im starting but i admire u a lot , always feel so bad about starting and seeing instagram full of big artist, all people doing big and amazing paints, but i just giving my time, learning and trying to focus on myself
This might be a bit controversial but one thing that has helped me a lot after going freelance is this: Try to look at the people you follow on ig in two categories. The ones that inspire you and the ones that only make you feel negative emotions about art in general. Try to be brutally honest with yourself when doing this. That might mean acknowledgment of jealousy, feelings of inferiority or lack of optimism in ever getting to that level. Then the hard part is to just unfollow everyone that doesn’t inspire you in a positive way. Art is not a competition but it can definitely feel like one with the way algorithms pit us against each other in visibility. These days I have about the same amount of artists that I follow but the difference is that they all do something different to what I want to do and they all inspire me to be productive and creative. This process required me to look at the ugly side of all my creative fears and it’s not easy exercising self awareness on those parts. The benefits outweigh the difficulty of this change in the things you see daily and they have had such a positive effect on my relationship with creativity that it’s something I would recommend for anyone that goes through those feelings on a regular basis.
Hope you have fun with it :) When I bought one for myself it completely changed my productivity because I’m now able to paint anywhere and I never leave the house without it.
I always appreciate your videos. You are always very genuine and seem truly interested in helping us budding artists 😊 Thank you for sharing your knowledge and motivation ✊
I just told myself to quit character design everything I had done looked so awful it was exhausting and felt too hard so I came here to get back into landscapes but honestly because of you I want to get back into it I honestly thank you for the words man
Landscapes aren’t easier, whatever you choose you will find the difficulty in it because you will naturally always be striving to get better at it. The difficulty is there to stay so I don’t recommend using that feeling as a measuring stick for your progress. Look up your own character drawings or landscape pieces from 3 years ago and you’ll see how far you’ve come.
This is so incredible and a lot of what you said really resonated with me. I have recently gotten back to working on art after a way too long break and it has been a big issue of mine to not know where to start and to focus on the small details but I'm working on it! Thanks for the video and the art
It’s literally my pleasure. Especially in situations like these where I have a sponsor and don’t have to squeeze in impossible extra painting between commissions. I’m still in a phase where every video takes about 6 extra days to what I thought it would take.
I've been slowly going through your videos, and really have enjoyed your teaching style. Thanks for doing these. One question I had was, what was the painting you referenced, was it Violent of the Dead? Who painted it?
Hello, Angrymikko! Your painting style is charming! My english not good, i’m understand 1/3, but listen to you and observe of your process so pleasantly. Uniquely, subscribe. Good luck!
Hey Mikko, for beginners to painting as a fun hobby would you suggest following tutorials and taking fundamentals, or just start with leaves, then branches, then trees, then more foliage and landscape elements over time and enjoy the process? I'm not sure if I should use reference images to evaluate if I'm on the right track, and just be patient. Thanks!
Here in Finland I’m literally thigh-deep in snow but where you live you might have access to an actual leaf outside. I would 100% recommend bringing one on your table as a reference instead of using a picture online. Regarding the review process. Comparing your results with the photo doesn’t give information on whether or not your results are successful. You’re going to have to also develop a way to review your own work by comparing it to the results when you first started. “Tutorial” I’ve noticed, is an incredibly tricky word when it comes to art. I make a lot of tutorials on this channel on how to use certain tools or possible ways to approach common visual problems. These I don’t make just for fun but because I think that information is useful. My power button trick for example is something that nobody would stumble upon on their own but it helps checking values and thus just makes art in any style faster. However I started using the word “process” for videos like these as I noticed that a number of people assumed that the word tutorial meant repeating the same painting. I want to be very clear that I’m not annoyed or mad that some like to do this. It’s absolutely fine with me. However as an art teacher, I cannot in good conscience recommend that OVER application of said information into you own aesthetic, subject and way of working. Imagination and your own way of painting doesn’t happen overnight and it’s dangerous to think that should be something to go after only after decades of realistic studies. I hope that people understand that I’m saying this to help. If I chose to make tutorials like that it would be so much easier to grow this channel because everyone’s posts would basically be free advertising for my own art and channel. I have chosen to put my money where my mouth is in regards to this and I don’t share such paintings anymore on my instagram stories. I fully support the artists who make art that way but sharing them on my stories would send a message that it’s the way to get free visibility on my feed. That would harm the progress of those artists and would only serve to put me on a gross pedestal. I would feel terrible for allowing that. I can’t explain this reasoning to everyone and I’m sure some feel annoyed by not getting those features on my feed. In these situations I just hope that they will keep painting long enough to someday see that I was trying to help.
@@angrymikko Wow! I was not expecting such an informative response, this was very useful! I totally understand that you're saying this to help, and I am really inspired by you sticking to your values and what is ultimately the best advise, despite all the flashy trends that would lead to more views but leading people down a bad path. It totally makes sense what you're saying about tutorials. For all of the paintings I've done so far (
Mikko, thanks for your inspiring videos! I like your idea that it is easier to improve an imperfect picture then to improve an empty page. Btw that works with writing a thesis as well ))) You recommend to start with a leaf than branch than a tree... could you please make a video on your way of painting a leaf or a branch? I like your ways but it is true that the whole landscape is a bit too big for a beginner) it would be interesting to see your approach to smith smaller and easier. Thank you.
It shows that you have lots of experience and life wisdom. You have a relaxing voice, I really liked listening to you. Thank you for the advices, I can't wait to start implementing them! One question: what is the name of the music played at the end? it is so beautiful!
I’m sorry for not being able to answer that as I can’t afford to keep past projects stored on my hard drives. I have 3 ongoing music subscriptions to run this channel and sometimes the long format videos have playlists of 70+ songs. The best guess would be to Shazam the part you’re thinking of. Again sorry for not being more helpful with this.
Good video. very helpful. What tablet/pen would recommend for a starter who doesn't want to invest in a really expensive tab? I have chromebook and pc, but the chromebook doesn't have a great touchscreen.
Depends on the budget. Pencils are cheap and a well archived drawing can last a lifetime. At the end of the day the choice of tool isn’t as important as making the art. My first tablet was wacom volito and I loved it. Before I got an iPad I was already using procreate on my phone. There’s always SOME option that is available if you’re open to being flexible in exchange for being able to start right away.
Your paintings are awesome! I don't know you, but in my eyes you are a true artist! I love the way you talk about the feelings and emotions and how you "put your soul" to these masterpieces! Thanks for sharing! #trugglingbeginner
These are so informative! Thank you so much! The question I have now is: Do you ever experience tilt lag with the pen and palm rejection problems? I've tried many things in the past year and can't seem to fix it!
I guess a problem I have is the composition in the beginning, I can’t figure out how to make the blobs of color turn into actual shapes like rocks and things. Would sketching underneath before help or any tips you can provide?
Doing a sketch first for some is faster. Or block in with colour. If you start from something small then that part shouldn't be too long to get started. After a few hundred painting you should notice what method of blocking in you gravitate towards naturally. It's important to keep an eye out for things you actually LIKE to do as opposed to what you think the process should look like. Try not to let the online noise get in the way of you finding a workflow that gets you to paint the biggest volume of paintings possible. Pick a number of paintings, set a deadline and then just go for it. Publish everything.
another note, on tik tok someone pointed out she has children in the background singing the last little bit. Which for me implies what she said before about the same fate. and that little girls also know or experience on some level this pain, and that it is their fate even when their children

For all of the paintings I've done so far (
Amazing!!! 😮💗
I have school in 1 minute but I'm gonna watch this after lol, I bet it's great like always!! Edit: Thanks for the tips!!!
This is very inspiring thank you
Beautiful 👍
Mikko, thanks for your inspiring videos! I like your idea that it is easier to improve an imperfect picture then to improve an empty page. Btw that works with writing a thesis as well )))
You recommend to start with a leaf than branch than a tree... could you please make a video on your way of painting a leaf or a branch? I like your ways but it is true that the whole landscape is a bit too big for a beginner) it would be interesting to see your approach to smith smaller and easier.
Thank you.
One word.. Wowwwwww!!!
Thank you 😊
This is what i neeeded
Thank you .. Sensei!!
Your intro is really good. I just subsribed 😄
Hey
Can you please make a pack and/or write the brushes you use.
Thanks and keep up the work
X
Like said in this video the brush is Polar's Icecream Truck. It's part of my brushes for painters-set.
@@angrymikko thanks
what's the name of the background music during 20:30?
love your painting style btw
There’s always SOME option that is available if you’re open to being flexible in exchange for being able to start right away.
this video helped me sooooo much, thank you! what brush did you use for the painting?
Your paintings are awesome! I don't know you, but in my eyes you are a true artist! I love the way you talk about the feelings and emotions and how you "put your soul" to these masterpieces! Thanks for sharing! #trugglingbeginner
These are so informative! Thank you so much! The question I have now is: Do you ever experience tilt lag with the pen and palm rejection problems? I've tried many things in the past year and can't seem to fix it!
Can you make a video on how you do layers
Background songs tracklist? Btw I love your painting style! You're such an inspiration to me ✨
I guess a problem I have is the composition in the beginning, I can’t figure out how to make the blobs of color turn into actual shapes like rocks and things.
@@angrymikko thank you for the tips!
another note, on tik tok someone pointed out she has children in the background singing the last little bit. Which for me implies what she said before about the same fate. and that little girls also know or experience on some level this pain, and that it is their fate even when their children
Been watching your videos for the past year. Love your approach, style of art, and overall attitude. Thank you for bringing us these videos! I've learned a lot since I started watching.
Did my first painting on procreate....only took six hours but it turned out okay 🤗
When should I use layers when painting? Respond ASAP
may i ask what dimensions you tend to use? i want to get better at doing landscapes but i was stuck on what sort of canvas size is recomended
@angrymikko Do you teach a class on Skillshare? I'd love to take a class from you. Thanks.
