Even if the trains were using coal electricity, the amount of cars a single train takes off the road at any moment trumps all the environmental savings from sourcing green electricity sources.
100% agree. Nuclear energy is awesome and we should be using it more. Glad the CTA is doing that! While many people see diesel locomotives as an issue, it really isn't. According to the Department of Energy and the EPA, diesel locomotives on American railroads contribute only 2% to total transportation pollution. In terms of total pollution in the US, that is roughly 0.56% of pollution. And with Metra buying more fuel-efficent diesel locomotives as of late, the SD70MACHs, Metra will be reducing the little amount they pollute.
Nuclear energy is green energy. Wind and solar 'are' good to have, but you should be building more storage capacity and signing agreements with utilities here in Canada to purchase cheap grid-balancing services from our hydropower plants.
1 a train taking folks is better than a ton of vehicles on the road. 2 this needs to be on the back burner as the city has become the new Detroit. And nothing truely constructive is being done. Fix your corrupt port city first. Then care about emissions.
Speaking of "going green," I wish the CTA would go back to the 1940s colors of creme and green that originally were used on Chicago Surface Lines, PCC streetcars and then on the 6000 series "L" cars.
Thank you so much for reporting on Energy sources for railroad operations. This knowledge can help drive sustainability options for both the scheduled Redline Extension and the intergovernmental CREATE Project via 74th Street Plan. Reducing the Nuclear Power levels before 2030 is achievable.

Nuclear energy is green and provides lots of capacity. Metra’s polluting diesel locomotives are a bigger concern.

And what about cars?
This is such a non-story and idiotic headline.
Car lobby or that solar farm offered to pay their bills
Is this video funded by a car lobby? Just build more damn trains and shut up.
Very misleading title and intro. Only 22% from fossil fuels, 78% from nuclear and renewables.
Now do cars.
