Yep. I originally subscribed to Nomad Capitalist 8 years ago when he had 7000 subs, but un-subbed a few years ago. I do check in here once in a Blue Moon. In the past I added a few comments about my experience in Africa (Morocco and Tanzania primarily), but NC's subscribers are 98% "Westerners" - and Andrew has openly admitted to this: "Romance Novel daydreamers" . They view Africa with disdain, and even worse, a Colonizer mindset. As you know, working and investing in any of the 54 African Countries is not for the faint of heart. Its hard work, and only a special few - especially from the Diaspora - ever get there. But, I have estimated at least 100,000 American Diasporans have relocated to Africa over the past 5 years - mostly to West Africa (Ghana/The Gambia/etc.). For me, at the end of the day, it's not so much about attempting to transplant Western Cultural Capitalism to Thee Continent, it's about how at peace we are when we are there. There is no greater _Wealth_ than that. Good luck my Brother, and Peace be upon you and yours.
I have been involved in development in Africa for many years and part of that has been supporting social enterprises. You are right that in many counties it is so wide open that even something as simple as a pizza joint (that actually makes good pizza) can have fantastic returns. The part you missed is the real need to have a local partner if you are going to do anything on the ground. The nuances of local culture and the trust needed to success with any deal in Africa really requires those kinds of connections. If you have them the sky is the limit. I have seen apartments built in second and third cities in countries like Senegal get 20% yields and up.
You also can't be squeamish about bribes. Africa works in a certain way, and like no other. You want to succeed in Mozambique? You need to bribe the traffic officer just to not pay the fine for not having a drivers licence that he conveniently lost in his pocket. Give him a 2 litre coke, and licence magically appears! Be subtle of course, lest he accuse you of trying to bribe him.
The Chinese, Asians, Turks, Jews, Europeans, Indians and Arabs are silently making money in Ghana because of strong currency, good leaders with brains and stable economy!
I was in Africa for a couple of months almost 30 years ago -- Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Beautiful places, beautiful people. Everybody was so welcoming. I'd love to go back to see how it's changed.
I'll save you the trip: Only visit Cape Town and the Western Cape in general if you come to SA. You can tell where the provincial boundaries end and ANC controlled areas begin.

We lived in Egypt 🇪🇬 they are super friendly and welcoming. I recommend it if you are adventurous, patient and open-minded. If you're planning to do business there, be very vigilant and trust no one, everyone there will try to con you.
I am an Egyptian who was born and has always lived in Italy, I studied optics, IoT and indormatics, I am a graduate in business administration and I am designing a Smart Glasses with the knowledge acquired, and it will be one of the many products that will be part of my company of Optics, in addition to ophthalmic lenses. I have no intention of doing anything either in Italy or in Europe, I thought about returning to Egypt to set up this company but by studying various data, to date it seems that there are better countries for a combination of low personnel costs, ease of doing business and which are close to Europe for exports, and are Georgia, Morocco and Jordan. I saw that Egypt has a high tariff and infinite bureaucracy for exports

Investing in Africa ( well, depending on the country) is not for the faint-hearted but will rightly reward the resilient ones as the possibility of having astronomical ROI can’t be ignored, especially south of the Sahara, which has immense potential due to its great need for various infrastructures.
Morocco’s economy is greatly influenced by the royal family interests, also the automotive and aeronautical industry is booming, add to that the green hydrogen investments that are starting to take hold along the renewable energy.
Having been to Tanzania twice, can say that it is very underrated. If I could I would live and invest there. As a retiree, I can go there, but not sure if I would be allowed to invest. I'm not African American, but believe that the current president is doing all the right things and would be proud to be called a citizen....Just saying.

I’m Kenyan but in my opinion TZ will be a giant in a few decades. Prez Suluhu is doing a great job attracting business in TZ. They now have a portal where you can easily find details on how to set up business and immigration requirements. It’s a massive country with plenty of natural and wonderful people, as long as you respect their culture and norms…and speak Kiswahili

He would be a great guest on this topic. Cote d'Ivoire and Morocco, among others, have been of interest to me for the possibility of doing business in French.
I’m from Botswana and it’s rapidly developing however there’s still a lot of things we don’t have if I had the capital I’d implement 90% of American ideas or businesses and I’d be 100% certain that I will become a multi billionaire.
The hyper inflation alone will destroy any monetary gains made in most African countries. Secondly, most African countries have huge shortages of foreign reserves which makes it close to impossible to import goods and services. Thirdly, there's been plenty of cases of banks in kenya and even in ivory coast losing client accounts and money. Lastly, the bureaucracy in Africa is far more frustrating and ridiculous than anyone can imagine.
Nairobi had good internet speeds. Outside Nairobi, speeds were poor. Morocco seemed slow to me, but I was outside the large cities. Tunisia was good. That’s key for me. Wish someone could share wifi maps of African countries.
Outside Nairobi? I've been to all major cities in Kenya and a few towns and good internet speeds were pretty fine. Safaricom does an amazing job in terms of network coverage. Don't go on a Safari in the middle of nowhere and start complaining. The problem might be power disruptions outside Nairobi. Kenya Power won't head to your frustrations as fast sometimes.
Thanks for addressing Africa. I have been to Nairobi twice this year, and will go again in October. I love the Country. I am a fairly tech savvy Lawyer, with a strong background in business and construction law. However, I do not see myself practicing law in Kenya. (Practicing law anywhere is a lot of responsibility.) I could see myself using my capital and partnering with a local to invest in an african business or local real estate. It would be a grand adventure!
Andrew, great insights. I worked in Burundi last year for 4 months. It was my first experience living and working in Africa (I have traveled to many countries for safari, vacation, etc.). Burundi used to be part of Rwanda during the Belgian colonial period and split during independence in 1962. They are ethnically similar with the same languages. Burundi seems to be decades behind Rwanda. All the young smart people who could not get to Europe or North America were going to Rwanda. Most imports and higher end labor in Burundi came from Rwanda. Of course management level at hotels, businesses and restaurants all came from Kenya. Rwanda is a sweet spot cheaper than Kenya and well developed. I think the difference between Rwanda and Burundi is political, Rwanda is much safer and more stable. Burundi is still run by the military. The road to Kigali from Burundi is like this : in Burundi it’s beat up with pot holes, once you enter Rwanda it’s smooth like in the West. I could not visit Rwanda last year as all borders were closed due to Covid19, normally Kigali was only a 4 hour drive. Kenya is relatively most developed in Central Africa. South Africa, Nigeria, the security is terrible so hard to consider when you need an armed guard 24x7. Botswana yes security is good and travel business strong. Zim can be considered for the adventurous, great safaris at half the price of BOT.
With respect to Nigeria it depends. Abuja is a world class city Lagos is a nightmare. South Africa cape Town is amazing. Joburg it depends. Just like Mexico is now a kidnap heaven. Kenya in EAST AFRICA not central is vibrant but corruption holds it back the statt-up scene is hot. I have several investments in YC and A16z backed companies. Depends on your hustle really

South Africa is the most developed country on the whole continent and quite safe politically and business wise, no insurgency or terrorism and goal breakdown of systems as you have in Nigeria and Congo. South African has an open market system and some of freest media on the world. South Africa has regular criminality due to it Ma high inequality but this is not any more than what you’d find in NYC…house break ins, armed robberies and car hijackings, no terrorism

For me, I would welcome to learn more about Morocco. I've investigated opening a company in Morocco - fairly straight forward and not expensive. They also - if memory serves - a type of Visa that would correspond to the company model. The talent there is good - hiring employees in the range the 2-3K EUR p/m provides an above average lifestyle for them. I would love to learn more about residency and some of the nuances of operating a business / company in the country.
I'm in Morocco now. Residency was relatively easy. It requires a statement about where you reside, your income, and a criminal check. Thats about it if memory serves me well. Morocco is a closed currency though and this has huge effects on its payment system. For example, paypall does not convert to MAD. Its impossible to send money from paypall into Morocco. Furthermore, you need a specific kind of bank account to do online transactions above $1,000/year which is an incredibly small limit for online shopping.
@@harrisjm62 - The currency issue is definitely a problem. No worries about bringing currency into the country - the issue is getting it out. If I recall, the 'limits' are for Moroccan citizens - FGN nationals are not restricted as much (might be mistaken) - I know citizens have a max annual travel budget +/- 4K EUR. I don't bother with PayPal for any FGN txns - even IF they operated in MAD - they would rob you blind in FX - I use Wise (TransferWise) and they have great FX - also, the funds actually show up T+1 or T+2 depending on the time of day the remittance is initiated.
Togo would certainly be on that list if they would simply add and make English a priority in the public school systems. Togo leads Nigeria with annual port volume and it is the only deep-water port in all of West Africa. Togo also has an easy method of setting up a business online and does not require you to form fake paper-only partnerships with locals. Nor does Togo require you to pay enormous deposits to the country before setting up operations.

It is in the nation's best interest to train and prepare its youth to speak the official language of international trade and business. What about Namibia which is a relative new country just like Botswana its neighbor. Seem to have some good infrastructure in place already from German occupation like Botswana from English occupation. Lots of OIL, GAS, and Uranium activity in Energy sector in last couple of years. Not sure about residency.
Namibia has the best road infastructure in Africa and beats some of the top western countries in that category....however 1 thing that is concerning about namibia is that its one of the first African countries to sign up/agreed to roll out first the WEF 'health' pass, which will also lead to CBDC...I may be wrong on this but i remember reading this somewhere...that is worth investigating before thinking about namibia....it is a beautiful looking country otherwise
I would love to hear about more investment opportunities in Africa, especially Nigeria 🇳🇬, Liberia 🇱🇷 & Sierra Leone 🇸🇱-the latter who granted me citizenship (via DNA 🧬 test albeit it’s classified under “citizenship by descent” by the government). With the exception of Nigeria 🇳🇬 (I have been there 3 times already), most countries seem to be more “hands on” instead of virtual. If you are building an Internet company then Nigeria 🇳🇬, Ghana 🇬🇭, Egypt 🇪🇬, Kenya 🇰🇪, & South Africa 🇿🇦 are where it’s at.
We render our services in 3 african countries (allocating aviation manpower and remotely managing their contracts, among other services). Biggest problem have been sanitary and especially draconian/bureaucratic banking regulation (it looks a bit like what it was in Brazil during the 70s and early 80s)...

It's the cradle of mankind, and I feel like it's the final frontier of the world (economically speaking), and has a lot of potential: young labor force, natural resources. Northern Africa is a new growth zone for food(Chinese heavenly invested) and central Egypt has been a part of the country which has also made it through geographical resets.
Nigeria is a great place to invest. It is a freer market that USA. There is a lot of wealth in the country and numerous opportunities for those willing to take the small risk. Example areas are agricultural, tourism (obudu cattle ranch in calabar has been abandoned by the government due to lack of vision and will and it is a ripe target for acquisition for someone with a few million dollars to spare), real estate in cities like onitsha, Warri, benin etc. So many opportunities.

Côte D'Ivoire is definitely business friendly with an economic growth reaching all time highs. Construction (roads, landmarks, buildings, restaurants, schools, hospitals, etc.), Real Estate (private or commercial), Waste management (plastic recycling, etc.), Medical equipment for hospitals and clinics, Car dealerships, FinTech and the list goes on...
I remember requesting this from your channel and I'm so grateful you've done this. Thank you Nomad Capitalist. Africa isn't perfect but isn't all bad either, there are some pretty good opportunities on our continent. The problems we must deal with unfortunately ( at least in Kenya where I live) are corruption, political violence, and needless bureaucracy.
I have been living in Johannesburg South Africa for 7+ years and my experience is that lack of security is a myth. Yes, the stats are terrible, no there is statistically no such thing as a white genocide. It all depends on where you are situated. Don’t be fooled by perceptions as every section in society has its prejudice. I find the environment generally hostile in terms of lack of trust, scams and a general “I win when you lose” mentality. Big business is no exception. In fact, there is lots of accumulation of capital within a small group of large companies. And the culture is far from German in terms of quality and following process. The upside is lots and lots of freedom to do what you like. Johannesburg is difficult to invest in real estate in my experience because there appears to be an oversupply. The upside is that one can have a great lifestyle at low cost. If you’re tech savy, there are opportunities since the country is decades behind on internet business. There are also opportunities in tourism (besides Covid of course) and agriculture but I agree that one needs to have a local network to succeed: everything works through personal relationships. Infrastructure and governance are falling apart over time, which requires a certain self reliance and flexibility. I will still invest in tourism here once traffic increases. Agriculture is also open for efficient entrepreneurs. And internet business, as said.
I can't say the same for Cape Town where I lived for 5 years and worked in the medical field, and I lived in an area that is definitely among the more high end suburbs. I was mugged at gunpoint within a week in the city, while sitting on a train minding my own business - this all in the presence of several witnesses, none who could care to help or even be bothered at all. Thankfully, I am a former soldier (Swiss Army), so I could defend myself. Besides this incident, I've had things stolen from my home (once a bicycle, another time a 5 figure amount in cash), had a necklace ripped from my body, had my wallet stolen only to be returned by the police with the money conveniently gone. Maybe for some people, these types of things are normal, but I grew up in Switzerland where none of this happens. I ended up moving to Dubai - worst thing I had to deal with in the last few years was an illegal beggar bothering me for money at 2 am while walking back home alone.
I bought farmland in Morocco I pay zero taxes a year ...I am planning to buy beach property next and build a container vacation rentals ...overall I am very happy , also being close to both Europe and America

After extensive travel in West and some in South Africa my impression is that West Africa is now safer polically and physically. It is likely safer than parts of the USA and Northern Europe. Benin is up coming with a very stable government where they and sucessfully fought corruption.Benin's cotton and textile industries are growing phenominally. The country also gives tax incentives for investments in agriculture and tech. The infrastrucure is good and well maintained. Ghana is also very stable and safe. Ghana benefits from a highly educated english speaking population and they too have combatted corruption succesfully. As for South Africa, the recent years political direction is not encouraging and the high levels of violent crime is concerning. Hopefully the country will take a better path soon and it can again be attractive.
South Africa will never have peace until the Boers leave, I’m just being blunt & honest, I’ve studied their behaviors (social, business/economic practices, habits, etc…) and how everything they do is strategically targeted towards negatively impacting or causing disruptive incursions with the black majority. This is why they are creeping up on civil war & a possible mass expulsion of Europeans from the nation, it’s not safe to invest in that region & if you’re white, you might want to look into other venues, as it won’t be safe for you, the vitriol will likely spread to other countries on the continent. Best look elsewhere, for the safety of your wallet and self.
Lagos is obviously the choice destination for most foreigners..Abuja is more like an administrative city but it’s better planned and less chaotic than Lagos..Then you have other places in the South that you may be interested in..

Amazing content mate....am based in Zimbabwe and I think people have the worts if mot wrong assumption of the country...did you know despite a terrible economy as depicted by media but Zimbabwe is the largest USD using country in allbof Africa.....everything is sold in USD rytbup to the local market. I recently spent 2 months living in Tanzania, it was great. Spent time in both Dar es salaam and Zanzibar.
Investing in Africa ( well, depending on the country) is not for the faint-hearted but will rightly reward the resilient ones as the possibility of having astronomical ROI can’t be ignored, especially south of the Sahara, which has immense potential due to its great need for various infrastructures.

Having been to Tanzania twice, can say that it is very underrated. If I could I would live and invest there. As a retiree, I can go there, but not sure if I would be allowed to invest. They now have a portal where you can easily find details on how to set up business and immigration requirements. The hyper inflation alone will destroy any monetary gains made in most African countries. Secondly, most African countries have huge shortages of foreign reserves which makes it close to impossible to import goods and services. Thirdly, there's been plenty of cases of banks in kenya and even in ivory coast losing client accounts and money. Lastly, the bureaucracy in Africa is far more frustrating and ridiculous than anyone can imagine.

Nairobi had good internet speeds. Outside Nairobi, speeds were poor. Morocco seemed slow to me, but I was outside the large cities. Tunisia was good. That’s key for me. Wish someone could share wifi maps of African countries.
Outside Nairobi? I've been to all major cities in Kenya and a few towns and good internet speeds were pretty fine. Safaricom does an amazing job in terms of network coverage. Don't go on a Safari in the middle of nowhere and start complaining.
The problem might be power disruptions outside Nairobi. Kenya Power won't head to your frustrations as fast sometimes.

I am a fairly tech savvy Lawyer, with a strong background in business and construction law. However, I do not see myself practicing law in Kenya. (Practicing law anywhere is a lot of responsibility.) I could see myself using my capital and partnering with a local to invest in an african business or local real estate. It would be a grand adventure!

Andrew, great insights. I worked in Burundi last year for 4 months. It was my first experience living and working in Africa (I have traveled to many countries for safari, vacation, etc.). Burundi used to be part of Rwanda during the Belgian colonial period and split during independence in 1962. They are ethnically similar with the same languages. Burundi seems to be decades behind Rwanda. All the young smart people who could not get to Europe or North America were going to Rwanda. Most imports and higher end labor in Burundi came from Rwanda. Of course management level at hotels, businesses and restaurants all came from Kenya. Rwanda is a sweet spot cheaper than Kenya and well developed. I think the difference between Rwanda and Burundi is political, Rwanda is much safer and more stable. Burundi is still run by the military. The road to Kigali from Burundi is like this : in Burundi it’s beat up with pot holes, once you enter Rwanda it’s smooth like in the West. I could not visit Rwanda last year as all borders were closed due to Covid19, normally Kigali was only a 4 hour drive. Kenya is relatively most developed in Central Africa. South Africa, Nigeria, the security is terrible so hard to consider when you need an armed guard 24x7. Botswana yes security is good and travel business strong. Zim can be considered for the adventurous, great safaris at half the price of BOT.
With respect to Nigeria it depends. Abuja is a world class city Lagos is a nightmare. South Africa cape Town is amazing. Joburg it depends. Just like Mexico is now a kidnap heaven. Kenya in EAST AFRICA not central is vibrant but corruption holds it back the statt-up scene is hot. I have several investments in YC and A16z backed companies. Depends on your hustle really

South African has an open market system and some of freest media on the world. For me, I would welcome to learn more about Morocco. I've investigated opening a company in Morocco - fairly straight forward and not expensive. They also - if memory serves - a type of Visa that would correspond to the company model.
The talent there is good - hiring employees in the range the 2-3K EUR p/m provides an above average lifestyle for them.
I would love to learn more about residency and some of the nuances of operating a business / company in the country.
I'm in Morocco now. Residency was relatively easy. It requires a statement about where you reside, your income, and a criminal check. Thats about it if memory serves me well.
Morocco is a closed currency though and this has huge effects on its payment system. For example, paypall does not convert to MAD. Its impossible to send money from paypall into Morocco. Furthermore, you need a specific kind of bank account to do online transactions above $1,000/year which is an incredibly small limit for online shopping.
@@harrisjm62 - The currency issue is definitely a problem. No worries about bringing currency into the country - the issue is getting it out.
If I recall, the 'limits' are for Moroccan citizens - FGN nationals are not restricted as much (might be mistaken) - I know citizens have a max annual travel budget +/- 4K EUR.
I don't bother with PayPal for any FGN txns - even IF they operated in MAD - they would rob you blind in FX - I use Wise (TransferWise) and they have great FX - also, the funds actually show up T+1 or T+2 depending on the time of day the remittance is initiated.

Togo would certainly be on that list if they would simply add and make English a priority in the public school systems. Togo leads Nigeria with annual port volume and it is the only deep-water port in all of West Africa. Togo also has an easy method of setting up a business online and does not require you to form fake paper-only partnerships with locals. Nor does Togo require you to pay enormous deposits to the country before setting up operations.
It's a francophone colony. English isn't and won't be an official priority.

It is in the nation's best interest to train and prepare its youth to speak the official language of international trade and business. I’m interested in hearing more about investing on the ground in Ghana, Accra and Kumasi. There seems to be many opportunities there in many types of businesses.
What about Namibia which is a relative new country just like Botswana its neighbor. Seem to have some good infrastructure in place already from German occupation like Botswana from English occupation. Lots of OIL, GAS, and Uranium activity in Energy sector in last couple of years. Not sure about residency.
Namibia has the best road infastructure in Africa and beats some of the top western countries in that category....however 1 thing that is concerning about namibia is that its one of the first African countries to sign up/agreed to roll out first the WEF 'health' pass, which will also lead to CBDC...I may be wrong on this but i remember reading this somewhere...that is worth investigating before thinking about namibia....it is a beautiful looking country otherwise

Biggest problem have been sanitary and especially draconian/bureaucratic banking regulation (it looks a bit like what it was in Brazil during the 70s and early 80s)...

Nigeria is a great place to invest. It is a freer market that USA. There is a lot of wealth in the country and numerous opportunities for those willing to take the small risk. Example areas are agricultural, tourism (obudu cattle ranch in calabar has been abandoned by the government due to lack of vision and will and it is a ripe target for acquisition for someone with a few million dollars to spare), real estate in cities like onitsha, Warri, benin etc.

I have been living in Johannesburg South Africa for 7+ years and my experience is that lack of security is a myth. Yes, the stats are terrible, no there is statistically no such thing as a white genocide. It all depends on where you are situated. Don’t be fooled by perceptions as every section in society has its prejudice. I find the environment generally hostile in terms of lack of trust, scams and a general “I win when you lose” mentality. Big business is no exception. In fact, there is lots of accumulation of capital within a small group of large companies. And the culture is far from German in terms of quality and following process. The upside is lots and lots of freedom to do what you like. Johannesburg is difficult to invest in real estate in my experience because there appears to be an oversupply. The upside is that one can have a great lifestyle at low cost. If you’re tech savy, there are opportunities since the country is decades behind on internet business. There are also opportunities in tourism (besides Covid of course) and agriculture but I agree that one needs to have a local network to succeed: everything works through personal relationships. Infrastructure and governance are falling apart over time, which requires a certain self reliance and flexibility. I will still invest in tourism here once traffic increases. Agriculture is also open for efficient entrepreneurs. And internet business, as said.

I can't say the same for Cape Town where I lived for 5 years and worked in the medical field, and I lived in an area that is definitely among the more high end suburbs. I was mugged at gunpoint within a week in the city, while sitting on a train minding my own business - this all in the presence of several witnesses, none who could care to help or even be bothered at all. Thankfully, I am a former soldier (Swiss Army), so I could defend myself. Besides this incident, I've had things stolen from my home (once a bicycle, another time a 5 figure amount in cash), had a necklace ripped from my body, had my wallet stolen only to be returned by the police with the money conveniently gone. Maybe for some people, these types of things are normal, but I grew up in Switzerland where none of this happens. I ended up moving to Dubai - worst thing I had to deal with in the last few years was an illegal beggar bothering me for money at 2 am while walking back home alone.

After extensive travel in West and some in South Africa my impression is that West Africa is now safer polically and physically. It is likely safer than parts of the USA and Northern Europe. Benin is up coming with a very stable government where they and sucessfully fought corruption.Benin's cotton and textile industries are growing phenominally. The country also gives tax incentives for investments in agriculture and tech. The infrastrucure is good and well maintained. Ghana is also very stable and safe. Ghana benefits from a highly educated english speaking population and they too have combatted corruption succesfully. As for South Africa, the recent years political direction is not encouraging and the high levels of violent crime is concerning. Hopefully the country will take a better path soon and it can again be attractive.
South Africa will never have peace until the Boers leave, I’m just being blunt & honest, I’ve studied their behaviors (social, business/economic practices, habits, etc…) and how everything they do is strategically targeted towards negatively impacting or causing disruptive incursions with the black majority. This is why they are creeping up on civil war & a possible mass expulsion of Europeans from the nation, it’s not safe to invest in that region & if you’re white, you might want to look into other venues, as it won’t be safe for you, the vitriol will likely spread to other countries on the continent. Best look elsewhere, for the safety of your wallet and self.

Lagos is obviously the choice destination for most foreigners..Abuja is more like an administrative city but it’s better planned and less chaotic than Lagos..Then you have other places in the South that you may be interested in..
