I was trained as a singer. Yes, Ms. Devia's singing is beautiful. As for the virtuosic attacca, it is a hallmark of a beautiful singing voice. Not everyone has it, by nature so it seems. Ms. Devia has it. It is the ability to open up (hit on the note) without a restriction from the throat. I found it difficult, even though I had scholarships, etc. Sometimes it involves the back of the throat. I love hearing someone sing that can get to the note right away.

The listener who can't hear that virtuosic detail (one needs these to train ones ear, today, to hear what in past generations would have been so much easier to hear) will never understand what makes great singing. He who hears that detail understands why European lyric music is so linked originally to the Italian language, and appreciates how that in turn helps explain why it is so much better to hear Italian singers in Italy, where the Italian orchestras and the best choruses also have at least a subconscious appreciation of the same 'attacca', since its origin is found in how the Italians speak their language! La Devia is perhaps the last great testimony to the finest singing traditional of all. Before its too late, the present young generation of singers, especially soprani, should study her art, before all other post-war soprani (though Lucia Popp was also another great exponent of this ultimate art). I believe Devia is actually 71, since when I heard Devia last, her incredible Elisabetta in Florence two years ago, it was widely revealed then that she was 69. That she sings with such extraordinary completeness at the age of 71 is not the truly remarkable point: rather, it is that she sings with such extraordinary completeness! There is simply no singer living, that I know, to match her and I have heard more than 2,000 live opera performances in every single major opera house in Western Europe and the States, over the past 40 years.

@@Neldidellavittoria Dal vivo, il non rispetto del pp alla fine lo posso pure capire - la stessa Caballé, che dei pianissimo era maestra indiscussa, davanti al pubblico non se la sentiva sempre di rischiare: basta una goccia di saliva di traverso e resti senza voce di fronte a tutti. Purtroppo, alla fine di quest'aria è prevalsa la pessima abitudine di fare il crescendo sul "Pietà" (così come alla fine del "Nessun dorma" non c'è più un solo tenore che rispetti la schiacciata sulle ultime due sillabe del "Vincerò" finale, ma tutti tengono la nota lunga sul "Vinceeeeeeee" per mostrare quanto sono bravi...). A meno che, in questo caso, tu non ti riferisca al metronomo lentissimo di quest'aria - ma quello rientra nella responsabilità del direttore, non del cantante.
