    The professor was right - you cannot go wrong looking at rocks.
    Also, I love that story about the guy with the shirt who carried the buried bucket back out of the Sierras. Amazing.
    You three are strong hikers. Beautiful country.

    Hi from AZ, you are all amazing. I lived and hiked in Mammoth from 86-97 I love the Sierra's but don't miss the snow. The Devils post pile is the middle of a 400' deep flow of basalt. As the molten rock cooled it cracked to relieve the stress from shrinking. the exposed columns at the post pile were exposed by glaciers and are from the middle of the flow. The basalt cooled very slowly which is why they are so straight. You continue to inspire me. I am wishing you all the very best.

    Really enjoying your videos. The scenery is beautiful. When crossing streams, be sure to unhook sternum straps and hip belts, in case you lose your footing. Your backpack won’t drag you under. Be safe out there.

    Look ma, no search! . . . that basalt has a nice crystalline look to it, and I once thought it might be fun to grow synthetic crystals . . . and found out they're very particular about the neighborhood they grow in . . . so maybe in a location below a good sedimentary lid (since a granite lid would still be evident)?

    That part of the sierras is beautiful. You are past the crazy passes snd it a low water year. Once you are in Yosemite it looks easy but warning that while it’s gorgeous, it’s exhausting cuz you are walking in slabs of rock all day and lots of mosquitos cuz of the time of year. 1000 Island lake is gorgeous. But that section is just granite granite granite. But if you have to camp overnight, tuolumne meadows is beautiful. 23 miles on that rock without a break is hard on your feet. Be careful. I would love to backpack that part of Yosemite one day.

    There are folks who’d like to meet up in WA for trail magic….. are there places with a long dry stretch?

    • @hrconthepct2724
      @hrconthepct2724  3 роки тому

      I think WA is a great place to do Trail magic! Pick a spot where the PCT crosses a road and go for it! Places not near any resort or food are especially appreciated by hikers. Let us know your spot when you pick it! 😍

  • @kellyjohnson3617

    You are in the transition zone between the sierras snd the cascades that are nothing but volcanoes. I love Lassen national park. You will hike through the least scenic part but you will see even more volcanic activity than the sierras. Tho devils post pile is def the remnants of volcanic activity. Which is why the minerals in the rock cause it to form in those odd hexagonal shapes. Gotta love it.
