Enjoyable and informative. As an aside, the old player system was called "Duo Art" rather than "Art Duo." It was (and is) a pneumatic system. I have a beautiful mahogany 1929 Steinway Duo Art Model M and 300 rolls for it and it still plays beautifully, post a 1990s restoration.
Oh wow! Having the actual Rachmaninoff himself, playing on your piano. What amazing technology. Have they ever had a full-blown concert with an orchestra accompaniment, using this technology?
I will not go into too much detail here, but the Spirio is based on hardware and software developed by Wayne Stahnke. His work on this began in 1973 and he licensed an earlier version to Bösendorfer in 1984, which is probably where the 'Austrian' engineer idea came from. Stahnke is an American with a love for the piano and a background in aerospace engineering. In 2014 Steinway purchased the entire system from Stahnke, who will celebrate his 81st birthday later this year. Spirio today continues to be developed by an in house technology team of engineers. Disclaimer: I am a Spirio-r technician.
It would be great for Bösendorfer to have a sophisticated self playing system like Spirio as well. Same for C.Bechstein….they are both EXCELLENT manufacturers- at least on par with Steinway.
Thank you for your interest! I'm only a piano teacher, and Steinway Artist promoter, organizing their Masterclass Concert Events at Steinway Gallery locations ☺️. This research I found and tried to remember- "In 2015, Steinway went back to the player piano industry from around the 1920s by introducing a digital player piano series called Spirio. The technology in the Spirio pianos was created in 2007 by Wayne Stahnke, an Austrian engineer who has previously made digital player piano systems for other piano companies, like Yamaha and Bösendorfer. Wayne Stahnke's technology, originally called Live Performance Model LX, was sold to Steinway in 2014 and re-branded as Spirio."
Model B is the 'Queen", and the model D is the 'King'.
They both sound beautiful.
Great job and thank you for this comprehensive tour.
