I thought it would be fun to test out my new parallel palette at Max Ginsburg's studio with a quick alla prima painting session. Thought this would be a cool little educational clip on how a approach a block in and first session of a portrait.davidkassan.com
the 13 minutes spent on this video has been more instructive then the last four hours of instructional video posted on you tube that i have watched. thank you.
watching this video not only taught me a lot on painting, but also helped ease my mind and rekindled my passion for art as an escape medium, as it's own world, as it's own life----thank you David Kassan
I have watched this a couple of times and I am always transfixed. Your work is so strong and it is tied so clearly to your strong sense of drawing and conception of form. What I really admire is the way your paint "clings" to the original drawing and to watch you build off of the grisaille is truly remarkable. Good luck with your Holocaust survivor project. The work is stunning. Take care.
Thanks for checking out the video, I start out with an oil pastel stick, that I taped to a brush so that I would have more distance on it, so i could use it like a brush, i don't fix it, i do rub it into the surface to blur out the original block in drawing.
Thank you! I’m curious do you remember what you were listening to?
They are both such beautiful compositions.......the painting and the music. Love them both.
Wow! Mr. Kassan, your mad art skills make it look easy and effortless! Loved it!
Good Demo, great playing Roger.
I enjoy seeing how each master artist has their own unique manner of approaching the science and art of painting. Excellente!
You should really feel honored if anything, David's a great artist and this is a beautiful video.
Have always like your work but recently saw one of your portraits in it's frame and hanging and I was BLOWN away. You are MAGNIFICENT! God Bless.
Loved this, I felt as though you were sculpting the canvas. It slowly raised to the surface. I am on my way to your site now!!!!. Beautiful work. I am familiar with your style but to see you work inspired me to get back to my canvas for my own enjoyment.
thank you.

Very cool, thanks for posting David! I especially loved the ending with the little man on the subway!
Wonderful, very very good technique, perfect distances/depth, insisted very well on the things which come closer to the eye, really impressed, big BRAVO!
Virgil Mihai
Wonderful. Sensitive and real, great technique and focus. And I really appreciate seeing your palette evolve simultaneously with the image development. Bravo.
Now I like that mirror idea. Absolutely Brilliant.
David, I love your portraits and the way u pulled this one together was genius! I hope u satisfy all your artistic goals and become disgustingly wealthy. Big fan here from the UK. All the best!
Thankyou so much ireslly love to watch you’re painting ! You’re unique ! God bless you !
This is just great, David, thank you so much for posting this.
At first I was surprised how upset Ms Sword was about you showing her filmed likeness in the beginning. But then, it is something different to paint of photograph someone, so I suppose separate consent releases make sense. I never would have expected this reaction, though. So this does not only show a astounding approach to ala prima painting, but it is also an example how important it is to communicate with the model.
Thanks!
Miracles DO happen! Such talent!
Seen a lot of tutorials on here, by so called "artists" who know seem to know nothing about colour/value/composition/technique etc......But this is a great job!...transparency in the shadow area's...great skin tone's....Nice one....
I enjoyed it. it was nice to see how you work on different sections at the same time.
Hi David, I am starting my first class next saturday and I hope that can achieve the greatness that your art shows some day. Keep on the good work!
FINALLY ANOTHER VIDEO, bloody amazing as always. keep it up david you never fail to impress
Wonderful detail and clarity. School of David Bailly but with a twist of impressionism in the tradition of Vermeer.
Fabulous! Thanks for letting us watch and learn!
BRAVO David, and old school artist!, somthing very valuable to me
fantastic painting !! great melody !!
Wow I'm so amazed! Everyone has to see your talent!
I think he's painting over a standard white canvas which he previously prepared with an underpainting (oil painting with a mixture of medium and turpentine) in grey. This helps to understand colours better than over a white background. Notice how the pallette is more or less in the same colour. I'd recommend you this video also in UA-cam on the matter: "how to mix colors with oil paint", I think it's pretty helpful.
Bravo Maestro !
Thanks SinisterFelix, I hear you about the communication with the model, its been over a week since i have reached out to Betty and I have not heard back. The video was not shot secretly, i had the cam going the entire time, and even had to get that close up that is repeated in the video. I just assumed that everything was kosher, and the model release that i guess was signed should cover this, especially since i paid a portion of the model's fees that day.
Wonderful, inspiring video David. Thank you. (and thank you to Betty Sword, for being a great model!).

This is possibly the best video on youtube! i love it. would you ever consider showing how you do some individual strokes? what i mean is, as i'm self taught, i often dont know simple things like how often artists like you clean there brushes between colours etc or maybe not often at all - real basic stuff. Anyway i'll look through your vids now! +1 sub thanks loads.
that handset thing is brilliant. i need!
Hi,
Thanx for sharing, a superb clip, I notice that you don't move your head much! Where is Betty when you are painting her?
Looks to me like he starts out with John Howard Sanden's method, then his own particular genius takes over.....Love the palette !

De Lujo, Maestro
A number of the models that I work with welcome videos and publicity like this since it usually helps them to get jobs posing in the city. I think this sort of reaction might actually serve as negative publicity, I hope it doesn't, Betty was really amazing to paint and stood stone still.
Wow! Do you recommend oil or acyrlic paints? Also what light bulb do you recommend for good lighting?
WOW! Awesome!
so inspiring!!!!!
Nothing short of amazing. Would love to know the palette selection, looks mostly made of earth tones. Also is that oil in the black cap?
+Matt TPC Matt, I made this graphic to show how David lays out his colours in the portrait on his DVD. It's on my FB art page here: facebook.com/fergusryan.art/photos/pb.195075177173035.-2207520000.1454287452./795922303754983/?type=3&theater

Hey, so awesome painting ! I wonder, what kinda colors are there ?
Brilliant!!!!
I love this, but, what are you using at the start of the video? Pencil? Paint? I can't really tell. Help please?
hello David, can you tell me please, what's that pencil you use to sketch with at the beginning? thanks
so much talent ! what kind of canvas are you using?
you inspire me
could you tell me what materials do you use? above all the medium and canvas preparation before starting- it would be very helpful - thanks
WOW awesome man.........
Excuse me but what is alla prima? Is a a type of paint or is it a certain technique/approach to painting? Or is it something else entirely?
when the work was written in one go)
Wet-on-wet, or alla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt), is a painting technique, used mostly in oil painting, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint. (google)
@ David Kassan:
Awesome work! thanks for showing.

Also, what mixture are you using to outline the figure?
Thanks,
Pablo.
