I remember the McLain family, They are one of a kind musicians! They visited Mexico City around 1978 or 79, I don't remember. They played live on T.V. and that night at the Benjamin Franklin Library which is sponsored by The U.S. Embassy in Mexico. They also played during the weekend in Chapultepec Park which is the Mexican equivalent to Central Park in Manhattan, New York. It was memorable and the audience loved them!
Hello from the banks of the Kenai River in Soldotna, Alaska!! I can say that I grew up with your music! I first heard you in GlenAllan, AK at a concert you held for the pipeline workers. I was in preschool. When I enrolled in kindergarten in Soldotna, AK the next year you came to our school, then, and through to our graduation year in 1988, when you stopped touring here. I miss you all. Your family was like our family. Ive continued playing bluegrass here with my Dad and friends....we blend it with the sounds of Athabascan language....a native alaskan language. How I wish we could come to your concert in the Cave. One day we'll meet again....As I'm writing 40,000 acres are burning on the Kenai Peninsula and how we could use a MFB original song on the subject to lift us up!!! our regards, George Holly
I saw y'all play at my high school in Indonesia in 1977. Or maybe it was 1976. Someone made a board tape and gave it to me. I listened to it a zillion times as a kid. Loved it. thanks for your music.
I used to have the lp record of this group and this song is my favorite banjo song. I have searched far and wide for years to find this cut again. Thank You! to whoever posted this. I play banjo and want to learn it so bad ,wish I could find the tab for it. This is the only group I have ever heard do this song and they wrote it too.. It is a great but obscure song. The group is phenomenal and the players are great especially the two banjo pickers. The banjo's they use have a great tone.
I remember this, I was in the videotape room working when they were producing this show. The audio would be a straight mix coming from the same board that was used to produce the news every night so no sweetening or remixing would have happened on this performance. Just saying that so that everyone knows. It actually sounded way better to the naked ear live in the studio. Nothing wrong with the board, I just don't see any recording studio mics set up so obviously they are using the news anchors lavalier mics. Keep that in mind while you listen.
Does anyone have footage (or "playage") of the Concerto for Bluegrass Band and Orchestra? One of my all time favorite McClain Family Band pieces, written by Phillip Rhodes.
If you're a fan of the McLains (and who isn't?!) check out my recent book about them: Bluegrass Ambassadors: The McLain Family Band in Appalachia and the World.
The best banjo song ever!!!

Wow. I remember hearing the McLain family Band when I was a student at Brevard Music Center in NC years ago. They were GREAT.

Amazing musicianship and great people to boot.
@56Edify Ditto. We used to go to their concerts at West High School in Anchorage in the late 70s when I was a kid.
🤠👍
I remember first seeing the band w/Ralph Emory/Nashville Now. One of the ladies buck-danced/flat footed.
I love it !!
