Tom Hanks accent is actually pretty accurate. Colonel Parker was born in the Netherlands and then moved to the US and tried to pass himself off as a southerner. But he was never really able to drop the Dutch accent so he sounded really weird. He was basically an early Tommy Waseau.

I actually originally thought the real Tom Parker was a Mexican trying to be a southerner cause I thought that would have made more sense. It's beyond strange why he came from the Netherlands to the United States but never got a license to come legally into the country. I actually didn't mind Tom Hanks' accent but I can understand why some thought it wasn't accurate enough.

    • @strangebrew1231

It's still bad for the movie. My problem with it is there's too much of Tom Parker. We never really get into the subject's creative process like we do in other biopics

    • @mikemancini313
      @mikemancini313 Рік тому +4

@@strangebrew1231 I can somewhat agree with that. However, despite mismanaging Elvis' estate, Tom Parker was the most influential person for Elvis. As his manager, he is the reason why he is so well known to this day. Honestly, every creative process had to have gone through Tom Parker. The issue with this movie is it's definitely more of a drama than a 100% accurate telling of Elvis' life. Tom Parker is portrayed inaccurately in film which could kinda connect to why people don't like Tom Hanks' acting.
For instance, neither Tom Parker nor Elvis met on a ferris wheel. (Nor is that where Elvis made a huge life decision like it's portrayed in the movie.) Elvis' father and Tom Parker made several attempts to help Elvis Presley get off his addiction to prescription drugs. I wish we got to see more of this side of the movie.

Interesting aside about Elvis' image, a lot of it was because of Pricilla marketing his image to save the estate for Lisa Marie. Elvis was notoriously bad with money and when he died, he left his father in charge of the estate until Lisa Marie was able to inherit it, but he was also not very savvy and when he died and it went to Pricilla, there was almost nothing less. Pricilla WAS savvy though and essentially copywrought (?) his image, and regulated it so only the younger more virile image was present and not his declining years. And she promoted the hell out of it. So when Lisa Marie was old enough, the estate was worth something again and Elvis' legend lives on.
It's a fascinating story, probably worthy of it's own movie, like a dark comedy.

you don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about.
colonel parker took over 50% of elvis's income. The courts ruled in favor of elvis's estate, and rremoved the colonel completely from his estate.
      As for elvis's money problems?
yes, he was very very generous, giving gifts to everyone.
HOWEVER, despite all this, and the fact that Parker stole millions from elvis,
elvis's estate, at the time of his death, was still valued at 13 million dollars, a great deal back in 1977.
Had colonel parker only taken the standard 10-15% of elvis's income, and allowed elvis to tour overseas all across the world, he would've been worth 50 million at his death.
adjusting for inflation? Today , that net worth would be 300 million.

Elvis' father turned over his power of the estate to Priscilla, this was not Elvis' plan. Since Lisa was the only legal inheritant alive, and was a minor, the probate judge ordered an investigation into the finances and business of the estate to make sure the minors Interests were being held to legal standards. After 2 years of auditing and investigation the judge reviewed the reports and was horrified and immediately voided all contracts between Colonel and the estate and ordered the estate to sue Colonel and his co conspirator, RCA records. The judge bullet pointed many areas and ways in which Colonel illegally and unethically mismanaged and fleeced Elvis, as Priscilla listened to the judge rail against Colonel and order her to sue Colonel. Her response to the judge after hearing all the ways Colonel ripped off Elvis was to say to the judge "I would rather stay in business with Colonel." Jaw dropping to hear that. No one ever makes an issue of that comment but I think is a huge insight to her and the Colonels relationship. Colonel was the main force to make Elvis marry her to start with,;when he did not want to, even though he had love for her, he did not want to marry her. I think her making that comment at that time is a big insight that no one looks into further. I wish I could investigate much more into Priscilla and Colonels dealings and timelines of events as Colonel manipulated and molded a few of Elvis' entourage into spying on Elvis for Colonel. Makes one wonder.

The problem with music biopics like these is that they dive into the legend of the singers rather than staying true to what their lives and careers were actually like. In Bohemian Rhapsody (2019), for example, the Queen timeline is condensed, Freddie Mercury is gay rather than bisexual, and none of the risqué stuff Queen did was never showed or mentioned.

I thought Austin Butler was rather close to Elvis at first, but I doubt I’m going to convince you of that. I will say this; looks are not the only vital part of portraying a person on screen. Yes, sometimes looks can be disorienting or immersion breaking if the actor looks nothing like the person they’re portraying. However, Austin Butler nearly captured the entire essence of Elvis Presley; his moves, his style, his mannerisms, and most importantly, his voice. There is more to Elvis than simply his looks, and to act as if looks are the only vital part to Austin Butler’s portrayal of Elvis Presley is to not understand what made Elvis so great. It was not just because of his looks, but his voice, his style, and his moves, which I believe Austin captures very well.

I'm so sick of modern pacing in movies. They're made for people with worse ADD than me. Michael Bay ruined movies until the end of time. Now, you can't catch your breath because things are constantly moving. There are no "moments" in movies anymore. Even in a scene that is trying to take its time, the camera never sits still and takes in what's happening. I know that's an unpopular opinion, but that's why my ultimate action movie is The Living Daylights. It's not quite 80s movie pacing, but there's enough action to keep me invested without becoming Rambo. That would come 2 years later. Sure, some movies like the Fast and The Furious benefit from insane cuts and editing tricks, but a biopic shouldn't be fast paced. I'm not 13 years old anymore. Not every movie has to be the next Bad Boys or a silly CGI "live action" cartoon. I could watch From Russia With Love for days. Jump cuts are not my thing. Sure, I don't want a movie to waste my time with a lot of pointless exposition and scenes that go absolutely nowhere, but I also don't need to constantly be thinking about the next scene. I just want to be present in that moment in the movie and enjoy it. Everyone's in such a hurry.

@@christhornycroft3686 I'm sorry, but Rocketman is a very intelligent musical biopic, don't just compare it to some random marvel film.
Rocketman packs a lot into a two your runtime rather than a stretched out 2 hour 40 minute runtime.
Rocketman is a beautifully constructed film that deals with Elton John's life and career, it follows him through part of his childhood all up until he leaves rehab, we see his life through his time in rehab as if he's telling the story himself.
Some of the best films have runtime under 2 hours including Trainspotting which is only an hour and a half and Seven which is around the same length as Rocketman, completely different films but with shorter runtimes.

I can’t stress enough how phenomenal I think this film is and that people should go see it if they can! The cast and crew knocked it out of the park with their performances as their characters, the incorporation of stylized visuals and cinematography to mix the fantasy and reality of Elvis’s career, the mix of original tracks and Elvis’s greatest hits to emphasize pivotal moments in these people’s lives, and the story is just incredibly captivating, heartbreaking, and awe-inspiring. I like the songs and scenes too, the montage where Elvis was now a movie actor, married Priscilla, had baby Lisa Marie, I kept rewinding the part where the movies were becoming cheap and awful as well where the reporter was saying; '"Beatlemania sweeps America!"' and it showed The Beatles stepping out of their plane and waving to their fans and a couple of fans were holding up signs saying: 'Elvis is Dead. Long live The Beatles!' 'We love you, please stay forever!'. The story from the 68er comeback special is very importend for the career of Elvis. So many new fans are loving this scene especially the song „If I can Dream“.
The 68er comeback special is notbonly importend for Elvis‘ career, it is the first unplugged concert ever.
The producer Steve Binder is making a movie now about this special and the story behind. I hope we can see this next year.
For me there are not enough original Elvis songs in that movie. I don‘t know, why Baz Luhrmann not let him sing his own songs…. Except for the songs from Sun Record Studios, they had to be re-recorded because they were originally only available in mono. Austin Butler sang it himself. Incredible performance!

The story itself while dramatized a bit was really good overall. I'm sure the whole picture of Elvis wasn't painted in the film, but it genuinely made me feel bad for what happened to him due to fame and the way he could never get himself to leave his manager. The running length for me flew by, so no probs there.
Butler deserves an Oscar, he really nailed Presley and the attention to detail with sets, costumes, accent, and performance is the best I've seen. Like Presley, he jumps off the screen.
I would have liked to see more of Presley's sense of humor which the fandom is well aware of and is well documented. Elvis had a lot of fun until the wheels came off his private life and the Col trapped him in shitty contracts and Vegas, then he numbed himself with the pills. But that was really a problem for the last 3-4yrs of his life.
