American Weekend is easily one of the greatest albums of all time, if not the greatest album of all time. You never hear albums THIS moving. They come around a couple times in a lifetime if you're lucky.
i was in the hospital on christmas day suffering from kidney stones. when i got home i was still in agony and i was searching for music to listen to that might make me feel better and i stumbled upon "American Weekend" and i listened to it over a dozen times in the course of the night, drifting off to sleep listening to these incredible songs, it's one of my favourite albums now.

It's pretty much the same as using distortion on a guitar or maybe even like using auto tune. Just a way to add something to the song, musically, I guess. There's also a chance that she recorded this at home or on a tiny budget and couldn't afford to clean it up a whole lot, which could lead to this sound.
Her voice was intentional.

I like these songs and lyrics but I can't stand the crummy amp filtering effect used throughout the album. We got enough of it in the 90's with indie and punk thanks.

You should listen to Cerulean Salt! That's her second solo album and it doesn't have that sound effect at all throughout the whole cd, it was a good decision I think to take it away for the second one.
This is so weird everyone complaining about the sound quality. I dont really enjoy her music nearly as much past the first full length because it became too polished and not as warm and personal feeling. I love the sound of these recordings.
