    Hey Pete,
    Have been watching your videos while shopping for a kayak. Want to say thank you for all the useful info you've posted. I ended up purchasing the Aspire 105 and its fit my needs really well here in eastern Pa. Really sucks that winter is coming soon as I only got 4 trips in so far. Thanks again Pete!

      ***** Glad you found the videos helpful! To be honest I must have watched every single kayak related video on YT trying to gather all the info. I could. Wow! there are alot of yaks out there....the Aspire fits my needs very well and I couldn't be happier....such a versatile little boat:) I'm sure you will grow to really love your 105! I'm working on a video to show some mods/additions I've done to my yak, so stay tuned you might get some ideas. Thanks for watching, take care & Float On!

    Pete, thank you so much for this great review. I've been looking at so many boats online and the Aspire definitely "inspires me to aspire for adventures." You covered everything I needed to know that other websites didn't. Thank you! I'm 5'1" and weight 123# and plan to use it for yakpacking too!

      Hey OlliMSa, Glad to hear my video struck your adventure bone! I really stand behind the versatility of the WS Aspire...hasn't let me down yet! You will totally enjoy what this yak has to offer. Most importantly, if it gets you out there exploring your local rivers/lakes, then my mission is accomplished! Yakpacking has turned into a slight obsession for me lately and I'm excited to get others into it as well. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your new Aspire! Float on!

    Thanks Pete for really great videos, I am really hook on your site! I've been paddling sit on's for a few years now & paddling throughout the year, but after watching your WS Aspire 100, I went out and bought a 105!
    Being in the UK, its perfect for rivers I paddle here! I've now outfitted it for my own yakpacking, I'm doing the Thames in May this year 135 miles in 5 days!
    I really love this yak, WS have built a brilliant yak, their attention to detail along with your enthusiasm & videos make, my enjoyment even better!!
    Thank you Peter & keep posting your adventures!
    Happy paddling

      Tor Leifsen Hey Tor, glad you like the videos and congrats on your new WS Aspire! I gotta say, I cannot be happier w/ mine! It's a well thought out yak and is perfect for all my needs. Also great to hear you're already planning a nice long trek on the Thames! If it wasn't such a long paddle from Arkansas to your neck of the woods....I would love to accompany you! Stay tuned for more videos soon, as paddling season is right around the corner. Would also like to see your yakpacking journey when completed! Thanks for watching, take care and float on! Hi, Pete! I just discovered and love your videos. I've always loved being on or near water, i.e. canoeing, boating, swimming, etc., but recently got the kayaking bug after taking an introductory class through Five Rivers MetroParks here in Dayton, Ohio, which is a great area for paddlesports. I've been looking at different 10-12 ft kayaks and got to try out a few Wilderness Systems kayaks 2 weeks ago and fell in love with the Aspire because of the skeg and easy to open stern hatch, which I opened and closed on the water one-handed. So I'm getting an Aspire 105 for $699 through Whitewater Warehouse this next week and am so excited. I might be paying $200-300 more over a kayak from Dick 's Sporting Goods or Walmart but I'm going to be a lot happier and more comfortable sitting for hours on adventures. Since I'm new to owning my own kayak and am going to be doing a lot of solo adventures myself, I'm wondering how do you get back to your vehicle from where you're at 3-50 miles down river and you're by yourself?

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton  10 років тому +2

      Avacarho First, good choice on purchasing a bit more expensive boat from the start....you will totally appreciate that skeg system, rear hatch size/accessibility, and the Phase 3 seat (super comfortable for longer days) that you get with the Aspire. I too was looking at cheaper boats to get started with, but for the types of different kayaking I was interested in doing, the Aspire hit an all levels! Well, all except serious whitewater....that's enevitably down the line though:)
      As far as shuttling the yak to and from put-ins & take-outs....my lovely wife usually is tasked with that chore unless I am with friends with vehicles. Most of my over-night trips are solo, so she drops me off one place and usually I'm on the water for 1-2 days then we have a pre-arranged plan for pick-up at a general time and a specific location. Sometimes I wait... sometimes she waits but it's always worth it. I guess I'm lucky to live about within 30 min. or less of multiple rivers or lakes, so I can usually work out a ride either to or from the put-in. Also, lately, I've been diong some flat water fishing from the yak....and let me tell ya that's been a BLAST (especially since the rivers have been to low to float) And you can do lake paddling alone.... no shuttling required. Maybe working on a video re: that so stay tuned! Stoked to hear your gonna be adventuring with your yak soon....it's GREAT for the soul....take some vids. Have Fun! Float On!

    Hi, Pete! I bought my Aspire 105 last night after my moving water class and picked it up tonight. I can't wait to get it out on the river but I've got to register it with the Ohio DNR before I do so. Bummer, but I don't want a hefty fine. By the way, I had a major OS! moment during my moving water class when the rental paddle I was using broke in half right when I was getting ready to go through a class 2 whitewater flow. No biggy. I put one half in the kayak and paddled like the dickens as if I was in a canoe. I hit the bottom of the whitewater, which of course flowed over the bow, and I kept paddling strong then turned towards shore while avoiding the boiling area of the river that could have easily capsized me. The instructor said I handled the mishap like a trooper. The rental kayak was the same as the one I bought. Too bad we can't post pics here. In the meantime, keep floating on!

      Avacarho Wow! That sounds nuts! Glad to hear you came out unscathed and didn't have second thoughts about your new intrest in paddling. It's amazing how nimble and stable kayaks are (even without 100% of it's vital components...paddles etc. lol) Prime yak-time is coming up soon as the weather gets cooler and hopefully some more rain....at least where I live. Enjoy your Aspire and your river adventures!

    Thanks for the review on this. I have been looking for a kayak. I went out on flat water in windy conditions to camp in an inflatable Intek raft with a friend of mine, it didn't go so well. The guys with the Wilderness Systems kayaks we were with were just gone in no time. Anyways, lesson learned.... this looks to be a really good kayak.

      Jon Smallwood Thanks for watching Jon, I too at one time tried the inflatable route....with similar results :( Kayaks are really efficient, quiet, nearly indestructable, cheap to maintain, and useful on many types of water. Not to mention they can carry a considerable amount of gear, are pretty easy to transport and I've been fishing out of mine lately...which I havn't done in years....they're a blast! Take care!

    Thanks for the review of the Aspire 100. I am new to kayaking and wanting to purchase my first kayak. All I have to compare by are the rentals I have used. I am presuming that the rentals are the most cost effective for the rental companies and are not performance driven; most have terrible tracking and are very uncomfortable. I am looking for a recreational kayak that will preform well in shallow running swift water rivers where you will most likely be be dragging or bottoming out frequently. I am concerned about durability, but I also want something with very comfortable seating, plenty of leg room (I am 6'1"), good tracking, and speed. Wanting to stay in the range of a 10 foot boat due to only have a 6 ft truck bed for transport, I keep coming back to the Wilderness System's Aspire 105 and Pungo 105, but now I have discovered the Aspire 100. I have seen many videos on the other two, but almost all reviews are done on smooth water lakes which does not really tell me how stable these are in light rapid situations, so do you feel this has good stability and durability for class 1 rapids? also thank you for covering details that the others did not, such as a replaceable skid plate and the issue with gravel getting stuck in the skeg.

      @@PeteBraginton Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my question and for all the valuable information you provided me with. I took your advice and drove 60 miles to get to the nearest Wilderness System dealer that had these yaks in stock. I was able to sit in the Aspire 100 and 105 , and the Pongo 105. You were correct as to the fit for my height in the 100. I was able to move my legs freely in and out of the boat without issue, but I still felt just a little cramped. The Aspire 105 provided that extra space needed to feel just a little more free to move and stretch. I found the Pogo 105 to have even a little more room and actually felt a little more comfortable sitting wise, but they both use the same seating system, so this could be because they were both adjusted differently and not fine tuned to my posture. The Pogo has a very nice designed dashboard which can be very user friendly; furthermore, the Pogo has a split V hull which may make it a little faster, but would cause it to feel less stable with more rocking motion. The Aspire has a flat bottom and the skeg which you demonstrated in you video, so it appears it would be a much better choice for stability. Guess I need to weight the pros and cons to conclude what's more important to me, but at the moment I am leaning towards the Aspire...as you mentioned..."no Eskimo rolls!" Also, you have given me some other brands I am not familiar with which to investigate. Thanks so much for you video, and for sharing you knowledge and opinions with me. I feel confident that because of this I will make a better educated and wise choice in the end. I subscribed to your channel and plan to view some more of your videos in the near future. Best of kayaking adventures to you :)

    Hi, thank you for the comprehensive overview (and your other "accessories" vids are phenomenal too). I am going to buy one tomorrow AM. I was on the fence however your video really helped convince me to go for it! What do you think a fair price for a 2014 used Aspire 100 would be (with a nice bb paddle)? Thanks!

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton  8 років тому

      +Paul Bueno I would say $500-$600 would be fair for a used Aspire in pretty fair condition. Or, maybe see if you could get your hands on a "demo" yak from a retailer...winter is a good time to buy as most sales are happening in the Spring....might be able to save some bucks buying it off season. Paddles are more of a personal preference, but $100 would get you a good rigid paddle from about any manufacturer...without getting into the really high end stuff. Thanks for watching & I hope that helps!

    Hi Pete, thanks for the review. Originally was looking at the Wilderness Pungo 120 to fish on lakes, class 1 and occasional class 2. Then, your video popped up next. I'm struggling to decide between the Pungo or the Aspire. You mentioned that you researched before you bought. Any thoughts on the Pungo in comparison to the Aspire?

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton  8 років тому

      Hey ranmangolf, thanks for checking out my WS Aspire video! I was looking at the Pungo pretty seriously as it is a very well liked kayak among paddlers. Compared to the Aspire is is quite similar, in fact I believe I read somewhere the Aspire is a slightly updated & modified version of the Pungo. Both have a very stable hull design, Phase 3 Air Pro seat (most comfortable & adjustable of any yak seat that I've sat in IMHO), and both kayaks actual weight and max load capacity are very similar (in the 10' length). The Pungo has, I believe, a 10', 12', 12' angler, and a 14' version...whereas the Aspire comes in only a 10' and 10.5'. The Pungo's are slightly wider (just a couple inches). The real selling point for me was the retractable skeg, only featured on the Aspire. It makes a world of difference for tracking and stability in windy conditions or while maneuvering swift water. Especially helpful on a shorter 10' yak like mine...shorter yaks tend to want to "pull" to the opposite side of your paddle stroke, which can get frustrating & exhausting when one is trying to cover distance. The Aspire also features an in-molded console in the front of the cockpit (good place to mount accessories, quick reach items, versatile drink holder). Some Pungos I've seen are sold with a removable console made by Harmony Gear, that offers front cockpit accessory/storage as well...but not all...not sure why. It (kayak konsole) can be purchased separately but will not fit the Aspire due to it's in-molded console. Also, the Aspire has a drag plate (also replaceable) to save wear/tear on the stern hull while dragging to/from launch...don't think the Pungo does. Depending on what you want to do in/from your kayak, both of those models are a safe bet...I just prefer the Aspire for the skeg, dimensions/specs. (personal preference) and I think it's a wee bit cheaper than the Pungo. Check out some of my other kayaking/yackpacking videos to see how I've set my Aspire up for general use, camping, and fishing...might give you ideas or a better visual description! Apologies if this was kinda drawn out...you're a good man to have read this far!:) If you have any other questions, feel free to give me a shout...I'd be happy to help if I can. Thanks for watching and Float On!!!

    New subscriber to you Pete. Good vid, I'm really looking into getting Kayaking. So I can venture out unto the lakes & Rivers I metal detect in here in Colorado. Hello G. Funny you mention it, but I have gotten kinda interested in metal detecting since I have started kayaking lol! Occasionally, on trips, I have seen people MD'ing in the river as I float by. Some have found watches, jewelery, knives, sunglasses, musketballs, etc. Seems that the two hobbies would work well together! I live in Arkansas now, but proudly display the Colorado sticker on my kayak as I have had some great times in your beautiful state... that, and I am originally from Wyoming so we are practically neighbors! Hope you get into kayaking, you will totally enjoy it as an extension to metal detecting! Thanks for watching!

      G. Woods I love it! Did about 40miles over 3 nights recently and it had enough room for everything to go inside the hull, clean deck. I'm 5'7 about 150lbs by the way, this thing is super stable. Stood up for a while to test it and it did fine, tracks well, easy to turn. All the good reviews you'll find are accurate. I've fished out of it a couple times and it's doable ( until I get a Tarpon!) did some mods to it as well, maybe I'll make a video of it soon, a buddy on that same trip ( we both got this model at the same time) did get pinned on a downed tree and filled up his boat completely. if it had been deeper water, I'm not sure would have been able to retrieve it. I highly recommend the aspire 105 for rec and yakpacking

      Two more notes, I did have issues with tiny rocks jamming the skeg. no big deal, also when skeg is down and u rock side to side you can hear it hitting the walls of the cavity it sits in, if your sneaking up on fish it may be an issue

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton  8 років тому

      Hey Adam, The 105 for sure!!!....it has larger cockpit dimensions(width & length), I believe it is about 6 inches longer in total hull length and would be better suited for someone your size. I would also recommend sitting in a 105, so you can get a first hand feel of the fit before you buy. Even better, if possible, try to demo one on the water. Nothing worse than getting a kayak that is too big or small....it could ruin the whole experience. My friend is about your size and really loves his Dagger Katana...he felt cramped in his previous 2 yaks,( Perception Carolina 12 & Perception Zydeco 10) , says the Katana10 hits the sweet spot in the middle for someone his size! Hope that helps you out!

    • @Adam-wg1qt
      @Adam-wg1qt 8 років тому

      Thanks Pete! I am going to test a couple out in the next month to get a feel for my likes and dislikes with different models. You are right though, it is difficult to do online shopping for something I don't have a lot of familiarity with. When I'm searching for kayaks to fit my height most of the searches are coming back with paddle sizes so that doesn't help me much. LOL. I appreciate the help - that may deter me from the aspire - I would hate to feel crammed while riding.

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton  8 років тому

      +Adam Scott Absolutely agree, it certainly is hard kayak shopping online! I tried 4 different yaks that all had the same features I wanted, and all had a slightly different fit/feel. It was hard to make a decision on one yak that covered all my bases. For me it came down to the Aspire because it fit my body type snugly, but not restrictively and the seat was by far and away the most comfortable of any of the others I tried. You will be doing yourself a favor by test paddling a few makes/models and going with the one that suits you best. Good luck and Float on!!

    • @Adam-wg1qt
      @Adam-wg1qt 8 років тому

      +Pete Braginton Hey Pete - I found what I think to be a pretty decent deal on a used Palmico 120 12ft. Seller wants around $200 for what appears to be an older model judging from the storage container behind the seat is different than the double-lock door on the newer ones. Is this a good deal? Would you have hesitations about this model? Thanks!

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton  8 років тому

      +Adam Scott That sounds very reasonable Adam. Take a close look at the hull & make sure it isn't super scratched or warped in any way (usually a tell tale sign of how it was kept/treated). Also check the seal around the dry hatch for damage. Make sure the foot braces function properly and the seat adjusts as well. Other than that, sounds like a great deal on an older model...might be just the ticket. Even better if they have a paddle, dry bags, or PFD they would be willing to throw in! The price sounds good and if it passes your visual inspection...it would be a cost effective way to get yourself on the water! Depending on the model year, harmonygear.com sells replacement parts for many kayaks and you may find anything that you would need to replace/upgrade, could be purchased seperately if needed. Hope that helps you out!

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton  10 років тому

      I use a Harmony skirt...not sure on the exact model....It has a zippered opening about 3/4 down the front, with an accessory pocket. It is nylon not neoprene. Actually it was the only one at the yak shop that fit my cockpit (sizing to fit the cockpit is very important)...the zipper makes it easier to get in and out w/o removing the skirt from the boat each time. Now, I'm a thin guy, so this works for me as it may not for some. I typically only use my skirt for winter paddling or in the warmer months when it rains

    Here we are in 2021, and I don't think they make these anymore. I am just getting into Kayaking and I have search the internet for either the 100 or 105, and there are nowhere to be found. Not even Amazon has them.

      Strange...
      Maybe WS is updating or changing the Aspire all together?
      Seems like that design has been out for a few years, maybe they are releasing another version of the Aspire soon?
      Did you try austinkayak.com
      or ack.com...might have some left.

      @@PeteBraginton I just checked and they will have them back in stock on April 15, 2021. And if they get them on the 15, many other stores probably will get them. I'm out in Sunny Southern California and there probably lots of places that will have them. Thanks for the review and thanks for the link...... Rick

    What do you mean by "tracking" in regards to the skeg?

      ken baker in reference to how the kayak moves after each paddle stroke. The skeg helps keep the boat going in a straight line as you shift sides with your stroke.

    1:56 - the skeg cable housing tube should not be there. I don't know who designed the boat, but whoever it is should be ashamed of that. It could easily be routed back or forward along the keel. Whenever you use the storage, there's going to be stress placed on that tube and on the seal where it contacts the hull, and eventually that's going to develop stress cracks and perhaps even break off entirely. I'm looking for a kayak like this, but that design flaw alone takes this kayak out of consideration for me.
