Although I’m a little unsettled that it looks like you’re already better at stagger putting than me, HUUUGE thanks for the shout out, and I hope it helps you bang those earth friendly putts!!!
Al G Rhythm showed me your reviews. Good stuff!
A friend told me long ago that the key to making more putts is to drive better....
Haha! Best advice ever!
That’s is like saying your best defense is good offense for basketball
Happy Gilmore: ya know thats a lot easier then putting, maybe i should just try to do that everytime
Haha he’s not lying
I find my approach shots are deadly, but if i had better drives i would eliminate the need for approach shots alltogether. Funny because whats an approach shot but a short drive without the pressure. I think my main issue is pressure related.
Aiming through basket, or at the chains on the back side, is really helpful in competitive situations. Since, for me at least, nerves can make me putt more timidly and draw front iron. A guy gave me that tip mid tourny and it actually really helped.
One of my good friends mentioned the "Shake hands with the basket" tip and that has been my go to for anyone who asks me for advice.
Shake hands goes with the drag perfectly.
I had a practice basket that was REALLY loud and ringy, so I wrapped the portion of the pole behind the chains with clear self-fusing silicone tape. It didn't change the look or performance of the basket but it did drastically cut down on the volume. I'm sure my neighbors appreciated it.
I got a Facebook ad the other day for someone selling basically that exactly
Your neighbors would love me I cant hit the chains
I zip tied a towel around the center pole. Quiets it way down
Never end your practice without making all of your putts consecutive from challenging distance(s). 5-8 putters or so. Can keep you out there getting frustrated for an extra hour but makes for better pressure putt practice.
This is a good one. Nothing feels worse than missing that final putt though😂
I always like The Patriot approach: “aim small, miss small”
This is a tip from Calving Heimburg. When practicing putts, go through your whole rutine before every putt. Do not just throw putts after another. This will boost your confidence on the green. Helped me a lot
But that music tho right?? So good!!! Had me dancin and bee boppin around!
OMG. I put this to the test on a Black Hole Mini in my house and can confirm these tips scale down nicely. Nice work, Jess!
Neighbors are probably saying “what the heck is that sound all day??” 😂
If all you hear are chains in any neighborhood consider yourself lucky! ;)
I have a neighbor that has a small dog that freaks the fuck out everytime there is even a small noise outside. Good thing they are away most of the time cause nothing takes you out of your practice mindset more then giving a dog a seizure everytime you put.
@@Babl069 depends on how you feel about the neighbor I guess... ;)
The one tip that helped me with edge of circle and circle two putts was what was called Pro power, I can't remember who labeled it that, but the ultimate premise is the strength and speed you putt at if you miss should be 10 to 15 ft past the basket. This was very helpful for me especially since most my missed putts were hitting the cage or lower.
I didn't really think about this, but I can make every 15 foot putt, and 90% of 20 foot putts. I should be using that kind of power. Interesting idea!
“Imagine sliding the disc on a table” - L64 Tomas. This one helps me and almost reminds me of playing table shuffleboard
Killer tip from Tomas!
That 2 second focus and pullback is great! I don't know why, but my putting is more consistent after doing that. Thanks for sharing! I am digging the content. You are a brave man to ask for advice on the internet LOL
I love your videos and I follow on my personal and business accounts. Where are you from because Im starting my own disc golf channel and i love the cinematic look your videos have. I would love to play a round with you and even help you shoot and learn a few things especially considering ill be shooting alot of the stuff just by myself.
I’ve heard all these but the 2 second rule. I will practicing that one today. I think the combination of these put together becomes kicked memory and improves putting.
The best way I feel to control your putter have equal pressure through all fingers I’m hitting 30’s 8/10 as average but I’ve only been playing for a year truly I’ve only just played 5 times total this year (at courses) I’m actually now starting on my left hand I’m seeing if I can do the same drills and I’m improving by triple what I thought with my left arm put!!! It feels great to put them in every time so that’s what I finish on every time is the most comfortable last rep of puts.
All I can ask for is everyone have fun putting while practicing, you can even make it a game but one you really want to win!!
I love this disc golf community and it’ll grow even stronger with everyone of you!!!
The best tip in discgolf I ever got was to put more of the fleshy part of my hand near my thumb on top of the disc. When I first started all of my discs had a tendency to come out nose up. I worked on everything from run up to reach back and nothing changed. I learned this and it completely changed the game for me. Implemented it into my putting as well and I can now hit puts 40+ feet out. Also went from a max distance of 200 ish feet to 300+ instantly.
Drag the disc into the basket, helped me personally. Even with upshots or drives the thought of dragging helped my line. My brother, not so much but it may help someone else
Same. I started gripping the disc about 12 o'clock and for some reason dragging or like my hand being the tractor pulling the trailer to where it needs to go right in the basket. I could also literally visualise the line, side tilt and nose angle of the disc in my pre throw walk through
Great tips! Love the putting through it. If I find myself putting short I aim for a weld on the backside of the chains 🤙🏼
The man! 🔥
The last honorable mentioned really helped my game!
One that helped me, was to never let your hand or disc go outside the width of your shoulders. I also practice the scoober a little at the end of my practice. It has come in handy in a few situations. Sometimes I've thought that I should just use the scoober all the time, because I have such good luck with it, when practicing,, lol.
Put a rope line on the ground between you and the basket focus on keeping your disc over the rope. I saw this in a YT video...forgot the guys name....but it's amazing!
I find using the “pour the coffee” method of tilting the wrist down throughout the full length of the putting stroke helps me to get a nice clean, flat release
Played a round after watching this yesterday and WOW. The 2 second rule is an absolute game changer!! THANK YOU!!!
Watching the Innova founder's video helped my longer putts: "you're pulling the disc, even if you're push-putting, you're pulling the disc." Putting with my hand in front of/on the far edge of the disc and feeling like I'm pulling the disc towards the target helped with putting through the basket!
The best putting tips on youtube.
You, Ben and Robbie C are my favorite disc golf channels right now. Keep up the great work!
For me the biggest thing is mentality. When I walk up to a putt, instead of thinking "I Need to make this" or "what if I miss this easy putt?" I just think, "I Can make this", and I think of all the putts that I've made in my life and just visualize it going in. It doesn't always work, but I'm missing by inches instead of feet. Honestly, outside of twenty feet I'm not beating myself up about missed putts, as long as I get metal and don't get a bad roll. It's mostly mental, keep that positive attitude.
Yeah baby! Team Pondy! The Ponderosa has changed my putting game!
Everyone seems to love hyzer putting. I like to putt flat in the circle, and a little anny outside of the circle. The handshake also comes with a flick of the wrist
I putt flat when I am close and hyzer flip when I am far away, like 15 to 30 meters. That's only because my main putting putter is an extremely old aviar and it is quite understable.
I putt that way too. Tried everything else. That is the most consistent for height as well as line for me.
I'm definitely going to work on putting the pizza in the oven tomorrow. Hands down one of the best tips I've ever seen.
Be proficient in staggered and straddle putting. Straddle putting is more effective one hilly courses. Especially for balance or when the basket is above or below you. Probably the biggest tip that helped me was putting with a slight hyzer angle on the disc when it's uber windy out. It definitely makes a big difference with a headwind.
Enjoyed the video, but now I want some pizza lol!
Take care ✌
Great video as always! The two that resonated with me that I need to try is the two seconds rule, I love consistent and repeatable things and I think that will help with my putting stroke, and the putting through the basket. A solid 75+% of my inside the circle putts are on-line but short. I think what I'm going to try is focusing on a chain link that is on the far side of the basket and see if that helps me correct the distance in my head.
I am going to try these out.
Stoked to hear how it goes!
Off topic tip....if you squirt some silicone down the inside of the pole within the chains it will significantly quite the rattle down. Hope that makes sense!! Thank you for all you do for the DG community 👊🏻🥏🍻
3:01 "Put the pizza in the oven!" Love it! 😂😂😂
Such amazing tips and really appreciate the personal descriptions and how they affected your putting mindset behind them! Thanks for the great content and keep up the great work
Thanks Ryan! Everyone really came through with the killer tips 👏
AGL Ponderosa is a great straight long putter, a bit tall. I never could remember which tip you were currently on. Repeating during process is helpful to audience. All good tips. Thx
The handshake is probably the most important "technique" I heard here. I've found that follow through is everything. The disc will always go right where you throw it. Finish the throw pointing at the basket, and that's where the disc is going to go. Sounds obvious, I know, but most of my misses from makeable range are because I failed to follow through properly.
I’m going to try that Pizza one out ASAP.
Hey Jesse. I live in South Park so not far from you. Love what you are doing with the sport. This is the best putting video on youtube, maybe best period. Well done.
Hey, btw one of my card-mates picked up one of your prototypes at ACC, when you were looking for it. Good luck with all that bro.
Thanks Leon! I appreciate the support and the help with that proto 🤘
Thanks for the video as always. I always find that if I practice putt for 10-15 min before a game, I play much better. Drives and all.
👏🏼
Spot on with my suggestion! Follow through with the hand.
Dude your killing it. Keep it up bud. B
The last three were crazy good
Scott Stokely has a great tip. Your entire putting stroke should be on a straight line to the target point. That way if you release a little early or a little late your disc will still fly on line to the basket. You'll find yourself missing high or low, but almost never left or right assuming you've adjusted for wind and fade.
Just snagged one of the putters! Stoked to have it come in🤙🏻
Thanks for the support AJ!
When I straddle putt I use my off arm instead of my back leg to counter the throwing motion. Basically I end up looking like a T. It helps me rotate my shoulders behind the putt. I do have to make sure my non-throwing shoulder is not cheating though so I always push it a little forward right before I aim. Then I aim (2-3 seconds is about right) and switch my shoulders while shaking hands with the top right chain on the basket.
Good stuff
I was told 15+ years back to always have my hand opened like a handshake when releasing my putts. to this day I swear by this practice, My putting is by far the most consistent part of my game. as you release your disc, your hand should be opened like a handshake right at the basket.
Be mindful of the breath. The best "accuracy" athletes in the world have a strong connection to the breath. Disc Golf is all about accuracy. Something to keep in mind, breath is the regulator for emotion and heart rate. Developing a strong connection to it will change your game and quite literally your life. For more info I like a book called "The Warrior's Breath".
Also, nice choice in putters. I prefer a Madrone myself but I won't hold it against you.
Gotta give that 2 second one a try! Good stuff!
Love that Fly Green basket! Mine works like a charm, if I can get it in the basket once in a while
It's actually just the MVP Black Hole Lite, but anything from Denver is probably even better 😏 much love to the FG homies!
I absolutely love all your videos!!! I have learned so much already and continue to do so!
Thanks Cody!
Thing that helped me was focusing on the power of the legs and the push off the ground doing more and more to your furthest out point when putting. This was when in the whole of redoing my putt from something that did not work to Stagger in 2014 to what I have used since 2017 and found this last bit in of info in 2017 when using the back leg to push off the ground in 2016 I found the tip of more and more back leg kick to help. I got the Idea from Ricky Wysocki though I use more of a spinning push putt then a straight push putt. The other was using the pole edge on the right or left depending on throwing arm to use for focus on when aiming.
I recently switched to staggered as well. I’m going to have to try that last one out!
Hope it helps! (Also, let us know if you have any other tips that helped with the switch!!)
Once you get outside C-1 start rocking back then forward on a horizontal plane for some more distance. I've had some good outcomes with same speed inside C-1 then adding a rocking motion for up to around 45ft.
Yo! I just figured out the 2 second technique myself. Not exactly the two second part, but my tech is to 100% stare at the ground like an extremely shy person, maybe glancing up really quickly at the basket, but the focus is to make sure my grip is really solid. I shake it around to make sure it isn't moving anywhere on accident. Then I look up at the basket and throw it. Not "right away" but basically right away. So maybe I'm at more like a second and a half.
The reason I started thinking to do that is because I remembered about the different forms of memory. Essentially there is the nearly "instant" memory that is very quickly forgotten, which is the idea behind a word flashing on a screen for subliminal messaging. That is technically still memory.
I have ADHD, so my working memory (the ability to juggle info like RAM for a computer) is crap. On one hand, I can remember things really well if my brain decides that it is interesting enough, but if it doesn't decide, then I have a much harder time performing tasks that are reliant on working memory. Another issue with ADHD is that I have a harder time with my prefrontal cortex telling the rest of my brain what to do. So I can daydream like crazy, but that doesn't mean that I go out and do the task. (Meds are seriously such a difference maker in this area. I got diagnosed as an adult and I've done so much more with myself since then)
So staring at a basket and sinking the putt might be important, but it isn't at all interesting. So I essentially make it a challenge for my brain by giving it a shorter time to look at it and I think it also helps because a shorter timeframe means that I have less time to consciously think about it and try to control what I do.
Not everyone has ADHD, but we all have a similar brain. So I run into this problem enough to be more aware of it, but we all have limits to our attention, our interest, working memory, etc. So my theory is that this technique really helps to let your putting be more "instinctual"
For me shaking hands with the basket doesnt work at all since I tend to focus too much on kind of releasing the disc and then i almost everytime yank it to the right or my power is too loose and leave it too short and to the left.
That leg kicking same time as release cut me atleast couple strokes on putting green today and it also somehow made me to release bit lower since my miss is usually on the top band.
Tip that has helped me is that you draw an imagenary line from yourself to the basket (or that one chain link) and i pull my disc back to that line and push it straight in that line. That helped me to cut misses to only top and low, not so much on left/right anymore.
Great video and tips!
This is a great reminder that different things work for different people 👏🏼 Stoked the last helped and thanks for adding another great tip!
The putting through the chains and picking a link or weld helps when hitting the front of the basket. I think when you hit the front of the basket more than you would like to admit is because we subconsciously are trying to throw where the disc lands in the basket
Snipers use that "aim small, miss small" technique! I go staggered stance for distance putting, then get into crab mode on the close shots. That handshake method works fo sho. I release my disc just before stopping my hand to the right side of the pole.. usually works lol.
Great tips! "Crab mode" 😂
Have not heard people talk about this, but this is a theory of mine that seems to work for me. For spin putt, if you miss right or have trouble reaching the basket on longer putts, don't move the arm too fast and make sure you snap out the disc with your wrist before the arm stops moving. If the arm gets fully extended, a late snap might pull to the right and won't give nearly as much power to the disc. (Then there's obviously force you can get from your legs too)
I use the handshake method but found that my wrist motion would throw it off if I over or under-torqued. Concentrating on a consistent wrist flick helped immensely.
Best putting tip I ever got, no lie -
Just put the disk in the basket.
A tip I got from an old guy at my course was "paint the pole".
this is the first time in all my disc golfing years that i have heard another person phrase it like "shake hands with the basket", been saying it for years.
What has helped me is making sure the weight transfer is there. I've noticed a delay of maybe 1/2 second between the sound of my rear foot kicking and the sound of the putter leaving my hand
Legit, I do all of these. Except for the 🍕 😂 but I also do a more exaggerated version of what you're doing by locking my left, (non throwing hand) to my hip. That keeps me balanced and dialed in better than the back leg kick out. As that's not really needed until 50 feet out.
what has helped me the most are three things.
1. Not trying to practice long putts but shorter 5 to 7 meters. That gives me a solid foundation for putting and my longer puts have been going in more aswell.
2. having your back leg and hand move at the same time thing. Just like with a drive, if you are unbalanced during the throw you will fail to do it correctly.
3. All the motion from pull back to the release should be inline with the basket. Any deviation from that will make you more likely to pull the disc to either side of the basket.
Something that helped me in circle one was to hold the putter normal except on the bottom of the putter just use finger tips and barely flick the fingers on release. It zooms straight.
Can’t trust someone who confirms they are being g completely honest that many times hahahaha. Good video man good tips
I found that not firing off a stack of putters from the same spot but rather moving to a different distance and wind direction for each individual practice putt translated to better putting in unpredictable conditions on the course. It’s a training of the senses to compensate for different footing, wind, and force/angle/spin put on the disc.
Yes! Great tip 👏🏼
I think that really engaging your back and butt helps to keep balance, and keep those putts high!
My brother's told me from day one to shake hands with the basket when putting great tip
My biggest weak point in putting is an inconsistent wrist open, so a trick I use for proper and full follow through on a staggered putt, with consistency, is finishing on my front toe.
I watched Ben's putting video back when it first came out and his tips/form really do help. I've never really been confident in my putting until I saw his video and practiced. Though I've started to study and putt like Paige Pierce now and I find it to be much more accurate when I start my stoke up high above my head compared to chest height. No idea why.
He crushes it! 🔥
As scott stokely preaches "keep your follow through until the disc is in the basket or on the ground."
This is the tip that changed my putting forever. I was forever recommend this to anyone while they practice.
For me, the handshake is about controlling the disc angle. In circle 2 range, it helps releasing at a flat to anny angle. I started draining 30ft putt with this one tip.
Neighbors: That guy's banging in the yard again!
Ezra finishes left with his putt and I’ve been doing it all year and it helped me with my problems of kissing right
I cut a pool floatie down the middle and taped it to the middle pole for a silent basket. Minimal bounce outs.
I always use the finger on the lip of the disc as a way to 'point' at the basket and helps me aim better. Probably similar to the hand shake.
Switching from having my index finger inside the rim to resting it on the outside like Paul does helped me clean up my release a whole lot.
I just heard the 2 second tip for the first time a couple days ago! I think maybe from a Scott Stokely video? I liked that pretty well. Seems like a good way to establish routine.
Nikko Locastro always follows the 2-second rule, doesn't he? ;-)
This isn’t an underrated tip, but the mental part of putting is huge. Most of the putts I miss are because I’m nervous about missing it. Telling yourself you can make it and you are in fact going to make it helps tremendously. It can be really hard to do though.
Agree- I caught myself thinking “this one could save par” instead of “here is my par”
Not underrated yet totally underrated at the same time... Thanks for mentioning that! So good!
Seems a good tip may be to try all of these just like you did. I can't imagine that you fully erased each tip prior to trying out the next one. In essence you are practicing each time and likely incorporating a bit of each previous tip while trying out the next. I will try this myself, but maybe I will switch from Staggered to Straddle (my primary course has lots of un-level greens)
Good stuff!!! -- fusing all those tips into one motion was excellent. So, I put exactly the same - except I don't use the same power at 15' or 20' that I do at circle's edge. However, like most people I suppose, I will shank one or two out of ten (sometimes) and I know when I threw it that it was because my focus was lost or gone or shifted. I use a stack of 10 discs and I am assuming that putting that many could cause a person to lose focus. TIP Question: How to maintain focus throughout each shot. Question 2: I typically have several discs in my non-throwing hand during practice and it occurred to me that if I am training that way - should I putt that way on the course? I feel like there may be some counter-weight thing going on?
My suggestion would be to give yourself different looks; Putt from a knee or with an elevated basket.
Look at this new locale!!!
I've also been told to think of tossing a pizza horiztally instead of vertically
Remember your breathing affects the disc too. So breathe out, before you Putt.
Best tip I ever heard. It’s a pull putt, not a push putt. Its a pulling motion to the basket…don’t push it there, pull it.
Dude i am not good at putting at all. But i tried out the only look where you are aiming for 2 seconds today during my round and i either made or hit the cage on every putt 40 feet and in. Which is a wild improvement over my normal putting. I will see if it was a lucky mental thing today or not but i havent felt that good after a round since i started playing.
I am glad that last one works for you. For most that would be horrible advice, especially if your miss is the too short.
All of these clicked in some way, but I do have a really good tip for you. While preheating your oven, place a tray in the oven. Once heated, place your frozen pizza on a cooking paper, take the tray out and pull the pizza to the tray with the paper. Let it sit in the oven like normally and once ready take the tray out and leave it on the countertop for a couple minutes before cutting it. You get the best crust you've tasted on a frozen pizza.
😂
Just ordered an AGL & Trash Panda collaboration Ponderosa 🌲🌲🥏
Thanks for the support!!
Here's mine!
Pick a chain, now play catch with that chain.
I lost it at echolocation hahaha
By the way... if you want to silence your chains a bit on that MVP basket, weave a rope in between the chains in the front and fill the middle pole with some spray foam. Sound deadened by about 60%.
Sooo good!
if you're putting from 27 ft plus out is a good chance you're actually sending the disc in a direction that initially starts out over the basket and that point can be a better AimPoint than a specific chain link and as you get further out it's important to know how high over the basket you need to aim. obviously if you have a super powerful putt and you can always hit the chain link without your disc dropping it's another story. I'm 62 years old and was 7th in the world this year so I don't put his heart as those youngsters.
