    Thanks. Your videos are always clear, concise & very helpful. And you don't gabble on for ages, unlike some other people do, but get straight to the necessary info.

    I just wanted to thank you for all of your videos. It is so nice to know, if I don't understand something in knitting, I can come here and get a quick video that makes it very clear. I have become a fairly confident knitter because of your videos - I subscribed when I first decided to teach myself to knit, and you haven't let me down yet!

    A hat pattern is using p2tog as a left-leaning decrease as seen from the right side for shaping a cap brim. I found the tidiest way to retain the leaning stitches is, on the purl side, slip the first as if to knit and replace onto left needle (reorienting) then purl through back loop of two stitches. I am happy with this outcome. Thank you so much for all your wonderful ideas and videos - you are my "go-to girl" for knitting stitches.

    I prefer the look of working it this way, but there are a few different ways of working it - really just a personal preference.

    This is wrong. If you don’t purl through the back loop, your stitch will be twisted.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 роки тому +1

      No, what I show here is correct. The pattern would specify "ssp tbl" if that is the stitch you need.

    • @holykrip
      @holykrip 4 роки тому +7

      @@verypinkknits that has *not* been my experience. just like SSK isn't "slip slip, return to left needle and K2tog" (it's K2tog tbl), patterns use SSP to mean slip slip P2tog tbl. the stitch doesn't lean the right direction otherwise.

    • @carl_cogito

      my pattern didn’t specify. i did it the way this video shows and the neckline on one side of my sweater is extremely crooked.

      I also have learned that an ssp is supposed to be purled through the back loops. However I came up with a way to avoid that. If you change the order of the two stitches as if you were wanting to make a 1-1 left cross, THEN you can purl them together in the normal way. No need to slip as if to knit onto the right-hand needle.

    I used this method for a neckline knitted flat (a v neck) and the ssp done this way did not look the same as the ssk, something to think about before starting the decreases if you want both sides of your neckline to look alike and neat.

    • @holykrip
      @holykrip 4 роки тому +8

      my guess is that it would have looked ok if you'd purled through the back loops. i just finished a project with SSP and that was my experience. check out other people's videos on SSP.

      I am knitting a cardigan which utilizes SSK and SSP decreases. The designer included her video on how to do SSP. My stitches looked vastly different from the opposite side SSK. My knitting teacher told me I was "doing it wrong", and showed me how to finish by purling through the back loops, which was a perfect mirror to the SSK. So I checked here (my go to) and found the same instruction as the sweater designer! Several other SSP videos show the 'through the back' , which is how the stitch works best for my project.

    I've seen others do it different buy going up into the back of the two sts and then purling. Why do you do it this way?

    Well shoot, now I don't know which is correct. I just watched a video stating you purl them through the back loop not a normal purl both together. So slip 1 kw, slip 1 kw, move them to left needle and purl both through the back loop (the hard way, turning it.)
    Then she had an easy ssp. That I can't explain. But I'll post the link so you can see it.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  3 роки тому +2

      UA-cam won't let you post a link, so it's okay, you don't have to. Let me tell you this - if you've found another way to decrease that you're happy with, either is fine. There are no knitting police. In the video, I demonstrate the way I do it.

    • @tlneill
      @tlneill 3 роки тому

      @@verypinkknits okay, as long as it looks the same, I'm assuming, with the left lean. And yours is so much easier than both I saw! I figured I probably shouldn't post a link anyway 😉 etiquette 🙂 Thanks for responding so quickly.

    • @dharmabum1111
      @dharmabum1111 3 роки тому

      @@tlneill I'm figuring this out too! And for where I'm using it, on a front v-neck the two methods result in a much different look. My preference, to match the other side is to purl the 2 slipped stitched through the back.

  • @krclinton
    @krclinton 9 років тому +12

    Other demostrators show ssp as purling through the back of the slipped stitches. But you purl them directly. Which looks better?

    • @yesterdaysjam8464
      @yesterdaysjam8464 5 років тому +9

      i actually think it SHOULD be the back loops purled because doing it the other way produces a RIGHT leaning decrease on the back, and if you needed a left one, you won't get it by purling though the front

    • @shellydicks-OR
      @shellydicks-OR 5 років тому +8

      This stitch should be purled through the back loops. Doing it otherwise causes the stitch to be twisted.

    • @holykrip
      @holykrip 4 роки тому +7

      in my experience, patterns use SSP to mean "slip, slip, return to left needle and purl through the *back loops*." yes, technically you could tell the designers to say 'SSPtbl' but they don't. just like "SSK" is knit 2 tog through the back loops and no one tells them it should be abbreviated "SSKtbl". i just finished a sweater with some lace trim using SSP and most definitely it needed to be purled through the back loops to lean in the correct direction on the front side. i love most of stacy's videos but this video should be redone because it's misleading.

    Thank you for your instruction video's. Momentarily I am making the log cabin blanket with your explanation which was very clear. About the SSp i have a question. Some pearl the stichtes the normal way, other instructionvideo's show the pearling from the back to the front. (Excuse for my bad english). Does it make a differente in the endresult?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  10 років тому +3

      Yes - purling the stitch through the back loop would make a difference in the stitch, but such a teeny difference that it probably isn't worth the effort. You can work this stitch both ways, right next to each other, and see if you prefer the look of one way over the other, to be sure.

    I'm using your ssp stitch in my Celia luxe cocoon cardigan which is a lace pattern. I've encountered problems maintaining the pattern. I've broken down the pattern into 12 stitches and count each stitch. But I still can't maintain the pattern. Any suggestion.

      Imelda Netsel - I suggest emailing the pattern designer (Ravelry message is a good way to reach most designers). Chances are she has had this question before!
