The good news is this will be so much easier with a sharp chain! As others have noted, you’ll get chips rather than dust and it’ll cut like magic. Definitely a job to commit to and see it through, as there’s no backing out once you’ve started 😊

Definitely get some protective wear as others have suggested Meg. You will believe how fast that saw can kick and attempt to remove one of your limbs. Still the determined learner as always though. Keep up the great work. Since that chain was over heated I would suggest to just replace it too.

Thank you Jeremy! I was definitely nervous using the chainsaw but after watching Mike and many of my friends use them on all our camp trips with ease, I figured it was time to learn lol! I will definitely be replacing that chain and will keep practicing when the opportunity arises. 😊

Meg, I just found your channel on the one using John Deere cutting the field. For beginners, I always recommend use a can of spray paint to mark where your cuts should be. Then make your horizontal cut FIRST. This gives you a better visual of the point you want your angle cut to meet it. Then do your back cut. It is extremely dangerous to use the top side of the bar to make any cuts. Consider the force due to rotation. When cutting with the bottom of the bar the saw tends to pull away from you. When cutting with the top it tends to come back at you. The chain brake is designed for cutting with the bottom of the bar, as if the saw binds up, your hand will pretty much automatically hit the brake. You had the right plan, just a bit weak on the application. But you go girl, you got it done.

Okay, I'd be lying if I didn't say I wasn't really nervous watching this. Tree falling is no joke and really something you shouldn't do while alone because there are so many things that can go south in a heartbeat. It's not that we don't have faith in your abilities, we do and you've shown it time and time again. Aw thank you Rob! There are definitely things I wish I had done better on this one - a sharper chain being one of them, and really figuring out my approach to that hinge cut before cutting... much more practice needed no doubt! Mike was actually doing work inside the trailer while I was doing this project in case anything serious did happen, but thankfully everything was all good. Thanks for looking out and for the support! I hope you're having a great start to your week!

I was kind of cringing watching this. Your chain was way too dull hence the smoke from burning the wood. This overheated and streched the chain. Chain was way too lose on that second tree which is why it came off. You should be getting chips not dust coming off the chain when cutting. That is a good way to judge the need for sharpening. A dull chain makes an already dangerous task even more dangerous. Stay safe!

And most places that sell chain also resharpen your dull chain. Have 4 chains. 2 sharp to use, 2 at the sharpener, rotation.
But you just cut down the last dead trees on your lot so I guess you won't need the chainsaw much anymore. Your on a great adventure. Don't get killed and stay out of the emergency room. 🪓💥🔥👍.

When you cut a tree keep your left arm straight and taut. That way you have control of the saw if it kicks back. If you are cutting logs on the ground with a wimp left arm and saw kicks back it will hit you in the head. Stiff arm and you miss your noggin.

Continuously changing the angle , moving the whole saw, speeds up the cut. A flat chain into the cut gets really slow. I make a mark around my cut with the blade first than then continue to follow it. But, those dull teeth really make it tough, especially with dry old dead wood.

Of course, everyone is saying too loose, at 17:32 (see how loose it is ?) . they come off because they are too loose. Its really hard on the chain. They typically have to be set up again with a grinder as they get bends ect that need to be fixed quite often after they fly off like that. . Got to be right. If Mike is up on this, a little training session would be really good. But, first rule, check chain every 10 cuts and re tighten . Especially with new chains. There is a ton more but hopefully mike brings you up on some of this stuff. That chain saw tool should be stuck in your back pocket. Best of luck from a new subscriber. I commend you for taking this on, but, taking down trees is seriously dangerous , wind, and other things make it that way.

I’ve worked for arborist company 2 years ago now. I’ve learned that never ever use a very dull chain which you’d have to fight with the saw more and can easily get injured. However falling a tree sometimes can be tricky depending on the situation. But for next time I’d 100% buy a new one just for the safety for your self plus making the saw not have to fight more than it should. But overall I’d say you’ve done pretty well knowing what to do. 👌🏼

Dead trees are the most dangerous trees to fell. The wood has lost its plyability, so the hinge is not very strong and frequently will just sheer off. You can practice making cuts on the high stumps you still have left standing. Great videos!

  • @verdonix1976
    @verdonix1976 3 місяці тому +2

Ok, so I know this is a 4 week old video... and I am sure folks have already said this all... but in case someone missed it or you did... couple of things!
    1. Good job stepping out of your comfort zone to learn a new thing!!
    2. Chainsaws never give you a second chance, so always respect them.. but do not operate with fear.
    3. A dull chain is one of the most dangerous things you can have with a chainsaw.
    4. When you take the bar cover off to re-install the chain, the 2 cover nuts do not have to be as tight as you made them, (an "ugga" more than snug)... Also, before you tighten it, you need to tension the chain with the tension screw (which is parallel with the bar, right along side it, just under the cover... you tension the chain with the cover partially on and then tighten the cover nuts.... rule of thumb, chain should be seated "in" the bar all the way around with you being able to pull it down like 1/3" or so and it snaps back.... (too loose a chain being a very dangerous aspect of chainsaws)
    5. NEVER run out of bar oil... you will tear a bar up FAST with no oil.
    6. You can FOR SURE sharpen your own chain for cheap.. the kit is like $25 and there are tons of UA-cam videos
    7. Your little tree was cut in an "ok" spot... I sometimes cut that high to save my back all day... your issue was you needed to cut the big tree first because the limbs from the large tree bound up the little tree as it was very light .... so when it could not fall with the birds mouth, it got held up until the wind pushed it sideways.
I am a fan of your channel and I am enjoying watching your adventures!! Keep it up....
** you do give me fits because sometimes I want to help you through the screen, but I also understand the feeling and need to learn for yourself!!! Kick Butt!!
*** I know there are folks that like to run a "slack" chain... so for #4 I may take some heat from the audience.... I don't like a sloppy chain... just the way I was taught is how I typed it out to you and I grew up running Stihls and Huskys and I started on an old iron McCulloch putting up 10cord a year to burn... just my best practice to you, not meant to ruffle feathers. There is WAAAAYYYYY to much nuance to cutting trees with a chainsaw than I have time to type out here... you just need to do what you are doing and get out and do it.

You're a real shaker, shaky shaky baby.. 😁 Oh, dammit! That chain is a mess, sharp as a dinner plate... It even smokes!😒 You need to do something about it. Sharp tools are less dangerous than dullies. Aiaiai.., you messed up the hinge..😮 You need to have handy a wedge and a hammer when falling trees, things might go wrong instantly...and take account for the wind. You don't need to engage the brake every time and whenever filling fuel, fill oil too, or you will forget, the chain will run dry and gum up.. Yey, wasn't it easy? 😏
Work in progress, Meg, I still admire your adventure-sness in the projects just like that, with no experience, but you have to begin somewhere. Keep on and stay safe, I bet though a lot of people wants to see more.. I can't wait. 😁 Cheers!

Well great uploading of your videos. Certainly enjoying them. You’re getting a load of advice but I also have one for you . Buy 6 super chisels chainsaw chains and always top off your fuel and oil at the same time and also grease the tip of the chainsaw blade. As your sawing the chainsaw needs to struggle and not running at full blast and you need to see the chips coming out as your cutting. Large chip (awesome) small dust (bad). Smoke= more money out the door.

the chain stretches as it gets hotter so may need to be adjusted throughout the day. Also the sharpness is judged by the size of the chips. The teeth a commonly referred to as chisels the bigger the chips the better your chain is. If you are making sawdust you are really dull. You can file the chain a few times with the proper sized file or I use a dremmel tool. Some people file the deapth guages, I just replace the chain after several sharpenings.

Same thing everyone is saying. You were lucky. There is one time when you use the top of the bar, when cutting a log lying on its limbs. You can make an up cut from underneath to cut down to from above. This can be quite tricky though because the trunk on either side can cause the chain to bind and kickback. So stand to the side of the cut when sawing down on a horizontal log. I think you are under special protection from the universe, but girl, you got gumption!

Aside from the unnecessary excess heat from cutting with the dull chain, you should never Rev the engine when the brake is on. The centrifugal clutch will be trying to engage, but the brake will be holding the sprocket from spinning; essentially burning up the clutch. It would be similar to easing off the clutch in your car, while holding the brakes, except the clutch in the chainsaw isn't as forgiving. I always have 3 chains at any given time. One on the saw, and at least one sharp chain in reserve. In the long run, it's much cheaper than the damage you can cause from running a dull chain.

Meg the third tree was good. In the cutting - there’s a line on housing of the chainsaw called the “gun sights” google how to use those. They’ll help you aim. The cuts looked good. Start with the undercut using the gun sights and the bottom of the bar. Then the sloping cut. Be sure the corners match up and are clean or you can have a dutchman which is very dangerous. Once you get the face cuts in I wouldn’t walk I’m front of or dilly dally around without watching that tree. For the back cut use the gun sights again - aim and go straight in using the bottom of the bar. Generally, 2” of holding wood, 2” of stumpshot. Face cut a little more than a third of the diameter back cut a little more than a third of the diameter and holding wood rest. I teach forest firefighters how to cut trees..the last one was pretty good. Without the back hoe wedges are a good safety tool. Get one of those into the back cut as soon as viable and you won’t pinch your bar if one ever sits back. When you have a face cut in and start the back cut it’s time to be situationally aware that that tree could fall. Also, I would highly recommend chaps gloves and boots at a minimum. Chainsaw cuts are very nasty.

I know you are trying a lot of new stuff out, even when it scares the hell out of you. With this one I was a bit worried because normally, at least over here in the NL, tree falling is done by two or more people in case something goes not the way it should. As others have pointed out the chain saw was very dull which made this job more challenging. At the end … job done! On to the next one! Be careful!

I am retired forest ranger and I can see.
Chain is so dull, do not spare on chain bar oil. For reason any chainsaw is made and preset in factory with good reason, you can run out gas, but must stay something chainbar oil.
Minimum personal protection equipment need when work with chain saw.
Gloves, helmet , specially in case when falling dead tree.
Eyes and ear protection too before make first cut.
And do not wory practice, practice and practice.
Face cut, must be between ¼ to maximum ⅓ diameter of tree. Dont go to deep. You loose control if you going too deep.

Before you use the chain saw again please replace the saw chain or get it sharpened ! The chainsaw will spit out small chunk's of of wood in a constant flow when it is cutting correctly . A new chain is not to much or you could order a jig to sharpen the cutting teeth , That way you can extend the life of the chain . Cutting with a dull chain is very dangerous and the cut takes much longer . schmedly

The chain was too lose....the cutter teeth are really dull....half full of oil is NOT ENOUGH.... Always fill the oil and fuel together, that keeps you safe. About the cuts.....i always make the horizontal cut first because it seems easiest for me. Have seen so many people do the cuts so many different ways. Does not seem to matter as long as you end up with a good notch and don't cut through your hinge when you make the back cut. You seem to always set your chainsaw down where the tree might hit it. Definitely something to think about and avoid. It is really easy to sharpen the chain and those teeth still have tons of life left in them. Stihl makes a nice new type of sharpener that takes most of the guesswork out of chainsaw sharpening. Just have to order the one that is right for your chain.
