Nice video and very informative like always. Like how is that Preyda ark. I have a Apex(germany) combination stone bought relative recently, misterious layers on it, very hard an compact, darker side is a greysh one almost blue when is wet, ider side is olive-green. Is about 3000-7000 grit but i'm not shure yet. Splash&go on both sides, work better with emulsion(babyoil2+dishsoap2+water6) , not friable at all and relatively fast.Under magnification darker side have a lot of very fine crack but not feeling it when i sharpen my fine leather cutter, somebody say me id posdible to be some artifitional ark, under magnification is very similar with you show on soft\hardarky's and vintage washita. But i'm very circumspect in that matter, not experieced in arky's.. Is welknown german Apex have a good collaboration with arkansas stone providers.
apex has a website with all their stones in pdf catalogues you might find it there. all these synthetic "arkansas" from German brands are synthetic corund, they only use the name to describe the product. because arkansas is synonymous for really hard stone. The kinda stuff that a 60 year old goldsmith would look for in a stone Its a shame that their websites and stone descriptions are stuck in the 90s, because a lot of these stones and of the other german brands are actually worth a look, but basically only obtainable by giving them a call or e-mail and then its pretty random what you actually bought. But Never got my hands on a cheaper black ark, or who could forget the 50€ degussit like ultra fine ruby clone
Hi Keith great to see a new vid I always look forward to it I also was curious bout those stones and your right they ground up odd cuts and put it in a binder now I want one lol
Hey Johnny, thanks for stopping by, good to hear from ya. Yeah, they're ground up rock, in a binder, sort of a hybrid I guess. This one is pretty nice. Would love to try the 1k out. We'll see how that goes....Happy Holidaze and happy honing too!
I have been waiting for someone to do a deep dive into these stones. I don't have the skills or knowledge to really investigate how stones behave, although I can double check someones results and see if the match up to what I am seeing. Such is life, LOL!
i can get my bushcraft knife to shave arm hair after 1k naniwa pro. but my straight razor obviously will not shave shit after 1k. i dont get it. maybe becasue im free hand sharpeing the knife. anyway. have you ever free hand sharpened a straight razor like a hunting or bushcraft knife? or even a chef knife?
I shave after bevel set on occasion, off a 1k or 1.5k synth; I show a 3 pass shave after bevel set in one of my videos actually. If an edge can't manage a shave after setting the bevel, then that bevel wasn't set correctly. I have free-hand honed wedge razors, yes.

Hello, I have no personal experience with the brand Apex but I do recall seeing synth Arks from Apex....so it's possible I think.

That feedback sounds like a stone I've used, but I can't remember what it was for the life of me. So satisfying.
I had been curious about these Arkansas waterstones for quite a while. Interesting.
Synth arks?! Good to see another vid Keith!
Yeah, seems weird but fake Arks were being made long ago. They were pretty awful. This one is pretty good though.
@@KeithVJohnson1 Yeah, that is what I was worried about, that it'd be like a re-constituted Ark that they made a few decades ago for some reason.
