Tara: you truly make great and expert reactions to singers. I heard you one time comment on duets with same registered singers and made me wonder who can best have a duet with Lea. A 'concert from home' during the early parts of the pandemic showcased a Broadway medley between Lea Salonga and Regine Velasquez. Might you consider reviewing it (ua-cam.com/video/CiQS0hgrURk/v-deo.html)? Thanks for considering.

@Happines With less S nah, Lea didn’t really have mamba mentality. She was faced with the critical judgment of being a woman of color in general. Producers in Broadway wouldn’t accept her just for her being Asian, and the audience, because of the general bias for a white person rather than a person of color, would’ve picked her to death and declared her incapable of singing on the big stage if she made a single mistake. So Lea made sure to never make a single mistake. She made sure there would be purely no reason for them to say these things, no reason to say she’s not good, no reason to say that she’s not fit for the part. And the crazy thing is she wasn’t doing it to compete with others. She was doing it to survive and live her dream as a Broadway singer.

Hello Tara! I'm a highly trained lyric baritone. Because of neck damage and deterioration I have to take nerve meds, which affect my vocal control, so I'm not able to sing anymore, which makes my wife extremely sad (she's a fantastic cellist). But, I understand pure Bel Canto practical application in the real world, and how it applies to any kind of singing (except maybe rap), and frankly, you're one of the best at describing its techniques. Thank you for your expertise, and more, that you share it openly.
It's a rare person who shares their knowledge. I do so recognize others who do. And one thing I've found is those who are truly gifted typically are the most eager to share.
And I concur on the ending. Perfect presentation, consistency, and focus. Wow!

Learning how to hold your breath is common in singling lessons. Honestly, 25 seconds isn't even a crazy amount of time for holding your breath--it's just long if you're also singing, and thus letting air out the entire time.
I got up to like 45 seconds, yet I could only hold out a note for like 15 before it became a mess.

Loved your reaction. I wanted to be the one to take my great-niece to her first concert. I managed to get front row tickets to Lea Salonga. I was a little worried that she would not enjoy all of the concert other than the Disney songs but didn't need to worry. On the way to the car after the concert, she was skipping and dancing and asking how Lea could sing without taking breaths. She was 8 but she noticed. I earned some major best aunt ever points that night. Lea was amazing.

i love that she mixes and not belts on the high note ("known") as opposed to other singers, particularly samantha barks who's played eponine in the movie. it's not anger, it's defeat. eponine knows marius will not love her back but cannot change her feelings for him, thus the 'i love him's. lea is pretty much the only person i've seen that understood that in their portrayal of eponine.

I appreciate your reactions to her technical singing, because for me, who’s more an actor first, Lea is also doing a masterful acting performance of this song. Down to the techniques of acting. And to add on to the “perfect ending” you mention with the singing, if you keep playing the clip (when the audience applauds forever and forever) she STAYS IN CHARACTER. Seeing actors drop their characters is one of the banes of my existence and when I teach or direct, I try to make it clear that they need to remain in character AT ALL TIMES. And Lea, beautifully, does just that at the end of this song.

    • @alicekirkland1708

To put it perfectly, she is a perfect performer. The acting, the diction, the wonderful clarity of her voice, and her eyes... Oh God, her eyes are expressive, the emotions are practically screaming in her eyes that she is the character herself. After all, one of my favorites in singing is where you sing with emotions. To sing with emotions you need to be connected to the song or to be the character itself.

In one of her miss saigon shows in london, she said that while the show was going on and her role was on some kind of a break, she was actually talking to one of her bestfriends in the philippines with some kind of a family problem through the phone while the show was going on and when its time for her to go back on stage, she told her friend something like its my turn then she said she went back to the stage to perform but told her friend that she will be right back at her!
