  • 문 대통령, 집단체조 北 관람객 15만 명에 인사말
President Moon capped off the second day of the summit by attending perhaps North Korea's most famous cultural product, the Mass Games.
Not only did he attend, he became the first South Korean leader to deliver a speech to a mass North Korean audience, in this case, numbering some 150-thousand people.
We'll now listen to that in its entirety.
Citizens of Pyeongyang, I am very glad to see you all here tonight.
As the president of South Korea, I feel deeply honored to speak to you. As you can see with your own eyes, we are opening a new era together.
My fellow Koreans, Chairman Kim Jong-un and I had an encounter full of meaning at Panmunjeom on April 27th. We had a warm embrace. And today, we have agreed that there will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, we have solemnly announced both to our 80 million fellow Koreans and to the international community that a new era of peace has dawned on the Peninsula.
We have also affirmed the principle of national self-determination, that we ourselves will determine the fate of our people.
Also, we have firmly promised to advance a future of common prosperity, to independently restore our blood-based ties, and to develop inter-Korean relations in a thorough and dramatic way.
This fall, I, President Moon Jae-in, decided to make this trip to Pyeongyang.
Dear citizens of Pyeongyang, Chairman Kim Jong-un and I have agreed specifically to completely eliminate the threat and fear of war on the Korean Peninsula.
In addition, from Mt. Baekdusan to Mt. Hallasan, we promised to leave our future generations this beautiful land, free of nuclear weapons and nuclear threats.
And we will quickly take steps to fundamentally end the suffering of separated families before it's too late.
I send generous applause and thanks to Chairman Kim, who is walking along with me towards a new future.
Dear citizens of Pyeongyang, on this visit, I have witnessed the remarkable development of this city.
I have seen the kind of nation you are trying to build, how much you strive for peace and your bravery in hard times.
Dear fellow citizens, we are great. We are strong. We love peace. And we should live together. We lived together for over 5,000 years and have been separated for 70 years.
I propose today to completely end this 70-year separation and take a big step towards peace.
Chairman Kim and I will firmly join hands and work to build a new fatherland. Let us move into a new future together. I would like to thank the many Pyeongyang citizens, young people, students and children who have warmly welcomed our delegation.
    Thank you.

North Koreans...To meet you here like this, is a pleasure/honor! (Peace talks). Yes that is a good reason to celebrate! And he said it so warmly, so emotionally. This is how we South Koreans feel too. Exactly the same. We care about this movement beyond what most people can understand or compare with

I always come back to watch this because of the unique reaction from the North Korean public towards Moon Jae-in's speech. People weren't just fake applauding and cheering, but looking at each other in real shock, disbelief, and almost tears. They were clearly enamored and instantly gained respect for a leader who talked to them like a human, even if it is political hubris. These people have been living under what is effectively a war rationing economy for the past several decades. I wonder if North Koreans were even aware there were 80 million Korean people in total.
Kim Jong Un, his wife, and chief advisor were smiling in the beginning but were frowning by the end of his speech. Some news reports said this speech may have created anti-Kim elements among the public because he sounded so sincere compared to Kim or other North Korean speeches. It perhaps even showed how prone the NK public are to popular democratic movements/propaganda.

I, too, come back to this from time to time, remembering the first time I watched this. My heart was full of immense hope that the two Koreas would be able to usher in a new, lasting era of, at the very least, some communication, some dialogue, some agreement, some cooperation, some closeness, and all by themselves, between themselves. At some point, Moon Jae-In and Kim Jong-Un had to have known that this bubble was going to burst, and it did when Moon lost the presidency.
This was during Trump's term in office. While I abhor the man for his attitudes towards certain issues, and the way he basically just flat out lied about some of them, I must admit one thing: his aloofness and his fickleness with respect to the Korean Peninsula allowed for the two Koreas to take matters into their own hands, if only for this most brief of moments in history. And history will be kind to Moon Jae-In for, at the very least, facilitating a meeting to be had with Kim Jong-Un. And history will also be quick to remind us that Kim Jong-Un was the one who made the first move and open the door for communication between the two Koreas - something that rarely, if barely at all, has occurred in the past seventy five years since the division of the peninsula, and for the past seventy years since the armistice, seventy years to the day, the day before I have written this. Kim Jong-Un also allowed the incumbent leader of the southern half of the peninsula to speak directly to North Korean citizens - unheard of, unbelievable, a true miracle. *This* in particular is what makes this speech all the more profound in the timeline of the divided Korean Peninsula.
If one could call this hope, may this moment, those days, serve as history's attempt at a chance to right some wrongs, and to stand together instead of looking for ways to belittle or attack one another based on the clash of ideologies. May history remember this moment as one glimmer of possibility, one chance to dream, one wish to be fulfilled. May Koreans in the North and the South, and of the North and the South, never forget that, for all the cynicism behind the scenes, the fact that the president of South Korea spoke to citizens of Pyongyang (and I don't know how much they showed on North Korean TV, but I highly doubt his voice would have been allowed) was a spark that lit the fire of hope.
I do hope this moment is not a one-off every couple of decades, but that North and South Korea can come together and build a society on the Korean Peninsula that will look at one another with equal opportunities for both. I am a pessimist, cynically expecting the worst, but sincerely hoping for the best. This moment was a step in the right direction. Let's celebrate the steps in the direction towards making a unified Korea a viable and effective option for the people of both countries.

I'm curious to what extent the people in the stadium understood what Moon said because I heard NK defectors struggle different vocabularies when they come to South.

How I miss that light of hope at the end of the tunnel that this speech and those days had given me for those people... I just wish all that could've become true.
I dream North Koreans free to exit and enter their country whenever they want, South Koreans free to visit Pyongyang and know the people living there, I just wish more sharing and freedom. No matter whether there's a reunification into one country or not. They can keep being splitted with two different systems, but free to choose themselves individually, free to leave, free to stay, no Korea trying to threaten or destabilize the other. True mutual respect and acceptance.
Call it Hanguk, call it Joseon... Two brother countries that like brothers should live.
