Do practice the teach before game night so you are ready when everyone arrives. Pretend it's a presentation you have to prepare for work or school and get it as smooth and short as possible. Everyone will greatly appreciate it and you'll be like Rodney Smith Jr.
"Leave a comment, I'm sure he'll oblige". Unbelievable. Interesting take on analysis paralysis, and seeing it more about interrupting "game flow". This is one of the aspects of AP that I think sometimes gets misunderstood. It's not that people don't want you to have adequate time to take your turn and make a thoughtful decision, but if your turns are taking double the time of everyone else's, you are messing with the game flow. If you take a long time with your turn, and so does everyone else... flow maintained. It's usually when one person is out of balance with everyone else that the problems that arise from AP get more pronounced. Possibly an indication that the game isn't the right fit for that group, due to the group dynamic. Appreciate that perspective on game flow J&J!
This was so fun! Don’t be distracted is the one I will echo. The best thing about boardgames is putting technology away and getting to spend time together face-to-face.
Thanks for the video! I have a couple to add: *Do be patient.* The analysis paralysis caveat is (to me) double-edge: while trying to keep pace with the game, there is the underlying feeling of not trying to give away the game to the next player in turn order. Board games-wise, especially heavier ones, some don't yield much planning ahead as it may depend on the other players' turns. Game nights-wise, usually the case for me is a spontaneous sort of full of unknowns: how many people will show up, what games they may bring, who may arrive late or depart early, friends or new friends-to-be, and notably those that play to learn & have fun vs play to win outright, among others. Furthermore, people who know the game inside and out may take their turns fairly quicker than those new to the game-or even new to the whole new world of euro / strategy games. Especially during the pandemic, most game nights have been a part of gatherings with the immediate family. I'm the one in the fam (a father and four younger sisters) that has been introducing new games to them, therefore am the one teaching, facilitating and guiding them through each game. Quite often there is a lot of family conversation between us during a game, which introverted, socially-anxious me does not contribute very much to-focusing much on the game at hand. I've been thanked countless times for suggesting great games and my patience in teaching them. So whoever long ago wisely said "patience is a virtue" applies well to board games. :) *Do keep an open mind.* Each person comes from a unique upbringing & lifetime. Each person may prefer certain themes & mechanics than others. Each person may not like a board game another loves. Each person at the table should be mindful to their fellow players. After all, games should be a means to break from reality's struggles and have fun with others who love them. :)
I think Jeff will appreciate this one. If someone takes the time to paint the minis please be respectful. Yes they’re made to be handled but not tossing them around Willy nilly. They put a lot of time into them.
@@jbrantz9554whenever he says, “My name is Rodney Smith”, my whole family always say “ Hello Rodney” to the TV. We forget we aren’t actually friends with him after almost a decade of learning our games from him.
Suggestion: don't do game nights. do game mornings or afternoons. That's when people will be at their most energy and typically patient before any stress over the day may be there. Also, it saves people from having to drive in one of the more dangerous times of the day as well as let's everyone get home at a reasonable time to unwind and/or get ready for the next day (assuming they have jobs and it's a weekend game night)
love this. im a BIG fan of the silliness lol. but the note on AP is VERY real lol. i love puzzly games or combo-y games and sometimes I get very caught up in trying to get an amazing combo i forget someone on the other side of the table is waiting patiently lol.
The chips thing is real. We have friends that will play games but they arent "gamers" they ate chips and now everytime i see the greese print on my scout deck it bothers me
I love when Jeff breaks, haha Great points. I've experienced the plus 1s and non-board game person combo several times. We even had partners who didn't like board games show up to a board gaming cottage weekend away because they had FOMO. Very awkward. Also, there are certain cheaper party games that I will sleeve so people can eat chips or whatever while we play. I want people to be able to enjoy their game nights and food can be a big part of house gatherings. It just depends on the crowd :)
i will tell you a little story. we had a game night with another couple we wer 4 people playing. and we have a newborn baby., they stayd til the sun came up ! and we had to get up early for the baby !. we actually had to ask them leave ... some people just dont have respect for time. long story short we invite them over like once a year after that xD
If you are playing a specific game, do set it up beforehand. Sometimes you may wanna wait with some parts if you are showing rules stuff, but minimize the patience people need, so we can get to the having fun..
This video was so different and so much fun as well. I love your creativity. No, seriously. I'm not only talking about this video. Don't get me wrong, I watch and love game reviews and stuff. And I will always be grateful for every bit of entertainment. But this one - or my favorite, the love letter to board games... That's what I live for 😂 I appreciate what you two do and I'm so much looking forward what there is yet to come. I'll just never stop loving this channel. Promise.❤
i don't know if i have seen acting skills this good since i don't know when. bravo! such a great video. on a side note. Jeff has some really hairy legs! Damn.
- And the award for Best Supporting Actor goes to... Jeff! - #1 reason not to bring Monopoly is that everyone -- even people who don't like it -- already owns at least one copy, as seen in this video. - Ghosting is the worst! Just text and say that you're not coming, or that you'll be 30min late, so the rest of us can play something else in the meantime!
Surprisingly, I actually do not have a copy of Monopoly! (Unless you count Monopoly Deal, which is such a wonderfully vicious game that plays super fast.)
As the host- Do protect your games as much as possible. I think the host should consider an investment in card sleeves ( I'm talking to myself here) I played a game recently where a few of the cards were just marked up and ruined...I was like oh no, I didn't see that coming, I should have protected those cards better.
That was a fun video, and the soundtrack was on point! That said, I was with you right up until you said "Do clean up". Possibly my favourite bit of playing a board game is packing it all neatly away again afterwards. Don't take that away from me :)
Rule 1. Understand appropriate games to play based on whose coming over. Some people are not going to do well with 4 hour strategy games. The wife and I have 2 specific couple we know enjoy them, so when we want to play those we'll only invite one of those couples. Otherwise it's lighter fare and party games.
Loved loved this video! Only disagreement- the small house game night are a whole table of analysis paralysis lovers. lol loved your whole video. Seriously cheese fish , do you know how much I payed for frost haven.
I always have a warm up game that lasts around 20 minutes. It allows people to have fun while waiting for people who get off late or are stuck in traffic, or a kid with a separation meltdown. Life happens. As the warm up game is wrapping up, I'll text the latecomer so we can plan accordingly. If it's a big game, though, we need to start close to time so people can get their rest.
I hate Monopoly. Guess what my granddaughter bought when I had her this weekend. There was a Japanese themed Monopoly board that matched her figurines so she had to have it.
Keep conversations light so the game is in focus. Drives me nuts when people start talking about something and all the focus goes to the convo and nobody remembers who’s turn it is. The game doesn’t need to be 3 hours when it’s meant to be an hour.

Right?
Don’t bring beverages without tops. That is very helpful for spills.
I always use a travel water bottle with a flip straw. Almost foolproof if I get klutzy (which I've been known to do).
Don't do what Donny don't does!
The "don't forget to shower" carries with it an implied "don't forget to brush your teeth".
Ayyy my man got his hands on A Few Acres of Snow, how you liking it?
