All The Stations I was looking at your map, there are a few funny little lines in the south that you haven't covered. I am assuming that that will prove rather awkward.
I've watched this series so many times since it first came out, and this is one of my favorite videos - all because of the wonderful lady that gave you a lift and tour. She has a great personality. Please, please if you are ever back in Wales try to look her up and put her in more videos!!! -And nice lady, if you are reading this, if you ever come to Texas we would love to give you a tour - and I promise WE will learn your name!
I couldn't think of a more appropriate train to be named after Tom Jones than a class 143. It's old, a bit passed it, rattles a lot, and makes one hell of a racket.
Geoff and Vicki are correct about Ty Glas and Birchgrove being the shortest distance between stations (340 yards according to Google Earth) The journey times between some of the stations in London may be less than 58 seconds due to electric trains having far quicker acceleration than the class 143s which were on the Coryton line at the time
The crossing in Treherbert is there because the trains go over there to get in to sidings. Before that it was the start of the Rhondda and Swansea Bay railway. The headstone for the Rhondda Tunnel is now at Treherbert Station
Hi Geoff and Vicki. Another great video in the valleys. You are meeting so many nice people appreciating what you are doing. Keep it up with your staminer and enthusiasm.
That gutting moment where you find out that the two stations in Britain that you use regularly are so boring and insignificant that neither of them have made on screen as part of All The Stations... I realise I'm 4 years late to this party, but that's the beauty of UA-cam... Anyhoo, big up to Homerton (he says suddenly worrying that Homerton wouldn't count anyway) and Pengam on the Sirhowy valley line. Hey ho... Great series, though x
There's a SUPERB map on this website here www.willys-mb.co.uk/railways/index.htm which show you just how many railways there used to be back in the Welsh Valleys many years ago.
I am from Radyr (as shown in the video) and have watched this from the start. Nice to see the little place where I'm from getting a few seconds in the limelight!
Another very short journey between stations is between Culrain and Invershin on the Far North Line in the Highlands of Scotland. Both these stations are in different Counties! The timetable says 1 minute journey time! It will be a little while before you reach that part of Scotland.
Oxford road to Deansgate is timetabled as 30 seconds (but not the other way) - only one I can see at a quick glance and only with a class 350. Glasgow central low level to argyle street is timetabled as 1min so worth checking. Although both might be physically further than ty glas and birchgrove
After a bit of research a definitive answer - SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN STATIONS (based on actually railway geogrpahy): Canada Water to Rotherhithe - 200metres Rotherhithe to Wapping - 310m Ty Glas to Birhgrove - 342m Blackfriars to City Thameslink - 402m Argyle St to Glasgow Central - 563m Deansgate to Oxford Road - 564m The shortest in terms of time is as previously mentioned Oxford Rd to Deansgate on a Cl350 - 30 seconds.
Vicki: Looking for a blue plaque here at Abercnyon, birthplace of the Trade Union movement People of Abercnyon: *nods sagely* People of Tolpuddle: Hang on...
The buffers at the top of Treherbert are used every night and morning. The sidings are used as a depot. They store a few units over night as the trip from Cardiff canton TMD takes a while. They keep one for the Merythr line, aberdare line and of course Treherbert. I know this as i live a few stops down, Tonypandy.
I would have thought they were for when a pulled train needs the locomotive to change sides. There might not be one very often, most are of course DMUs, but this set up at least allows it.
Bart Van de Walle Unfortunately, no. When it comes to big events in Cardiff such as sporting events, we might see a 4 unit train rather then 2. But we still see 4 unit trains during peak time regardless.
The trains are fantastic in the valleys but Trehafod station on the upside is the worst platform ever scars the pants off me trying to get out of the train.
If I had a Tardis, I go back to the 1950s and film all the steam locomotives that were around back them... OR maybe visit ALL the stations back them ;)
Aberdare line was Beechinged 1964 + reopened 1988, shortly after the miners' strike. I remember taking the first day of experimental pre-Christmas Saturday service they ran in 1984, actually during the strike, when starting to think of reopening. So now we know: when the Cynon valley still had the mines, its jobs were local + the passenger trains stayed gone, then they returned in the post-mining era that was supposed to be worse ! when there was a new commuter demand for them.
the first steam railway terminus in the world was both Stockton on Tees, and North Road, Darlington. 1825. first railway in the world was around the north east somewhere but wasnt officially used for passengers. part of which is bowes museum not far from where i live.
Wow, those were lovely mountain views. Also, @AllTheStations, The bit of track where that crossing was that leads to the buffer is probably a head shunt. If you, per say, had some carriages you needed to connect the other end of a locomotive to, you could pull into the head shunt, switch the points, and reverse out and get to the other side of the train. Thought you might like to know :).
Used to be the railway from treherbert to Bridgend via cymmer afon and maesteg through the long blaenrhondda tunnel sadly line closed back around 1970 when the tunnel was declared unsafe
Bromley North to Sundridge Park is pretty quick, too! In fact, the home signal for Bromley North is actually on the platform at Sundridge Park! One of my favourite videos though. Pontypridd was the holder of the longest platform in the UK; but as it's sort of divided and disused, it probably doesn't count any more.
The Dutch have managed to create a station distance that is so short, that a 10-carriage train can't fit between the 2 stations. The stations are both controlled by the national Dutch railways, and are located in the town of Veenendaal
that level crossing into buffers at Treherbert is for reversing trains, train comes off the direction it was going, crosses over the points into the siding and can go back the opposite way. But im just guessing.
Hi there it takes about Ty Glas and Birchgrove takes about 5 minutes to walk between each other let alone take a train although as I've never been up Newcastle way you might be right (also a bit off topic but you're the same Jamie from the Manors least used station video, right? Cause I'm assuming that's why I'm subbed to your channel! haha)
@@SGMiner21 ahaha yes yes that’s me! Always had a obsession with that station as you can see yet knew very little about! Thought it was the shortest distance between two stations however it may or may not be! haven’t really checked other than doing the pointless journey between Newcastle and Manors a few times and it just feeling short. And Thank you for subbing to my channel, sorry there is nothing there I really wanted to give something a go but pointless starting when you cannot travel!
Although if you had a TARDIS, you could easily end up with the dinosaurs 🦕, even the Doctor had a bit of difficulty getting the correct date. Or maybe you’d end up solving an unsolved crime.
its actually Lockerbie to Kirknewton (but you cant travel on a direct service between the 2). This avoids Carstairs by taking the curve south of the station. However, as a stopping service then Lockerbie to Carstairs is the longest
I did Hove to Aldrington in 57 seconds today, but 377 electric units have quicker acceleration so probably a greater distance. Other very close stations; Whyteleafe - Whyteleafe South. Anerley - Penge West
I used to deal with complaints on what is now South Eastern. Just lots of moaning letters and irate phone calls - no nice tweets and chatty on-line opportunities!
It's the benefit of Twitter and other social media. Letters or phone calls take somewhat more effort, and only complaints seem to be worth the effort, I guess. Twitter, on the other hand, is instant and easy. Both for small annoyances which otherwise might not have been worth it to write, and small thank yous for good service.
South Wales is beautiful, wow. I've never been there though, except for a brief day visit to Cardiff (in the rain!) for Doctor Who, by train from London. I missed Capaldi unexpectedly showing up by a day. I've only stayed in the north of Wales before. I've got a family friend here in Canada originally from Wales, and she can still speak Welsh.
Pontypridd is pronounced Pontuhpreeth. Welsh is making a resurgence in Wales. It’s a protected language and now compulsory in all schools until the age of 16. The percentage of speakers is increasing well.
Try doing the same time between stations thing for travelling between Shawlands and Pollokshaws East, Glasgow Central Low Level and Argyle Street and between Culrain and Invershin, the distances between those stations are incredibly short too.
in treherbat the crossline is in used train park on siding bay further on there is an old tunnel u have abdare Barry island treherbat trains and Tydfil train over night all park there at siding by treherbat train station im from treorchy area 2 stop down from it
Thomas Frederiksen It is perhaps a little sad that all those dual language signs and announcements are only really understood by such a small percentage of the passengers.
I agree, it's sad. However, nothing is lost indefinitely, as long as there are parents who pass on the language to their children, and it's seen as useful.
Welsh is making a pretty big comeback thankfully. Hopefully most of the population will be fluent again within the next few generations. Side note; as a Welshman I quite enjoy watching people butcher pronounciations.
Just found your channels and really enjoy the videos. Did you stop at Pentrebach one before Merthyr Tydfil? If so what were your thoughts on our little village platform?
You could have done All The Stations so much faster if you had a TARDIS... 💙💙
Doctor Who guys this is the proper Doctor Who.. :O
"The original, you might say!"
oh they said it Ahh
Oh, if only the chameleon circuit still worked....
No way
Sadly, no TARDIS materialised, and we've still not made it to the Isle of Wight

+1 Love the dematerialising in front of a moving background! Well done Will H :-)
All The Stations I was looking at your map, there are a few funny little lines in the south that you haven't covered. I am assuming that that will prove rather awkward.
All The Stations Why are you lying 😂😂😂
All The Stations this might look rude but you pronounce cymru as Cum r i
Avery Lopez-Baines who look exactly the same and use the same UA-cam channel?

The random people they come across and chat to, whether giving them a lift or just rail staff or passengers, are a highlight of these videos.
I couldn't think of a more appropriate train to be named after Tom Jones than a class 143. It's old, a bit passed it, rattles a lot, and makes one hell of a racket.
Hahaha. That made me laugh probably more than it should have. :)
lol :) Tom Jones was born in Pontypridd so the name fitted a valley lines Pacer! Sadly TfW have denamed "him" I think :(
Geoff and Vicki are correct about Ty Glas and Birchgrove being the shortest distance between stations (340 yards according to Google Earth)

At about 1200 feet, Ty Glas to Birchgrove is shorter than the Gloucester platform.
Beautiful, sweeping views of Wales *and* a truck that sells bacon rolls. Sounds like heaven.
Things named after Sir Tom Jones in Wales? It's not unusual...
Tom Shorey I see what you did there!
My my ..... Delilah.
Good one!!
Well done there!!
Plus getting out at Pontypridd, the birthplace of Sir Tom Jones.
Hi Geoff and Vicki. Another great video in the valleys. You are meeting so many nice people appreciating what you are doing. Keep it up with your staminer and enthusiasm.
Craig y Llyn 😍
Goosebumps occurred.
My favourite Valleys place!
the look on Amy's face when she realises she just said "thank you for having us" as if they were the guests not you guys XD
It was funny, but she needn't have worried as it's a reasonable thing to say if you interpret it as "thank you for featuring us in your video"
That gutting moment where you find out that the two stations in Britain that you use regularly are so boring and insignificant that neither of them have made on screen as part of All The Stations...

Just imagine how useful an "all the Stations TARDIS taxi" would be in traveling from the end of one branchline to the next!
Canary wharf to South Quay on the dlr is about 10 seconds, you can physically see the other station
Argyle Street - Glasgow Central is about 30 seconds and Dumbarton East - Dumbarton Central is about 50 seconds
Travelled 26 Dumbarton Central - Dalreoch?
Daniel Nimmo Dumbarton Central to Dalreoch is about a minute
Newcastle to manors is sub 1m
The social media ladies put a nice face on Arriva! Excellent vid, again, and greetings from Chicago.

After a bit of research a definitive answer - SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN STATIONS (based on actually railway geogrpahy):
Canada Water to Rotherhithe - 200metres
Rotherhithe to Wapping - 310m
Ty Glas to Birhgrove - 342m
Blackfriars to City Thameslink - 402m
Argyle St to Glasgow Central - 563m
Deansgate to Oxford Road - 564m
The shortest in terms of time is as previously mentioned Oxford Rd to Deansgate on a Cl350 - 30 seconds.
Tom Porter was going to say about the overground stations 😂😂.
"All the rails in Wales"
A shorter gap between 2 stations is Bootle Oriel Road and Bootle New Strand and takes about 32 seconds between the 2 stops
Walton to Orrell Park the same...
Vicki: Looking for a blue plaque here at Abercnyon, birthplace of the Trade Union movement
People of Abercnyon: *nods sagely*
People of Tolpuddle: Hang on...
There are no railway stations between Lockerbie and Carstairs. You could walk it in a day or two...
Adult anytime day single from Ty Glas to Birchgrove currently costs £2.10, for under a minute of travel!
Have a feeling City Thameslink to London Blackfriars is quicker...
Aerburne And also Devonport Devon to Devonport Dockyard is quicker.
Yeah but that is Thameslink. It should take a few seconds but it actually takes a few years.
Aerburne or even city thameslink to Farringdon or maybe the east London overground line around rotherhithe.
The buffers at the top of Treherbert are used every night and morning. The sidings are used as a depot. They store a few units over night as the trip from Cardiff canton TMD takes a while. Bart Van de Walle No, the Cardiff Valley lines only run DMU's. mostly Pacers, but occasionally 150 sprinters
Not even the occasional charter train? But yes, DMUs are the main staple on most branch lines, and even most main lines, today.
Bart Van de Walle Unfortunately, no. When it comes to big events in Cardiff such as sporting events, we might see a 4 unit train rather then 2. But we still see 4 unit trains during peak time regardless.

me at the end of the video: -Hey, that's a clickbai- Ooooh.
The end bit made the nerdy part of me so happy! Wish Russell T Davies would resurrect Torchwood.

Yayyyy a video with me on it!!
Andrew Gregory, you?

Hope you guys had time for the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff Bay.
They were even on the right step that would take them down to Torchwood...

I pronounce it simru.
@@simontay4851 Interesting. Are you a Welsh speaker and if so from which part of Wales? I've never heard that.
Shouldve done this in 2019. We have Class 37s on the lines now! Also awesome to see you at these lines. I live in fernhill

Excellent video the Welsh part is my fave of the adventure so far as im half Welsh!
another great vid, and Doctor Who & Torchwood references too!
Love photo taken on the Torchwood step...
Vicki got to ride in the front seat.
Ryder Brow to Bellevue is timetabled as a one-minute journey. Maybe you could time that at some point in the next couple of weeks?
Birchgrove is my local stop!
Sorry extra words in there ! You get the drift .
It's the longest day of the year. It's 110 degrees F. I would give my arm for a bit of green. You guys . . .!
Shortest is between new haven town to new haven harbour I think
Pontypridd Station is a 1/4 mile long and i was the told it was the longest in the UK until the opened Waterloo international. Phill
you need to come to the Gwili railway when you get to Carmarthen!

I thought Sir Tom Jones would have got something a little more illustrious than an Arriva Wales Pacer.
The distance between Gorsforth and East Gorsforth is also very short!
Huyton and Roby are incredibly close also, check them out when you're in Liverpool!
8:41 same thing at Carmarthen Station where a planed expansion of the Gwili Valley Railway but never happened instead it went into Gwili
