😃

    Hi there! I've been teaching this topic at college for a couple of years. I can say that for sure there are pros and cons in this issue. The good side is that stereotypes help us to react immediately and be ready for dangerous situations. But on the other hand of course people who believe in stereotypes have narrow thinking. And also it could lead to xenophobia, rasism and other bad stuff.
    There are lots of stereotypes in my country (Ukraine). The most popular are that gypsy always steal something, jewish people are sly. Also in our old ethnic literature russian soldiers sedused girls and after that left them alone with babies and so on.
    I beleive only in my own experience not in stereotypes. One day I had conversation with the guy from Argentina who was jewish and the girl from Marocco who was muslim. I was so pleased that they don't have this stereotype thinking to each other. I am proud of them and wish more people have the same way of thinking. Nowadays we have globalization and there is no place for stereotypes!

    In my country Morocco, there're many stereotypes like:
    - women are bad drivers;
    - women schould stay in house and men work;
    - men are always smarter than women...etc.
    Vocabulary:
    stereotype, belief, to make an assumption that is too broad.

    I don't know any stereotypes in my country, it depends on personality. Our population good educated. But I have several stereotypes: the best singers are Africans ( voice so deeper, widely as if it from thire lungs), the slums in India, Phillipines never disappeared.
    I have known lots of people in the world have stereotypes about my country - Kazakhstan is as Afghanistan, because the second part of name "stan".
    We have no any common sings with Afghanistan.
    We have known that Canada is a multicultural country with a huge territory (the 1st place in the world, maybe 2nd). For the last severel years Canadian population increase to about 33 mln. There are lots migrants from India,Arabic country, Ukraine, Russia etc etc.
    Mark, thanks for today's lesson. You are how always discuss the interesting questions.

      Thank you so much Nora! I don't know very much about Kazakhstan...except that the Kazakh government got angry at the Borat movie. 😂

    • @МобилаМобила-о4ж
      @МобилаМобила-о4ж 7 років тому +1

      It's not true. Was angry to Borat our population, but our leader told:"It's the best advertising!". I agree, because the bad information is spreaded with the sounds of speed. So Borat's information was needed for us as a air. If before him knew about Kazakhstan so small of group, after him have known others. However lots well-educated people know nothing about Kazakhstan.
      I think that man at the picture will take part in election, but he didn't won. It's a play in tolerance or a political equal ... it is my opinion. Sorry, please, me, Mark! I've been studying English, so I would be written as lots of words as its possible.

    Hi Mark , first of all thank you for this not only funny but also interesting class!
    I am from Colombia and a very common stereotype in my country is that women are worse in jobs than the men and to me that is ridiculous , even they are better working , driving, studying, they are so careful and organized . I dont know why these kind of stereothyps even exist.
    Another stereotype here is that assian and northamerican peaple are not friendly persons and obviously is a lie, my sister is studying right know there in canada and she tells me they are absolutely kind and she even tells me assians are extraordinary persons so as we can see most of stereotyps are justo assumptions and lies.
    to finish my idea i think all of this is because the garbage and horrible programs we watch on tv, so think we should read more and watching less tv. Books, I love you!!

    I don't know if this can be considered stereotype. Do correct me if I'm wrong. From my observation, when it comes to a relationships, people always have a say when it comes to "MAY-DECEMBER AFFAIR." This is when the guy falls for the girl almost half his age and marry her. And vice versa. They will always say that man were blinded or worse thing is that the girl have potion him, bewitched him or hypnotized him LOL 😳😳
    In this case, most negative comments were thrown directly to the woman. Their families can't accept it sometimes especially on the men's side. I think the idea comes from the belief that man should be ahead of everything. He should be older, stronger or wiser in his family.. Isn't more happier if they just share responsibilities regardless of their age difference?. ..As long as there's respect, love acceptance, life can be as normal as anyone else.. Just saying🤔😊😇😇 Have a great day!

    Most people around the world see Brazil as the land of Soccer, Samba ,BOssa Nova etc. BUt no! Brazil is a multicultural country. IN the NOrth region most population is from indigenous race. they look like mexicans, BOlivians etc and they love latin music since they're close to Central America . Northeast region has the largest Black population of Brazil and they love Forró and Brega (another kinds of Brazilian music) but the south region is dominated by White people. Brazil has the largest german colony of the world and the second largest italian colony of the world . i look like a dutch when i travelled to Asian no one dared to say I was a Brazilian. they thought I was an American or European, and ONly after showing my passport they finally could believe I am a Brazilian. São Paulo , Rio de JAneiro , Belo horizonte cities are in the southeast region. where you can find all types of races, including the largest JApanese colony of the world, caucasians, Blacks and indigenous race too. It's not everybody who likes soccer in Brazil and samba is a rythm specifically from Rio. brazil has a false stereotype that everybody is black and likes soccer and samba. Brazil is more similar to a continent than a country.

      Mad English TV you're always welcome to Brazil . but as you said for you to know Brazil truly you must travel to all regions otherwise you will not know the real Brazil but just a specific region. And will help endorse this false Brazilian stereotype when you go home . Here in Brazil we also have Octoberfest. German architecture etc search about German colony in Brazil, if you want you can also search about Japanese and Italian colonies here in Brazil. besides there are many Chineses and Lebaneses that have been moving to Brazil in the last 10 years . the only country, in my humble opinion that is similar to Brazil in this mixture of races is USA.

      That's great! 😃 I didn't know Brazil was so multicultural. I have a friend from Japan and she told me that there were a lot of Brazilians living in Japan. Why do Japan and Brazil have a special relationship?

    • @O-CONSERVADOR-CAPITALISTA
      @O-CONSERVADOR-CAPITALISTA 7 років тому +2

      Mad English TV hehehe that's true but I think there are more Japaneses in Brazil than Brazilians there. Well it's because Japan is now going through a better moment in its economy . Brazil is starting to emerge from an economic crisis that began in 2012. The same what had happened to USA and some part of the globe in the economic crisis in 2008. Brazil lived boom in economic growth in the last decade it reached the position of the 6th richest country of the world. And because of this crisis we are now in 7th or 8th place. But many world economists predict Brazil as the fourth richest country in 20 to 30 years, including overcoming Japan. so the Brazilians and Japaneses are always switching countries depending on the present moment. But white people and the Japaneses here in Brazil are the richest people. Japanese have lands, farms, stores, factories etc. Totally different than the Chineses who are poor. But Mark the big difference between Brazil and japan is the social inequality. Brazil has from billionaires, millionaires, wealthy people by middle class, poverty and misery. So you'll meet a beggar and just 50 miles away you'll see a man driving his ferrari. Japan is much more balanced. the difference between the poor and rich is shorter. So that's why I think for a Brazilian who's very poor it's better to live in Japan where the difference between poverty and wealth is smaller than Brazil. Here you can find people from all social classes easily. So probably Brazil has more millionaires and poor people than Japan counting the percentage since the population of Brazil is much larger than the Japanese one
