6 days bikepacking across Denmark with our dog: Denmarks wild side

- Follow along as we cycle coast to coast on a bikepacking journey across Denmark in search of Denmarks wild side with our Jack Russell terrier, Banjo the adventure puppy.
Now, you might wonder, why leave the forests and mountains of Norway behind to ride bikes in Denmark? A whopping sixty percent of Denmark is made up of farmland. Only a minuscule 13 percent of Denmark is covered by forest. In other words: You don’t travel to Denmark to experience vast wilderness.
But there is something else about the Denmark. A different sort of wild. Consisting of Jutland and a whole bunch of islands, Denmark have a remarkably high coastline to mainland ratio. In other words: Denmark is a coastal land. Denmarks wild side is the coast.
The question, though, is where do you camp close to the coast in Denmark? Camping on the beach with a tent isn’t allowed. The solution? The few small designated areas where camping is allowed, often with wooden lean-to’s big enough to swallow a small tent. It might not be epic wilderness, but it sure has a charm of its own.

Beautifully done; both the actual tour and the video. I am a mountain junkie when it comes to bike packing/touring but at 72 years old I can see the potential pleasure of Denmark and may head up that way after the summer tourist season is done. Many thanks for sharing this.
Glad you liked it! 😊 I have a soft spot for mountains myself, but have to admit that it’s usually a bit more relaxing riding in Denmark than the mountains of Norway. I do miss having the possibility of putting up my tent anywhere I want like we can in Norway. Happy riding!

I recommend checking ridewithgps.com to search for bicycle routes in Denmark. The page udinaturen.dk is great for finding places to camp. The possibilities to make your own routes are almost endless 😊

I discovered your trip through the "Carradice" bag that caught my attention. I travel, but with more sun, I live in Spain. I wanted to ask for information, the straight handlebar of one of the bikes, (N) is it Nitto? If it is Nitto or another model, please tell me the size and setback in degrees. Another request, I have tried to carry the Carradice bag and some small panniers in front like you do, and I just don't feel comfortable with the handlebar heavily loaded with weight, how do you feel "riding" with so much weight in front? I appreciate your response.
The handlebars are the 750mm version of the Nitto for Shred bars. You can read more about them here: global.bluelug.com/nitto-for-shred-bar-silver.html 😊 Before I mounted them on the bike I used to have Nitto dirt drop bars on the bike, but they didn’t provide enough leverage to muscle big panniers and the Carradice bag in the front and Banjo in the rear. The wide Nitto for Shred bars solved that. Absolutely recommend them in the wide version if you want to carry a lot in the front. You might know this, but it’s crucial that the front panniers are placed in a way (fore or aft) that minimizes the effect on the steering. Too far in front of the fork (or behind) will have a big impact on how the panniers affects the steering. The narrower the handlebar, the more pronounced the effect is.

I really don't get it. The predominant wind here in DK is West to North West. Wind from the East is rare, if it is in the winter it will get very cold, in summer very hot.
You should have had tailwind towards Aarhus. I live right out towards an eastern coast, I can't remember such a period with eastern wind last year.

Edit: Try the West coast of Denmark. If you have the time, you can extend your tour to the German coast too. In the cycling season, you will meet many other cyclists in the shelter camps. A good place to exchange tips and tricks.
This was back in 2021, not 2023, and I agree, we felt a bit out of luck with the wind compared to what we usually encounter (I think we have cycled across Denmark six or seven times). I believe I mention that it was in 2021 in the very beginning of the movie, but I can understand your confusion if you thought it was 2023 😊 We haven’t been further west than Løgstør yet as these trips also function as a transport to Copenhagen to visit family and we are often a bit limited on time in spring or autumn. The west coast sure is tempting, though. I have been winter bikepacking a few times along the west coast between Slettestrand, Løkken and Skagen. Good times.

I saw that you use Lumafusion to edit. May I ask which unit you use to edit it on? an ipad? How does that work for you? I have been thinking about doing the same while I start traveling later this year.

Hi Simon. All the movies on the channel has been edited in Lumafusion on an iPad Pro 13.2 inch 2020 model. Just to give some background: I started playing round with video editing around 2010, learning basic skills in Sony Vegas. In 2013, I transitioned to Mac and FCPX, but I think I can count on one hand the number of movies I’ve edited in FCPX. The editing itself was fine, but as I only occasionally edited movies, I disliked how the data had to be organized in libraries, events and projects. That’s obviously great for pro use, but made things cumbersome for me. Lumafusion seemed to have the features I needed the most, and I really, really like the recent version. I guess the only feature I miss is the ability to play with colour curves to create my own funky LUTs and presets in the app. At the same time I switched to Lumafusion, I also began using the iPad as my main work tool. It’s not for everyone, but for me, the positives outweigh the downsides. As a newb, I tended to go for pro solutions, but nowadays, I enjoy keeping things simple and focus on what I find fun. For me, that’s storytelling, not technical perfection. Best regards, Mikkel

I’m not sure about what facts you are thinking about, I can’t honestly remember much except something about otters around Aalborg, but I’m half Danish and tend do grab the occasional fact or stuff I find interesting on the interwebs or from other sources as I roll along through life 😄

Cool, glad you liked it! 😊🙏 I rarely share my routes on a one to one basis for a number of reasons, one being time constraints 😊 That being said, if you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to check out ridewithgps.com and udinaturen.dk. These are really great resources to create a bunch of different route alternatives from. I can spend hours researching these resources while dreaming up new trips and routes 😄
I’ve been watching and sharing your videos with friends and family. The editing, your choice of music and narrative are all wonderful. As others have noted, calming and peaceful. I’d also add inspiring. I also tour with my bicycle, but so far only overnight trips lasting two days. Your videos have me thinking about longer trips.

That "thin sliver of grass between the bike path and road" is a WHOLE lot more than you'll get in the USA. And it will be massive Ford F250s pick up trucks passing you at 50 mph. Norway really looks fabulous in comparison to Denmark, but maybe gets old if it's your home? The eastern side of the USA does have lots of removed rail trail too, similar to what you're showing in Denmark. Thanks for sharing.
I’m half danish so have been riding across Denmark quite a few times to visit family. Riding in Norway is a different beast compared to Denmark. In many places the roads are narrow, twisting and steep and often with a minuscule road shoulder or none, so I’m all too familiar with riding on nerve racking roads. I guess Denmark is great for its bike friendliness and long beaches while Norway has its vast forests and mountains. I’ll have them both if I can 😄
@@BackwoodsBikepacking You know, my name is Eric (not sailing). Like most Americans, I have no idea where I come from. I know one grandfather was French at least by sir name and my teeth have cusps unique to native Americans (Indians), but other than that...? I've always felt this strange connection to Norway and sailing. Something about the Vikings just seems right, especially a longboat. Anyhow in my opinion Norway is a landscape of fantastic beauty, rugged and cold so harsh as to be lethal, a unique place and gem.

Wonderful video! Do you have any tips on how to find tent sites in Denmark?
Thanks, glad you liked it! I recommend using the danish official homepage udinaturen.dk. Click on "FIND FACILITETER PÅ KORT" in the upper right corner, then navigate down to the menu item "UDVALGTE" and scroll to "sov under stjernerne" (it translates into "sleep under the stars"). The different types of sites are marked on the map. Some sites need to be booked in advance. Forest areas marked with blue are areas where you are free to pitch your tent more or less wherever you like for a maximum of, if I remember correctly, two nights.
@@BackwoodsBikepacking Even if the shelter itself is booked you're still free to set up your tent and use the rest of the facilities.

@@BackwoodsBikepacking If it's a public shelter the booking only covers the shelter and the description will say if you're not allowed to pitch a tent there. There are also privately owned shelters that you can book and they operate on their own rules
