Poe was actually never addicted to alcohol. He was actually allergic to it. A person who Poe wrote a bad review about was the person who came up with that. They didn’t it to make him look bad after his death.
Poe married his cousin in order for her to recieve medical treatments through his military benefits if i recall. I did a paper on him back in middle school and i believe thats what the stated reasoning was.
Her family had also already become stricken by poverty. This was to help her with medical treatment AND to stop her from ending up homeless. This is why he calls King out on never living through misery, poverty, or family woes. King has lived a privileged life, he was well off even before he started writing, yet he writes about other people going through hard lives. Poe's poems and writings come from a place of authenticity, which is what made them so powerful. He's calling King a fraud, basically.
His aunt asked him to marry her daughter because she wanted her to have a comfortable life with a man that adored her and treated her well. His cousin was always sickly and he didn’t want her to be abused by a man who just wanted a bunch of kids. Poe was terrified that his cousin would die in childbirth because she was so weak. Some historians believe they never even consummated their marriage.
@@ericmanget4280 You have to understand the kind of world Poe grew up in. Women were property back then. Men wanted sons for many reasons and during times of hardships, families would kill or abandon the elderly and sell off/abandon their daughters to either make money or save resources. His cousin was sick, and a female. They probably couldn't sell her because she was sick. They most likely couldn't afford her medical treatments, so she was simply a drain on resources. In short, they would've either abandoned her or had her killed. In today's society there are resources for people like that, places to go. Back then? Not a chance.
Keith Davis also marrying your cousin wasn’t as much of a faux pa back then. The age thing I don’t think was and issue in that time period either. Different times, different values I suppose.
Poe MARRIED his 13-year-old cousin Virginia -- remember, this was the 1830s, and it wasn't seen in quite as bad a light as it is today. They were very happy together, living with Virginia's mother (and Poe's aunt). They never had kids and their relationship was probably more brother-sister than husband/wife. Virginia fell ill with TB though and died at 24. Poe was absolutely devastated, and basically went off the rails (he had lost both is bio mother and his adoptive mother to the same disease, poor guy). He wrote a poem about his grief over Virginia's death called "Anabel Lee"... I'm not a huge poetry fan, but it's so beautiful and poignant and worth reading.
You know the hilarious thing? Stephen King also battled addictions to alcohol and cocaine for a long time. But personal opinion? Poe took this one. You don't step to the God of Horror and not get slapped like a damn sorcerer's apprentice. And as for "perving" on his cousin, it was a common practice to wed first cousins and to wed young during Poe's time, which was the 1880's - the 1900's. Women married as young as 12 years old and bore their first children at 13.
Poes first verse was good but the second one was eh. It's just fast rapping. Otherwise King had two good verses. Both of his were pretty good and he had that flow.
I doubt the real Stephen King would go after Poe for drinking and opiates; King has had his bouts with both alcohol and drugs, and has been very open about it.
nobody catches the line though. he said he would choke king with a trochee... while writing the entire verse in trochaic octameter... which is the meter poe wrote the raven in... his knowledge of the subject is absolutely absurd.

It's not fair to say that Poe "lost because he messed with little girls.". That's Presentism, a cultural bias. When Poe and Clemm were married, marriage between first cousins was legal in all 50 states. Furthermore, in all of their letters, nothing sexual was ever hinted at, and they never had children.
