    Clean!!! Touching the obstacle and realizing you didn't die is always the first step. Jumping on and bailing is the second. Learning safe consistent bails is the third, then finally you get the muscle memory and control to make the trick. Progress is a beautiful thing.

    This is so great! Unless you're there in person, most people have never seen someone work up to a trick. The whole process of taking small steps to overcome fear and then committing. Textbook.

    Who did not cheer when you finally landed that??
    I gotta give you some props here for doing a skate video where a central theme is facing fear. Seeing your determination in facing you fears here was pretty damn impressive I gotta say.
    I’m 46 and started skating in the late 80’s. These
    days I just cruise and roll down the shitty alleys of east Van rolling over glass and rocks on my 55mm 86a Acid Pods. I was not born with much athletic talent and I was born to cautious by nature...and I’m also 6 foot 1 and 190lbs...not really ideal factors for skating but I love it anyways. Despite the challenge of the activity, I was out there facing fears...talent, style and skill was always subpar BUT I was still out there facing fear. And overcoming fear builds confidence that is transferable to other areas in life. Skateboarding is fun, and overcoming fear is super fun!
    Great channel man...I actually really enjoy the discussionS of the finer details of decks/wheels/trucks etc...I’ve been building “old timer” low vibration setups as a hobby while I’ve been introducing my sons to skating. My favourite setup for cruising is a modern 8.3 version of a Blockhead Hard Times deck. I ride hollow indys with medium bones bushing and the riptide pivot cups. I use the thin Dooks shock pads as risers...they get really flattened so they done really really rise the trucks much. The riptide cup makes the trucks mostly silent but I’ve also waxed areas of constant for pretty much guaranteed silence. For wheels the setup has Oj Mini Super Juice, 55mm 78a...Bronson G3 beatings in there...to be low, smooth and somewhat all terrain but have the deck look like a typical street deck is so cool to me. To have something close to this in the late 80’s would be a very ugly setup...I can’t think of any ways to make the above setup I’ve described above any smoother or quieter...open to input!
    I’m old and kinda broken but I am grateful that I can still enjoy the basic “roll for the soul” as I call it.
    Peace!

    You are a badass! Please don't feel embarrassed to share the outtakes. One of the many things I love about your videos is how honest and down to earth you are. I'm hella stoked for you, and though I've never done hand rails, this does make me want to push myself in other areas where I feel afraid to commit. After watching many of your videos, I noticed that we are the same age and share a similar timeline with skating, although I gave up skateboarding completely in 2004 when I became a full blown alcoholic/addict for 15 years. I'm back though and I find your videos incredibly motivating and inspiring. You are one of the good ones. Thanks for sharing and keep ripping! 🙌🤙

    Proud of you, bro. You nailed it! At 48, back skating for a few months, doing powerslides, revert slides, slappie grinds and manuals...I'm really wanting to get ollies back...and also 180 no complies. I just can't commit to them. So I'm doing ollies to axle stall (frontside) to build confidence and control and get that "ollie feel" back. It's been easily a decade since I did an ollie...maybe 28 years since I did them frequently and with meaningful control (able to ollie into board slides, lip slides, hurricanes and 50-50s). For the no-complies...they're right there but for the landing. Just have to commit to it. I'm tentatively trying frontside 180 shove-its too...so sad. Such an easy trick and I'm a chicken shizzle. An all padded (and helmeted) out chicken shizzle. But about a month ago, I was scared to try backside 180 revert slides. Now I do them all the time. You have to know when to hold back and build confidence...and when to go for it...especially when you're older and haven't done stuff in awhile. But when you get to that no excuses place...it's time to start going for it.
    P.S. Recorded my first clip! This is my current distance record for manuals: ua-cam.com/video/4dYJt1uq5JQ/v-deo.html.

  • @Blaststar
    @Blaststar 4 роки тому +4

    Man, I'm one of those guys that gets really sketched out about stuff like that big strip of tar at the landing. If I'm rolling up to a box and there's a leaf blowing around 8 feet to my side I'll fixate on it like "what the hell is that leaf doing...you stay away leaf". That tar strip would dominate my mind.

    Ben as a 41 year old I totally understand the fear of a trick that used to be on lock. as we get older the knowledge that we won't recover as fast or at all looms over us. I ate it big on some stairs in my late 20s and jacked my ankle so bad I lost switch for a few years now stairs terrify me. Anyway great vid, it's uplifting to see someone around my age shred and it got me pumped to get a new complete and jump back on after a 4 year break.

    I loved watching this because this is exactly what I do every time I go out to skate and try to land a kick flip. I’m determined to land one next time I go out now.

    Ben was walking oh so slowly going back up the steps until he made it then he was running and couldn't get back up fast enough. 👍👍👍

    Bro. U are an inspiration. I think we all have gone through this at one point in skating. Haha great looking boardslide btw.

    I've been trying to land a boardslide on this little handrail at my local park. This video was very helpful to me, thank you!
