  • I have been working hard for almost a month now, working on painting prepping and painting out boats roof. we have chosen to paint the roof first as we are continuous cruisers and we keep things of our roof, we have had to do one move in the time it has taken to paint the roof, in between the first and second layer of top coat.
This is how we have done it as best as we could but I am sure it is by no means perfect, so if your painting your own roof then please do your own research also! but just know it has taken much longer that we originally thought it would.

Just finished repainting our roof, so I understand the work you have put in. The poly tunnel looked a great idea and hopefully kept insects and leaves off the wet paint. Good luck with the rest of the boat.

Hi Jasmin. You certainly had a lot of rust spots on your roof, I had nothing like that on mine. It's quite a chore and you've done an excellent job.

Very good work. It is all about the preparation and you two have done a nice job of it! Keep it up.

Really good video you guys! We are looking to touch in a few scratches and bubbles on our (recently ‘professionally’ painted) roof over the next few weeks. So your approach will be very helpful xo

You did the right thing with the preparation, when I did my city & guilds decorators apprenticeship ( 50 yrs ago ) there was a sign over the dept entrance doors " the three most important things to doing a correct painting and decorating job 1: preparation 2: preparation 3: preparation " every non decorator thinks the finishing coat is the most important but that's not so the most important is the primer / undercoat , it's like building a house on sand , it won't last very long .
Well done you two nice to see a job done properly .

Top Marks Jasmin. Especially using corded tools. I would add "Very Professional" except few yards would do such a thorough job as You and Sebastian did.

Nice job Jasmin, your hard work and detailed prep really paid off. Sebastian did a fine job of feathering out all those rust spots as well as a great bit of engineering the truss to hold the plastic sheeting. I like how you placed links to all the supplies you used ;) Finally, I would be GREATLY remiss if I didn't make mention of your BEAUTIFUL sweater, I believe you Brit's call them Jumpers, it shows you are clearly cursed with having excellent taste! ;) I enjoyed this one and thank you ;)

I've been painting for two months, I never realised just how difficult it can be to get everything prepped and a coat of paint on, the weather needs to be predictable, and it has not been [sigh]

Well done you two , did you have to fill the repairs with auto filler (polyester) and then sand down and then undercoat ?, if you want a sooper dooper finish sand down with wet`n´dry 300 grit between top coats just water and lightly sand down very easy .greetings from Austria

Just discovered (and subscribed) you, the canals and narrowboats about a week ago. I'm across the pond, but recently retired and I've fallen in love with the potential lifestyle. Anyways, to increase my knowledge I've been reading a couple of books you recommended on your vlog; "Ramlin Rose"and "Narrow Margins." A question: are you alone on your boat, and are there other single women on the canals? Really enjoy your channel. Thank you.

For doing this at home for personal repair, it doesn't make sense to have the PPE one would have if they did this for a living. I saw yall grinding without a respirator, since you guys where outside you'll be alright.
I would say at MINIMUM you need quality goggles and hearing protection! These power tools are loud, I know people at my job who are already going deaf after just 1 year.
Then again, you paint as needed so not a big deal.
If you want to stop paint from getting on your face the honeywell S8500 is a great choice
For clothing a generic Tyvek suit should work.

I want to speak on one last thing, TOOLS!
Time is money and money is time, if you want to bust rust/run through paint like nobody's business I recommend a right angle grinder.
Such as a DeWalt or Makita
      www.amazon.co.uk/DeWALT-DWE4206K-GB-Angle-Grinder-Yellow/dp/B00VXN7VS2l
Technically, a drill is not the right tool for the job. Angle grinders are much more powerful and ergonomic than the drill.
They also feature a wide array of attachments, sanding disk, wire wheels etc.
So in theory the angle grinder would take the place of both your drill and orbital sander and do the job much quicker.
      For sandpaper grit, I recommend 100 - 220
That was one of my gripes when I saw your video

Nice work on the roof! Your time to do it "right" will pay you back in multiples. Thank you for your great vlogs. (One thing: Eeeeek! A cheap pair of safety glasses whenever using handtools can save your eyesight for the rest of your life. Pleeeease, get in the habit wearing them and you'll soon feel uncomfortable without them.)

I use 3M products, and high quality masks [£5.00 each], they have proper industrial specification, and make the job safer.
I did my roof yesterday ............. well just the last coat, using Rustoleum Combo satin .................. it was so hot that I poured it on and smoothed with roller, this is not recommended technique on the sides!

  • @Peugot905
    @Peugot905 4 роки тому

I also recommend this kind of wire wheel.
Cuts through rust much faster, it's used all over the shipyard
    static.grainger.com/rp/s/is/image/Grainger/3AC17_AS01?$zmmain$
This kind of wire wheel will easily dig into the pits and take out rust quickly.
Using an abrasive pad to remove rust will take forever imo, the wire wheel is flexible and the wires cleans out the pits.
Sanding disk only cut form the top down, thus you need to remove metal to remove rust.
