Interesting documentation about the Steinway Pianos. I am a son of Hamburg and always proud about this legendary manufactury out the in Bahrenfeld. But never came the idea to me, that it was founded after the family had crossed the ocean.
It is wonderful to see, how much passion everbody puts into the building of a new Grand Piano. Ah, lets call it a Flügel :-)

This excellent 24 minute documentary film chronicles the history of Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (later Henry E Steinway), who was originally from Seesen, Germany. It covers the formation and history of Steinway & Sons and looks at the company today, with a focus on the Hamburg factory.

More like Mercedes, much more commonly found than Rolls. But Steinway doesn't have the competition Mercedes has, like BMW. Yamaha may be something like that but not in the concert piano realm. Yamaha's big presence is in every other style of music and some Classical (but growing in Classical).

The best Steinway I've played is located at the Royal Music school of Brussels. It is a Steinway D from the 70's I would say.
This piano is amazing, very powerful with rumbling bass, singing medium and crystalline trebles.
I wish all Steinway could be that good.
At this time, the piano was located in the first classroom just in front the main stairs.

The best Steinway D I played sits in a private house in Bangkok. Shura Sherkasky, Peter Donahue and many other great pianists confirmed my opninion.
I have always loved the piano. And watching Tiffany Poon and Steinway videos makes me want to see their factory. I so want one...they are beautiful and the sounds. Love them.

I have the privilege of owning a Hamburg Steinway & Sons model D Concert grand Piano. I was only able to own it because I bought it used from an older Gentleman who had it manufactured for him at the Hamburg Factory in 1967. The piano is in Original Mint Condition, he did his practicing on an upright Stenway, so this beauty is like new. I have played many other Concert grands and Like my Idol Arthur Rubinstein always said " A Steinway is a Steinway and there is Nothing like it in the World "
I liked the comment about "the preservation of Steinways craftsmanship". It is passed down through generations at the Steinway factories.

2013 / 0:34 the Hamburg Elbphilharmonic was still under construction in the background. It was completed in 2017 and Steinways are already playing in there! :)

The difference between a Steinway piano and a machine made piano, is that a Steinway has a soul (so to speak). When the soul of a Steinway piano matches you, the artwork does not need to be forced, it flows out of the instrument, so very beautifully. You really don't know what it's like until you have actually tried a Steinway.
Well said. I used to sell them and once the customer found that special piano it was a very easy sell. But the search can take awhile, often months. I totally get this as a pianist myself for 43 years for the instrument has to speak to you and if it doesn't you could be the best salesperson in the world and you would be wasting your time. They do indeed have souls and personalities. Wonderful piano.
My old piano teacher had one, its amazing to play, you can't really go back to playing regular pianos in the same way. My dream is to be able to afford one one day
Just sampled 5 new Bosendorfer full concert grands yesterday, and though the price tag is insane (the highest price was $400,000) I couldn't find a single one that I'd prefer to a Steinway. The sound and projection style is so different, and there is just no comparison. I recognize this is an opinion, and they are both wonderful...but there is wonderful and then there is WUNDERBAR.

Absolutely beautiful works of art are these pianos. I dream about owning one or even playing one someday.
Where a great pianist is about to play a solo concert on the piano, a Steinway Grand Piano will be able to express the musician's skill on the piano.
Steinways are found almost everywhere including Moscow's House of Music where great pianists have played the piano including Elisey Mysin who is at one with the piano.

I prefer a Hamberg Steinway over a New York Steinway there is something about the craftsmanship on the Hamberg that makes it perform better

Yes, the New York is usually considered to be inferior than the Hamburg in terms of craftsmanship and materials used; however, I find the New York sound much more appealing to me. The sound is so characteristic and unique.
GyromiteROB This is due to several factors which aren't commonly known. The Astoria plant is using old templates, patterns, and machinery whose registration marks, alignment, and other critical placement details has become worn and inconsistent over many decades of production use. Hamburg was, in some sense, fortunate to have had a fire, I believe in the 1950's that forced completely new tooling and patterning allowing the Hamburg instruments to be better and more meticulously made. As for voicing NY and Hamburg Steinways use completely different hammers. NY are soft requiring voicing up (hardening) and Hamburgs are harder hammers often requiring voicing down. It's not unusual for European instruments to be brighter in tone.
The New York tone is less consistent BUT more Unique. There are certain tonal shades you can’t do on a Hamburg but you’ll be surprised that you can Achieve on a New York ;)

4:15 my aunt had one of those "square grands" for years. it sounded as bad as the one in this video and no piano technician would touch it. I don't know if they couldn't get parts or what.

Interesting. I watched for a few minutes...but no mention of Grotrian ...The piano was named Grotrian Steinweg and only when Henrich Steinweg went to America he was told to change his name to Henry Steinway. Later they didn't want to be associated with Grotrian and there was a case filed..( I read all that on the net ) and Steinway won and so the name Grotrian Steinweg can only be used in Europe....
It's the piano we've heard on 1000s of recordings and concerts .It's a beautiful sound ( though not all Steinways are good because of the wood)
Today Faizioli is being heard and also Yamaha and Shigeru Kawai ( these still have to reach ....)
Other good brands are Seiler, August Forster, C Bechstein, Bluthner, Steingraeber, Sauter, Ant Petrof , Bosendorfer.
Slightly lesser is Schimmdsel Estonia Wilhem Steinberg and a few others.

Considering the price, it's a shame Steinway pianos aren't prepared better at the factory. Playing a brand new Steinway is like driving a truck until you spend another couple thousand dollars having it regulated and voiced. The dealers do as little as they can get away with.

Sorry Steinway, your pianos are great but this documentary is not much more than a long advertisement. PBS's "Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037" is a much better, more insightful and engaging documentary.

@Patrick Digny - First of all, it is not a song. A song as a composition with lyrics to be sung by a singer. When there are no lyrics being song then it is simply a piano piece. I do not know the name of this particular piece at 12 minutes.
@@JD-qd5zp Dear JD - thank you for clarifying that a song usually! has words :D I have been playing the piano for over 30 years, so I am aware of that. Nevertheless songs don't neccessarily! have to have words, just look at Felix Mendelssohn's "Lieder ohne Worte" or "Songs withouth words" which are piano songs.

still can't believe they stack wood like that... it'll crush the grain at the lowest layer. instead, they could just invest in a system to stack wood on a shelf just the same, but without crushing the grain. there are many things i can see them changing and improving on. for instance, after the frame is formed, they let it sit under it's own tension. supports, tension standards. lots of ways to improve on that method and to understand the difference from the best to the worst opportunities of the wood.
There really is nothing like a Steinway piano. The simply are the best.

In this computer age, where elaborate computer simulations could be done on both materials and acoustics, finer sounding and more durable instruments could be mass manufactured resulting to cheaper products...The nightmare of the so called "artisans" and "craftsmen"
They all do it. Kawai makes their slow hand-built pianos (Shigeru Kawai), Yamaha, Petrof, Bosendorfer, Bechstein, etc. If you see their factory videos of how they build their premium pianos, they all look quite similar. I kind of agree with you. I don't see the need to make everything by hand on the highest level pianos. Some of it, sure, but not the whole piano. They just do it to say we make hand built pianos because they can say they are the best built ones. But are they? The materials and aging of the wood is the most important thing, not that someone puts the wire on the piano by hand.
My piano, which I am currently restoring, is nearly as old as the oldest steinway, 1878 :o) It's an erberhardt :o) (it's on my channel ) :o)

As exclusive and expensive as these pianos may be, the highest notes (the last one/one and a half octave) sound way too harsh. Too metallic.
Other brands have managed to get rid of that harsh sound. Why does a Steinway has to sound so different, then...???

I wonder if yamaha take as much care and attention to detail when they built my piano. Err nope! Talk about Vorsprung durch Technik. Extreme. You really do get what you pay for.
Yes, as much if not more. Yamaha has a hand-built division that makes the CF line and S and SX line in their own separate factory away from the mass-produced Yamahas.
Wait a second, Beethoven, Schumann, Wagner or Bach never played or owned a Steinway. Their compositional inspiration was made possible by Erard, Streichers, Pleyel. Some Steinways can be great instruments, I personally own a Model L from the golden age, 1927, but it is an exquisite out-layer compared to the cheaply made Steinways of the CBS era, 1960s. It actually gets worse when in comes to that teflon era, and the verdigris period. The great fore-mentioned German musicians are the best, timelessly, Steinway pianos are not.

Steinway makes wonderful pianos. But this film is tarnished by its advertising industry rhetoric. Who knew they could pile manure that high without the underlying facts being crushed? As to "Steinway Musicians," it is as much a tyranny as a guild. To support all those performing musicians with concert pianos is likely the cost that makes a concert Steinway sell for almost twice the price of a comparable size concert Fazioli or a Bosendorfer, or a Bechstein.
Steinway pianos shine brightly in the concert world. This film offers exaggerations that dim that brilliance.
Oh, and Hamburg probably isn't even the musical capital of Germany, let alone Europe, much less "the world."
Hey - What are you talking about. The King of Instruments is the pipe organ with far more dynamic range, ptich and tonal quality that any bunch of pianos no matter who makes them. You have not mentioned all the problems with action, regulation and touch that American piano purchasers experience. Restrictions on where you can buy pianos, all sorts of restrictions including that you must buy pianos sight unseen. Steinway used to be the best but now????
@robert shaw - you can’t pour your heart and soul and mind and emotions into a pipe organ as you can on the piano. All you can do with a pipe organ espresso K and cause air to blow through a pipe. There is no way to put emotion into it.

@@JD-qd5zp I would guess you have nevr played a pipe organ. I wonder why the pipe organ is called "The King of Instruments" by one eminent composer... All you can do is make them louder or softer, and play from the softest whisper to the loudest blaring of trumpets. From the lowest audible pitches to frequencies only cats can hear. Pianos have their place, But the pipe organ is and remains king. For example - try playing Pictures at an exhibition of piano and then let a good organist play it on a 100 stop organ. - No comparison.
@@JD-qd5zp Oh, that's okay JD - we all make mistakes, like saying all you do is press a key. and using 5 keyboards at once and selecting the tonal resources appropriate for the piece and sections thereof and controlling the volume and maybe a moment to turn pages. Of course the pianist does not play a keyboard with his feet, does he - 32 notes for the bass lines. and at least 122 manual keys. - 244 if it is a 4 manual organ. Now, what is it you were saying??? Play an organ, just once - with help from someone who knows what he's doing, and you will have a wonderful time, really. You might even be able to manage the pedal. and that is even more exciting. Really - have fun - try it.

NY Steinway is the worst Piano to tune , Hamburg is one of the BEST ! NY Steinway is like a Percussion Instrument . but expensive . different Culture , different Needs . Marketing , versus Music
