‘Preemptive Listening’ is an evening of sound experiments and expanded performances that took place at Likeminds on Saturday 16 October 2022. The programme revolved around Aura Satz’s feature film-in-the-making, ‘Preemptive Listening’, that reimagines emergency sirens in the age of manmade and ecological disasters.
A chapter of the forthcoming Satz’s film, ‘The Future Waters of the Storm Surge' is a short film commissioned by Sonic Acts. Made in collaboration with field recordist and electronic music composer BJ Nilsen, it explores a wall of sirens framed within a storm surge barrier - the Oosterscheldekering dam in the Netherlands. Measuring nearly eight kilometres in length, Oosterscheldekering is both a barrier designed to protect from North Sea flooding and a bridge that connects the Zeeland islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland. Embedded within the preventive architecture, the siren is an integral part of a complex web of infrastructures preempting the turbulence of future threats. The siren sound draws an invisible line across an unstable horizon, speaking to the centrifugal chaos of storms to come.
The sound artists performing that night - Sarah Davachi, accompanied by the contemporary, experimental music collective Nemø Ensemble, Debit and Mazen Kerbaj - all collaborated with Aura Satz in imagining new sounds for emergencies, signalling the disasters to come in times of climate catastrophe.
Sonic Acts Biennial 2022 took place at various locations in Amsterdam from 30 September to 23 October, interweaving an exhibition, sound performances and discourse programme, accompanied by artist presentations, workshops, excursions and more. The Leaving Traces weekend programme brought together international artists and thinkers for talks, presentations and workshops throughout the day, while the evenings featured performances, concerts and films by a lineup of exciting and pioneering sound artists.
