  • Hey everyone! I hope you enjoy this review as much as I did making it. Can the Lakland 55-02 hold onto its crown as 5 string king? Let's find out!
    Big thanks to Dom @ Third Floor Guitars for setting this bass up. You can find him at www.thirdfloorguitars.com

    Everyone who reviews this Bass. Always forgets to mention the 9 position midrange selector dip switch accessed on the inside of the Preamp cover on the Back of the Bass. Which gives even more tone versatility. This is what makes this LH 3 preamp a Beast. And to add to that. Johhny Lee Long does a Mod with Agrullar Pups that helps this Bass nail both the P-Bass, Jazz Bass and Stingray tones and much more.

      Thanks Calvin! Indeed, I definitely need to revisit the 55-02 now that I'm equipped with more knowledge on the instrument (this vid was early on in the channel). Definitely want to mod it as well this time!

  • @dupajas4671
    @dupajas4671 4 роки тому +8

    Though I have never even played the 55-02, or any Lakland for that matter, I would assume that with the preamp, you can probably get it to sound closer to the Stingray if you bump up Mids and Treble. Maybe bump Mids and cut Treble to mimic the P...
    Just some thoughts...

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for the comment, Dwarde! I was really just exploring the tone of the pickup as it relates to the stingray, not necessarily trying to dial the exact stingray tone in with the preamp. My goal was for you to hear the differences instead of the similarities, if that makes sense. It's actually quite incredible that so many basses with the same pickup configuration can sound so different from one another. I just got in an Ibanez ATK 810 which has a similar-ish pickup layout, yet sounds completely different from the Lakland, Bunny, Ray, and my other basses.

    Do you find thar you could 'add back' the missing top end with the Lakland's EQ control, when compared to the Stingray, or do you feel the pickups' frequency response don't go there, if that makes sense?
    I'm considering either one of these or an actual Stingray HH.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 роки тому

      Honestly, I think it's the frequency response of the pickups. You have some dip switches in the cavity that give you a little more flexibility, but you won't be able to capture the stingray tone with the stock pickups.

    The neck is unlike most basses. The tight B string is tight bc the space between the nut is longer than most 5s. The pups are versatile, and gets killer P and J tones. I've A/B ed them just like you did here. The tones don't nail it exactly but I didn't want just a clone. It gets it the ballpark. These pups are all humbuckers, so youre not gonna get the exact P/J/ MM sounds out of it. No noise either.The pre can be tweaked w DIP switches. When I take Mike out I get tones of compliments on the tone. And I can zip around on that neck as well. This is the best engineered mass produced piece you can get for the price.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 роки тому +1

      Excellent question! I'd equate the 55-02 more to the 1005 as the Lakland pickups and preamp in here are modeled after barts. I'd say the Ibanez is the superior instrument with the nords, but it really depends on the type of music you play. Also, I've heard about some QC issues with the EHB lately in terms of intonation/neck fitment. Playability is also very different, 35" all around with 19mm spacing vs 18mm spacing and multiscale. If you have the opportunity, play em both and see which one feels better in your hands!

    Great review, but why compare the Lakland to the Sting Ray or the P bass?! The Sting Ray and the P bass have their own distinctive sound so why can't the Lakland have its own sound ? I actually prefer the Lakland over both of the other 2 . It has its own voice and versatility. Big and buttery, smooth and linear, or clear as a bell without one scintilla of harshness! It's an Armani suit, or a Jaguar Coupe, and can thunder with the best of them !! And they look straight up fly!! 💪👊🎵🎶🔉

    Ok, I have had the 55-01 and the 55-02 and hear is the truth. The 5501 is more versatile than the 5502. The 5502 preamp and pickups suck. They are well constructed and have great features. The 5501, I could never get the open E to sound right and the 5502 is only good for Motown. My advice fot the 5501 is get the deep tone Bart for the neck and for the 5502 get get EMG pups and an Audere preamp and those changes will make them both keepers.
