    Hello Julian I do not have the pleasure to know you in person but oh I have to tell you that I am watching this video with tears in my face (happiness) you have changed my life. You gave me hope. My tinnitus was really bad two weeks ago and today it was almost silent just because I understand that it is caused by anxiety and depression. I still have a long way to go but believe me that you were sent by god (universe) to help and save people lives. Hope you read this ! Thank you

      @@ronaldbumanglag5608 hi Ronald it's been three years since I had that issue and it is completely gone :) my tinnitus only lasted two months. It was triggered by my nervous system and anxiety. Once I understood it was my brain focusing on the sound it started to fade away. Basically The more afraid I was of it the louder it got. The more I calmed my body and brain it slowly went away. You will heal and it will go away on its own you will see.

    Julian is the most soothing person on earth to listen to if you’re dealing with tinnitus. I often find my perception literally drops, sometimes significantly, by watching his videos. I believe he’s absolutely right. A year in and recently watching a lot more, I’m finding a real correlation between T level and my own inner peace and lack of fear, worry and depression. I have experienced “silence in a quiet room” since watching Julian, for a few mins or a few hours now and again, it is beautiful! I know that these silent periods are going to get longer and longer. Stress, fear and anxiety are key drivers of this T symptom whatever the cause is. I believe Julian and I think the NHS ought to hire him to train GPs to deal with tinnitus patients

      @@esmie350z8 Sorry to have to give you such extreme advice Esmie, but you are in that "fight or flight" mode. After I got divorced, I was able to sort of "cocoon" myself. I don't mean that I shut myself away completely from everyone, but my small apartment in a quiet street became my refuge. I didn't realize how badly I needed this and I looked back at what I was putting up with and swore "never again" will I go through that abuse! Because that's exactly what it is Esmie. Living alone (but not lonely) I was able to come to terms with the condition and it lessened.
      You may probably have to take the measures I took and find some way to live alone, in your own cosy place, where you can be kind to yourself and recover, which you will. Melatonin to sleep helped greatly.
      I wish you all the best in the world and a tranquil and happy life Esmie. Stay strong !!

    Thanks for this. I've had very loud, polyphonic tinnitus for about 8 months. Dial tones, buzzing, hissing, crickets, the whole nine. It has wreaked havoc on my attention and working memory. I am easily distracted and go off on tangents. Multi-tasking is completely out. I have to make lists for everything, but then I forget to make the lists, or to bring them. I've even had to stop working (luckily, I'm mostly retired). Anyway, what you say in this video makes tremendous sense. I had been thinking along these lines, that "fear" is what gives tinnitus its power. It gets louder if I try to mask it; tones switch when I try to pin them down. It was strange how it came on. Last fall I was in a period of stress. Late at night I would often sit outside and listen to the crickets. I admired their rich and complex sound. After the first big rain the crickets were gone. I noticed, no more crickets, A few days later I thought they were back, sounding somewhat different. It turned out to be tinnitus!!! Perhaps when the cricket songs begin in a couple of months this tinnitus will go away. In the mean time, I will watch your videos, cool down the pressure and look for some Californian cranial-sacral therapy. Thanks again.

    Thanks for this Julian. Do you think that using hearing aids for a mild hearing loss might actually fuel the fight/flight reaction? I did think they might provide the absent sounds tinnitus could have been triggered by, but now having listened to this video I'm wondering if their use has had a negative effect. In truth I feel I could manage without them. Your videos have been a real source of information, support and calm over a difficult few months when a 10 year tinnitus spiked alarmingly. Starting yoga via UA-cam courses and being mindful of stressful situations has helped enormously. Following your "does it have to be cranial sacral therapy for tinnitus" video I put gentle cycling into the mix as my calming activity. As you said, "find what works for you". Anyone struggling at the moment really should listen to, and act upon what you say.

    My experience is that what you focus on expand so the more one focuses on tinnitus the worse it will be. When I’m distracted and let go of the focus it really seems to disappear . When I fixated on it it is much worse . The trick of course is letting go because one can’t force oneself . Usually it happens without thinking so it seems our pesky minds provide the problem and the cure ...

    I really like the point that tinnitus can be seen as an "understandable" thing - regarding what actually stresses you out emotionally. Understandable in a way that it's more about emotional comprehension rather than an explanatory approach. That kind of perspective gives you some desensitisation back. Seeing it as an absolutely normal reaction to things that just stress you out because they just do. It's always good to realise that I'm not broken for being in this condition but just having a reaction to things that do me no good, which is totally understandable and normal and relatable.

      marc van Epen, yes! Good posture is critical to getting help from tinnitus. It is the cause or at least the trigger that worsens tinnitus, for many people; tension in the neck, hunched up shoulders, neck pain, jaw pain, all that. That's why Julian is always telling people to get into these body-centered practices, to raise awareness of where they are holding tension in their bodies, so they can learn to release it.

    Another wonderful video! Thank you again, dear wonderful Julian. You explain everything so clearly, so well, and you exude such genuine caring for everyone who watches your videos. Everything you say here makes perfect sense for me. I have not completely 'let go' my tinnitus, yet it rarely really bothers me much, and I have been unable to as yet let it go because I am still mired in daily stress.
    My life is still somewhat chaotic, and I have been experiencing great emotional stress, tiredness, sadness, and above all frustration with a couple aspects of my life, and all that is FUEL for tinnitus. I am frankly surprised I am doing as well as I am, actually! :)
    I would be doing so much better if I were now in a position to get regular cranio sacral work, other massage, take a yoga or Tai Chi class, and if I was able to live where I wanted, and was free of money worries. Until those things change, I am limited in my total freedom from tinnitus, but as I say, it rarely bothers me anyway, and that is because I have no doubt that it IS something I can heal, and that WILL settle completely, given time. Thank you for these wonderfully encouraging videos!

      Twan I'd be interested in Julian's thoughts on this too, but I'm guessing he doesn't have a lot to say on it because he's not a dietician / expert in that field.
      However, look at the work of Dr Darren Schmidt and lactic acidosis - basically high carbohydrate diet and how it causes lactic acid build up in the blood.
      I also would not be surprised if some plants were implicated in this, as they are waging chemical warfare against us as their only defence mechanism in order not to be eaten.
      As usual the answer would be consuming the usual nutrient dense big hitters; organs, eggs, oily fish.
      And keeping carbohydrates to a complete minimum.

      Keep simple sugars out of the diet completely. Inflammation is a strong catalyst for tinnitus, and sugar creates horrid inflammation in the body. Eat raw vegetables, quality proteins, low glycemic carbs, quality high fat foods. Eggs, nuts, oily fish, avocados, coconut meat and oil. 3l of water a day. Only eat in an 8 hour window, i would say only 2 meals a day. Then fast for the rest of it. This is incredibly healthy for the body.

    I had one of those anxiety type dreams where I was trying to do something over and over and over again to no avail, woke up and been having slight symptoms of tinnitus in one ear for the past few days (a very low hum and a slight very faint chirping)...I clinch my teeth alot on that side and I think I was agressively doing it in my sleep that night. No hearing loss at all, went to the ER twice and they said my ear drums looks very normal as well as my throat. Have you ever heard of it happening that way? And is this easier to cure?

    What I don’t feel like I have control over are the spikes. Any time I do something “physical” my tinnitus gets louder for hours. How can I have control over this? It feels subconscious. It feels like it happens without my having “any say.” It’s automatic. How do I do whatever it is for this part to go away also? Or stay really low?

    Julian, can you explain why short naps tend to activate the Tinnitus and make it so loud? Feels like that part of the brain just flares up when I take naps.
    My T also changes from ringing/ to hissing/ to a combination and rarely just one ear ringing. I've also been able to stop a spike while just trying to relax and asking God to help me and telling myself that everything is ok. I hope I can find a way to just end this ordeal.

      It is common to listen out for tinnitus even when you have a good day. It is really important to notice when you are doing this and then to have a stretch, do a quick 5 min yoga session or take 5 breaths. When you notice the T then take positive action. We can quickly train ourselves to shift the focus elsewhere. Practice makes this possible.

      I would let it be there, with it in your awareness increase your focus to include more of the body - eg breathing, clenching and relaxing and gentle moving. You are looking to increase your awareness to include more and more of your body without fighting the tinnitus. Ideally, you want to just let it be there and leave it alone and become much more focused on the body. A lovely practice is to do walking meditation if this is comfortable for you. Walk for 10-15 minutes very slowly in a circle, bringing your attention to the contact on the floor. When the twitter comes to mind, just back to the feet. Learn to sustain the focus of attention in your feet. This will shift your focus away from the T without fighting it and ground you.

      Yes. For a lot of people, tinnitus goes away all by itself. Just taking the mind off it and getting on with other things for a lot of people is enough for the symptoms to go away.

    Julian, what do you think of vagus nerve stimulaton to reduce fear and in consequence tinnitus?

    • @JulianCowanHill
      @JulianCowanHill  6 років тому +1

      Very helpful indeed. Encouraging the parasympathetic response in the nervous system helps tinnitus back off. In Craniosacral Therapy when we work around the occipital area at the base of the head we help open up the pathways of the vagus nerve. This can be incredibly helpful to free up the tension at the top of the neck/base of the cranium for this very reason. Osteopaths chiropractors physiotherapists and Craniosacral Therapists are some of the many body-based therapists that can really help free this part of the nervous system up.

      The most important thing is to eat a healthy diet and not to have too much salt, sugar or stimulants like coffee, tea, chocolate or alcohol. This doesn't mean you need to give them up. Just in moderation. Salt is the biggest problem for tinnitus by far. A drink with dinner that relaxes you is not going to do any harm at all. It may relax you enough to help you feel better. A whole bottle is too much!

    • @JulianCowanHill
      @JulianCowanHill  6 років тому +4

      Yes. The same is true for hyperacusis. In fact I find hyperacusis backs off quite quickly and is usually first to subside. Please use your hands to massage your face, massage the chewing muscles, the side of the head, give yourself facials - better still have a facial, or a craniosacral therapy session to help ease the stress and tension held in the face, jaw ear area. This can quickly help the hypersensitivity and jangliness subside.

    • @PatrickBMusic-sf2hu
      @PatrickBMusic-sf2hu 6 років тому +3

      You are definitely in fight or flight mode. Believe me I was in your same situation two months ago. It's a terrible feeling, feeling like you will never be able to escape it. And by no means is it easy to just calm down. My doctor prescribed alprazolam for me (xanax) and I would take .25 mg to .5 when I was freaking out. That really helped me to get over the hump. You don't want to take it every day if you can help it because it's very addictive, but when you are having a really bad day, it can really help. Now I have a mostly still full bottle of it because I don't need to anymore. One thing that I did that helped me was to put in earplugs when I wasn't overly stressed out about it, that will make the tinnitus louder but keep yourself busy doing something like working or exercising and that will help to train your brain to know that it is not in immediate Danger. Then if you start getting too worried about it, take them out and put on some nice music or something, you don't want to overdo it. But with time your brain will start to hear it as just a background noise and nothing to get too upset over. I'm far from having my tinnitus gone, but right now at least I'm not letting it ruin my happiness, in fact it sounds crazy but in some ways I'm happy that I got it. I definitely want to keep working on myself and I want it to go away, but it sparked me to make many positive changes in my life and for that I am thankful. I really know that you can get to that state also, it will take time, but it will happen if you let it.
