I suppose seeking redemption is trying to do the right thing regardless of if the person never forgives you. What she did was deeply unforgivable yet kouta still had the maturity to acknowledge nuance to see the broken life that led to the emotional stunting/immaturity which led to her killing his family.
The fact that he did it to move on and not hold a grudge technically is still forgiveness, though. My interpretation was that we asked the audience Works supposed to take that statement literally. I think what he really meant, and this is coming from someone who's both watched them anime and read the manga, but my interpretation has always been that what he meant is he can not forget just because someone forgive someone doesn't mean they forget. Forgiving someone doesn't require someone to forget it doesn't even require someone to have anything to do with the person it's just moving on with your life and letting it go. So technically speaking, what he's really doing is forgiving in a way.
@lufsolitaire5351 Yes, but technically speaking, that is still forgiveness. So basically, what he's doing is deciding not to hold a grudge and moving on with his life. That is actually pretty much the definition if you look up forgiveness, not holding a grudge. I know it said he couldn't forgive, but in a way, it's a contradiction, which is why I don't think it was meant to be taken literally. I think it was strictly talking about the fact that he can't forget what she did. That's the interpretation I got from watching the anime and even reading the manga.

It was his fault. He made a lonely girl his friend and then lied, ignored her and became close to Yuka. All he had to do was stay loyal to Kaede (Lucy)
Observe how, after she admits shes remorseful for killing his family and bringing him pain and sadness, Kouta also says sorry because he understands she dealt with pain and sadness too. She can't help but smile a little, realizing that the person she brought pain upon also has empathy for her too, and that is what diminishes his hatred for her.
Lucy has to be one of the most heartbreaking characters ever written. What she’s done is so beyond unforgivable. All the families she’s murdered after the incident at the orphanage, murdering Kouta’s family right in front of him, but god I feel nothing but heartbreak for her. For her to grow up in an orphanage, where even the adults working there ostracized her, relentlessly tormented by those bullies, have that girl betray her trust which in resulted her watching that poor dog, her only friend, get beaten to death, and spend god knows how long locked in a facility being experimented on and tortured. What she’s been through is gut wrenching.
It’s hard to decide whether you should hate Lucy, or feel sorry for her, and that is how you know that the protagonist of a show is just amazing. Literally I and countless others have felt such an array of emotions from this show. It’s amazing the mixed feelings this show gives the viewers, which goes to show how amazing it is. I love this show, and it will always have a place in my heart till the day I die.

It’s okay to have regrets. I think regrets are apart of life. We have made decisions and choices we aren’t proud of. And many of those things will go to our graves with us. Our regrets are such a strong part of us because they make us who we are today. If our mistakes weren’t made then there is no telling who we would be today. That’s what I tell myself Belle.
I honestly like Kouta here. He knew he couldn’t forgive Lucy, but he at least accepted it, because what will getting angry do to bring your dead family back? Nothing. He just had to move on from that so things will just go.

Lucy didn't deserve any of those unforgivable moments in her life. That poor girl was relentlessly bullied until she snapped. Kouta was so good to her that in the shortest, yet most unforgettable days of her life she got to be a happy normal girl when she and Kouta played. Seeing their final moments her, Lucy was truly happy that someone loved her and she will never forget that.
Humans made Lucy a monster. They made fun of her, they disgusted her, they tortured her. Humans would do anything to save themselves from extinction. Even if it means killing children that were considered different. But in the end humans are the monsters. They lie, kill, destroy, and take until there’s nothing left. In some way, humans are monsters. Possibly even worse than demons.
Do Nathan the people who were corrupted by their own darkness and greed paid the price for their misguided deeds. But it’s not to late for us. There’s still a chance to make things right.
I dislike Kohta. Yes he says all of this to Lucy, and it's sweet in a way. But then he tells his cousin he's always liked her and marries her ten years later and names his kid Nyu. I can't tell what Kohta really feels.
The best thing about this scene is how perfectly the facial expressions are drawn, especially for Lucy. For the emotions she is feeling in these moments, her face is drawn so accurately. It really adds to the feeling of the scene.
This has to be one of the best animated scenes depicting a woman just about to break down. The trembling whilst hiding her face. Even the hug. I've had a lot of weird goodbyes because of my horrible being. It is such a ripened yet hallow feeling knowing you re going to hug someone for the last time. What is even more tragic is when you didn't know it was the last kiss. This is why we should admire the ending, which to me, it felt fulfilling.

I love and respect how forgiving Kouta is towards Lucy. I’m not sure I would have the strength to break the endless cycle of hate and sorrow Lucy is trapped in.

This is a very emotional scene, though I didn’t cry at this part like everyone else did…it was the part when Nyu cuts the bow tie and pretends to be Kota’s sister and saying how much she forgives him.
Lucy and Kouta always ❤. Makes me sad about the manga ending. Seeing a reboot of the series but with them being happy together will give me closure and restore my faith in humanity. Don't give up people. I wish i can hug both of the characters. I feel bad for both of them. Lucy I'd comfort more due to the fact her life was hell from the start. Killing people will be always wrong but I understand the pressure she had as child. She deserves to live and be happy!
They both suffered too much in their past. Kaede/Lucy was ignored and mistreated by humans and she betrayed the one human who was kind to her. Kouta lost his sister and father from the girl whom he thought was his friend. What's worse is that due to the shock he got that day, he just controlled his memories on his own. Yet, despite their past, they still loved each other.
The thing is, Lucy was bullied so much and had her mentality broken by humanity. When she saw Kouta with his cousin, who was a girl, she thought he lied to her on purpose and never truly cared for her. She thought he showed interest in her since she was some rare creature and didn't genuinely love anything about her. She had been hurt in every way by people around her and couldn't tell that he didn't mean to do it. When Kouta tackled her on the train begging her to stop killing after she killed his father and sister, it was then that she realized too late that she lost the only person in her life who truly loved her.
@mattgerrish908 I get where your coming at but it's still possible for a romance to blossom between Kouta and Kaede(Lucy). Especially if Kouta himself understands her pain and that she really made a mistake as a kid. The thing is when i see people say she done bad things most of it was when she was a child. Things could've very well been turned around. I can see multiple possibilities good and bad for the story as well as the universe itself.

I believe in redemption in the same life. If Kratos can redeem himself so can Lucy as a Diclonis. Those two could've very well married and been together. After all they are both human ❤
This scene gave me the feels... :< To realize that you can't be there in your friend's life to help them. To those who've got childhood friends who you've helped, a salute to you.
The climax of the series. Kouta and Lucy at their core were both kind people, and her life could have been drastically different had she had a better upbringing. Anyone could snap if all they've ever been shown is cruelty and betrayal. That doesn't justify/excuse murder, but we are most of the time victims of our own circumstances.
That's what i was trying to say but people went nutty on me. Killing is never justifiable. Lucy deserves love and a better life. She can be redeemed. I feel for her because her upbringing was bad. Anyone could snap under that. She is easily the victim too in all of this. These 2 should've been together. I support this ship, Lucy x Kouta.
How is she cold exactly? From what I've seen so far she seems to regret her actions. Hence why she does the hand gesture to show moral pain and remorse for her actions.
Lucy is such a tragic character, she never asked for her life, and the truth is she is extremely sorry for the destruction and chaos and murder she's caused, she didn't want to do any of it but she had no choice because the world couldn't be good to her, she did what she had to to survive. Even though she feels truly sorry for what she's done, the world never once apologised to her or gave her anything good aside from Kouta.
Except it wasn’t really the world that made her suffer. Just some of the worst parts of it. And by giving into the urge to kill innocent people, she destroyed any hope for humanity (or at least the better parts of it) to see her as anything other than a monster. A classic scenario where the blame doesn’t lie on just one person/group.

In her eyes it was the world turned their back on this her. My points here still doesn't justify but think about it. Parents abandoned her and society failed her and humanity abused this character. Life can be hell so we prepare for it. However we treat each other with kindness and respect so the coldness of life gets warm. Lucy didn't get that love and she was only a kid, a powerful one. Not like she wanted to kill, she lost it and had a mental breakdown. We've seen the regret in her actions she ISN'T evil. Imagine not having anyone who understands you like she did, like your a freak, an object, Casted away like some trash... This is the very reason why we all need to treat each other with compassion and kindness. No one deserves that kind of hell especially a child. Lucy is more human than most of the people in this series, sometimes i debate that in real life too. *drops the mic*
Her story reminds me of the twins from Black Lagoon. In this case it was involved a sorta mutation, but even though the life and those people, that she tried to understand, really ruined her.
Very interesting how they put the lyrics “Kyrie, fons bonitatis, Kyrie, ignis divine eleison” right after Lucy says “I’ve lived in hope of telling you how sorry I am.” It means “O Lord, fountain of kindness, O Lord, divine fire, have mercy.” Suppose that reflects she feels so beyond guilty of what she did. Poor Lucy! 😭 I’ve not seen Elfen Lied but sort of know what it’s about and Lucy’s actions! I must watch it! ❤️❤️❤️
Lucy is one of those characters you don’t really know how to feel about. On one hand you want to pity her for all the bullying, she just wanted to be loved and have a family. On the other hand she intentionally killed entire families including Kota’s because she was mad that she didn’t have what they did. Then you go back and you can feel bad because she was experimented on and treated like nothing more than a weapon. The torture and the way they talked to her just made her hate humanity more. Lucy isn’t a hero, but she isn’t necessarily a villain. She can admit she’s wrong but also do some very bad things just because she knows she has the power. I hope that in the end, Lucy does eventually try to be a good person for her own sake and for Kota

It's how it should be... the kiss she gave him was meant to "tell him" her feelings towards him... and when he huged her, was him understanding her pain and his emotions towards her... it was meant to be more satisfying that way
Well what you see here it’s one of the 3 personalities she has. That’s why she shows remorse. Because right now is the regular Lucy. The anime never explained that much but the one who’s talking to her the evil voice is a personality on its own. And when that personality emerges then she’s a serial killer. Basically that personality is the true queen of Diclonius who want to end the human race.
@user-np6qz2ed7i that is something I don't believe in. The robot voice as it's called is something she developed after going through hell as a child. I doubt other Diclonis are like that otherwise people would die everywhere. In reality she has a good heart but got mixed in the darkest regions of humanity. I'd hug and comfort Lucy and show her the love and compassion she never got. She is not a monster but was trapped with monsters.

I fail to see how some people would say Elfen Lied hasn't aged well. Yeah, it may be hard to watch for some people due to how dark, edgy, and tragic it is, but it is by no means a bad anime! Besides, the premise of Elfen Lied isn't hard to understand.
I agree tbh, i read an article somewhere saying that the edge really makes this anime lose its seriousness etc etc but even if that is true, it still executes many things right like this very scene. Its sad the franchise is now more or less dead and has a fanbase that has decreased in numbers drastically over time but its still holds up to this very day. I hope this gets a reboot or season 2 at some point, if it will ever happen.
Damn too much, she has to die in the final scene in the manga, I can't really accept the fact that kouta had to end the suffering, pain and agony of Lucy,. But seriously I can't accept that she's dead. Pls understand it kinda hurts me the same way that she has to die.
Lucy doesn't have to die. Especially after what she went through. She deserves redemption but needs to live. Needs to be accepted as a human. I've seen tragic heroes live. I struggle to accept the manga ending to this day. And i never will accept it. This whole series needs a reboot and Lucy having a happy life with her husbando.
If you watch this anime in one go entirely related and identify in a way with the main characters and then watch this scene at the end you trust me you will feel emotionally drained from the tears you will shread
This is hands down my favorite series I will never share with anyone. Only those who have seen it through know the nudity is only a minor plot device in the pharaonic complexity of this thriller.
I have two problems with this scene: 1. Lucy does feel remorseful, but only because her actions hurt Kouta. In reality she doesn’t give a shit about Kanae or Kouta’s dad. She wouldn’t feel so remorseful if Kouta didn’t end up getting fucked up from witnessing his family getting murdered, therefore ending their friendship. Lucy doesn’t have remorse for killing innocent people in general. Her recourse is entirely transactional. The only time she ever showed remorse for killing innocent people is when she was a kid and the voice first showed up. Other than that, nothing. We feel bad for Lucy/Kaede because of how she was treated throughout her life due to being a Diclonii, and for being a cute anime girl. But we don’t feel sorry for most mass murderers or mass killers. I guess Ted Bundy and Dylan and Eric are exceptions with their huge female fan clubs but still, we rarely ever feel sorry for these people regardless of how bad life was for them. 2. Kouta forgave her WAY too easily (yes I know he said he’d never forgive her for what she did but he still pretty much ended up forgiving her). I mean for fucks sake, the dude still lovingly embraced her and ended up kissing her, the one who ruined his life by brutally slaughtering his family. It’s even worse when said murderer is your childhood friend. I don’t care how much I loved the person back then who did this, I would feel nothing but burning hot hatred for the person who murdered my parents or my siblings. I would have to hold myself back from murdering them if they somehow got off from their crime. I could never forgive them. Especially over a petty as hell reason as to why they were murdered, because the murderer was delusional in that her love interest spurned her for his cousin (SWEET HOME ALABAMA, ROLL TIDE). And I could sure as hell would never kiss them if said murderer was a childhood crush. The fact that Kouta still loves Lucy/Kaede (and not just Nyu, remember) is fucking laughable. That’s just my take on it, though. If Lucy showed guilt for not only putting Kouta through that hell, but for also for killing not only Kanae and Kouta’s dad, but also the scores of innocents in general, then I’d be a bit more okay with this. But this in my eyes is just awful writing, having Lucy get off way to easily for her crimes. At least Kouta expressed hatred for Lucy in the manga (in the manga, Kaede and Lucy were complete separate personalities, while in the anime, Kaede and Lucy are the exact same person. Lucy has three personalities in the manga, and two in the anime).
I watched this anime in 2011. I am sooo sorry if I'm remembering it in a really wrong way, but I remember like in one scene (i think it was the bus scene when they were child) lucy was having a mental breakdown, then she said "Kohta, please kill me if i kill more people". And the other thing is, when Lucy escaped, Nana came to take Lucy back. Before the fighting starts Nana says "You've killed so many people" and Lucy says "No I did not". I mean, she is feeling guilty for what she did to people. She even told Kohta to kill her if she kills many people, IDK, I may be wrong tho. It has been almost 10 years since I watched it
So many people in the fandom don't realise her name isn't Lucy Lucy is just one of the names of her personalities/alters. Due to the immense trauma she was under, her personalities split into 3. Kaede: The lonely girl who was bullied, neglected, abandoned and abused. The stubborn but lonely girl who wanted nothing but love and acceptance. (Main host) Lucy: The darker part of their personality, the one fully locked into dicloni instinct who has the killer intent. The main personality who killed Kouta's parents and killed so many others. Nyu: The innocent, naive and sweet persona we all know
Honestly I remember being anxious all the time while watching this show because everyone was getting mutilated, even scenes like this I thought Kouta was going to explode lol
People who regret doing horrible things in their lifetime, deserve a second chance. Or someone to help them heal on the inside. Lucy may have done horrible things: but she needs a friend and someone who can, all over again, give her happiness. A happiness capable of not making her feel like a monster. Kouta, thank you for loving Lucy. 😊

This is my favorite anime of all time and I was so disappointed with the manga, I really did not like it. The show cutting out Nozomi was a GOOD call! I hated that bitch lol.
This is how the manga should've ended. These 2 love birds having a happy ending. Maybe a timeskip into the future where they have kids. Kouta may be dense but he means well and will take good care of Lucy. This is my opinion, I personally think Lucy isn't bad. Trauma she went through was messed up and if she had loving parents in her life she would've went the right path. A lost child to troubled teen. I'd help her if I could. (Anime and manga needs a reboot)
I mean everyone is saying kouta should've ended up with her but i have to disagree here. Yes i understand the shit she's been through and i really do feel for her and i hoped she would've gotten the love she so desperately desired, but honestly it would've fucked my mind if Kouta ended up with her after everything she did to him. No matter how much he loved her or what she has been through, THIS WOMAN KILLED HIS FAMILY she literally sliced them in front of him, and no matter how much you love a person, you could never go past such trauma.It's not like she betrayed him or cheated on him or did something that could possibly be mended over time, she literally chopped his sister and father in half, and while doing so she was 100% conscious and aware of her actions and what she was doing to him, but yet she still did it, this girl knew more than anyone what it felt like to have something you love killed in front of you, yet she didn't have an ounce of sympathy for the only person who stood by her and still consciously chose to kill his family in front of him. In my opinion there are things far more important than love, and him being with her would have traumatized him even more, cuz even though he loved her, everytime he would've looked at her he would have remembered what she made him experience. No matter what she's been through nor what she was born to do, this shit is unforgivable. I'm still baffled that he still kissed her after remembering what she did to him. I tried to hypothetically put myself in his shoes, and honestly if it was me i would've probably killed her at the spot and never would've forgiven her but well well this is merely an anime after all. I'm still shocked there are people that ship them together. Like yeah i don't ship him with his cousin either cuz that shit is gross, but i am glad he didn't end up with Lucy either because this way it's more realistic.

Yes, she's responsible for every murder she commits, but it was also the DNA voice in her head poisoning her thoughts and driving her to kill, telling her that Kouta never cared about her at all. This is inherent in the Diclonius species. At that point, when it seemed like the only good thing she had in the world was nothing but a lie, her hope crumbled and she gave in to that voice. Add to that fact that she herself was a very young, emotional, impressionable child. She's absolutely still responsible, but I don't think it's fair to say her head was completely clear at the time. I also think that Lucy and Kouta can find common ground in the pain they've endured. And you could say Kouta's pain is because of Lucy, but if we're being completely honest, his pain is because of the people who tortured and abused Lucy and made her feel like she was worth nothing in this world.

I could forgive her due to how she only does it due to what everyone else did to her. If you're nice to Lucy, you're safe. So basically the series teaches you if you treat people like shit, expect shit back. Lucy was innocent, but not being human, was tortured and turned into a murderer, and even then she kills to live aside from when she breaks down and kills some innocents.

They are actual cousins. Everything that I’ve read on it refers to them as such and while I’m not sure as to where. She apparently referred to his dad as uncle. Japan has different cultural acceptances in regards to cousin relationships though. Luckily Kouta & Yuka don’t end up together in the anime. The entirety of it on Koutas side was most likely motivated by repressed emotions for Kaede. The only time he reciprocated was during the rain kiss and it was similar to him & Kaede in the rain as kids. Since Yuka’s the only girl he can remember, it’d make sense he’d confusingly associate those feelings with her. There’s subtle symbolism with the rain falling down the statues like a tear, referencing Lucy. Even afterwards, he ignores Yuka’s wish to always be with him. And instead tells Nyu he’ll always be with her. He tells Yuka he likes her, but he tells Lucy loves her. Kouta & Yuka dont have any other romantic interactions, and there’s no reaffirmation of them being a couple. If anything the opposite happens when Yuka realizes Kouta always loved Nyu, not her. So in the anime, everything emphasizes that Yuka serves as a contrast. Not an actual relationship. With Kouta and Kaede beginning a new, happy life together.

I think it was really mature of this anime to have Kouta not forgive Lucy, yet show he still cares about her.
I suppose seeking redemption is trying to do the right thing regardless of if the person never forgives you. What she did was deeply unforgivable yet kouta still had the maturity to acknowledge nuance to see the broken life that led to the emotional stunting/immaturity which led to her killing his family.
The fact that he did it to move on and not hold a grudge technically is still forgiveness, though. My interpretation was that we asked the audience Works supposed to take that statement literally. I think what he really meant, and this is coming from someone who's both watched them anime and read the manga, but my interpretation has always been that what he meant is he can not forget just because someone forgive someone doesn't mean they forget. Forgiving someone doesn't require someone to forget it doesn't even require someone to have anything to do with the person it's just moving on with your life and letting it go. So technically speaking, what he's really doing is forgiving in a way.
@lufsolitaire5351 Yes, but technically speaking, that is still forgiveness. So basically, what he's doing is deciding not to hold a grudge and moving on with his life. That is actually pretty much the definition if you look up forgiveness, not holding a grudge. I know it said he couldn't forgive, but in a way, it's a contradiction, which is why I don't think it was meant to be taken literally. I think it was strictly talking about the fact that he can't forget what she did. That's the interpretation I got from watching the anime and even reading the manga.

It was his fault. He made a lonely girl his friend and then lied, ignored her and became close to Yuka. All he had to do was stay loyal to Kaede (Lucy)
This really shows Lucy doesn’t need to be in her Nyu personality to have a sweet and caring heart. Definitely THE best scene in the show ❤️😢
Observe how, after she admits shes remorseful for killing his family and bringing him pain and sadness, Kouta also says sorry because he understands she dealt with pain and sadness too. She can't help but smile a little, realizing that the person she brought pain upon also has empathy for her too, and that is what diminishes his hatred for her.
Mainly it shows that she would have been a sweet and caring person if she was treated like a human being.

Lucy has to be one of the most heartbreaking characters ever written. What she’s done is so beyond unforgivable. All the families she’s murdered after the incident at the orphanage, murdering Kouta’s family right in front of him, but god I feel nothing but heartbreak for her. For her to grow up in an orphanage, where even the adults working there ostracized her, relentlessly tormented by those bullies, have that girl betray her trust which in resulted her watching that poor dog, her only friend, get beaten to death, and spend god knows how long locked in a facility being experimented on and tortured. What she’s been through is gut wrenching.
It’s hard to decide whether you should hate Lucy, or feel sorry for her, and that is how you know that the protagonist of a show is just amazing. Literally I and countless others have felt such an array of emotions from this show. It’s amazing the mixed feelings this show gives the viewers, which goes to show how amazing it is. I love this show, and it will always have a place in my heart till the day I die.

Our regrets are such a strong part of us because they make us who we are today. If our mistakes weren’t made then there is no telling who we would be today. That’s what I tell myself Belle.
I honestly like Kouta here. He knew he couldn’t forgive Lucy, but he at least accepted it, because what will getting angry do to bring your dead family back? Nothing. He just had to move on from that so things will just go.

Lucy didn't deserve any of those unforgivable moments in her life. That poor girl was relentlessly bullied until she snapped. Kouta was so good to her that in the shortest, yet most unforgettable days of her life she got to be a happy normal girl when she and Kouta played. Seeing their final moments her, Lucy was truly happy that someone loved her and she will never forget that.
One of the greatest anime ever. Period. Don't care. And oh wow, 5 long years since I posted this, and I just realized all these likes, thank you!

The best thing about this scene is how perfectly the facial expressions are drawn, especially for Lucy.
For the emotions she is feeling in these moments, her face is drawn so accurately. It really adds to the feeling of the scene.
This has to be one of the best animated scenes depicting a woman just about to break down. The trembling whilst hiding her face. Even the hug. I've had a lot of weird goodbyes because of my horrible being. It is such a ripened yet hallow feeling knowing you re going to hug someone for the last time. What is even more tragic is when you didn't know it was the last kiss. This is why we should admire the ending, which to me, it felt fulfilling.

This is a very emotional scene, though I didn’t cry at this part like everyone else did…it was the part when Nyu cuts the bow tie and pretends to be Kota’s sister and saying how much she forgives him.

Kaede/Lucy was ignored and mistreated by humans and she betrayed the one human who was kind to her.
Kouta lost his sister and father from the girl whom he thought was his friend. What's worse is that due to the shock he got that day, he just controlled his memories on his own.
Yet, despite their past, they still loved each other.
Indeed it was a grave mistake not to make Kouta and Lucy a couple. Makes me sad this didn't happen. I hope it will be canon someday.
The thing is, Lucy was bullied so much and had her mentality broken by humanity. When she saw Kouta with his cousin, who was a girl, she thought he lied to her on purpose and never truly cared for her. She thought he showed interest in her since she was some rare creature and didn't genuinely love anything about her. She had been hurt in every way by people around her and couldn't tell that he didn't mean to do it. When Kouta tackled her on the train begging her to stop killing after she killed his father and sister, it was then that she realized too late that she lost the only person in her life who truly loved her.

Especially if Kouta himself understands her pain and that she really made a mistake as a kid. The thing is when i see people say she done bad things most of it was when she was a child. Things could've very well been turned around. I can see multiple possibilities good and bad for the story as well as the universe itself.
Here it seems to reveal that despite what Lucy has done, she is still a tragic villain that went through much in her life.

The climax of the series. Kouta and Lucy at their core were both kind people, and her life could have been drastically different had she had a better upbringing. Anyone could snap if all they've ever been shown is cruelty and betrayal. That doesn't justify/excuse murder, but we are most of the time victims of our own circumstances.
That's what i was trying to say but people went nutty on me. Killing is never justifiable. Lucy deserves love and a better life. She can be redeemed. I feel for her because her upbringing was bad. Anyone could snap under that. She is easily the victim too in all of this. These 2 should've been together. I support this ship, Lucy x Kouta.

God damn this scene was not just a master piece. The song is also a perfect master piece in this scene
Lucy is such a tragic character, she never asked for her life, and the truth is she is extremely sorry for the destruction and chaos and murder she's caused, she didn't want to do any of it but she had no choice because the world couldn't be good to her, she did what she had to to survive. Even though she feels truly sorry for what she's done, the world never once apologised to her or gave her anything good aside from Kouta.
Except it wasn’t really the world that made her suffer. Just some of the worst parts of it. And by giving into the urge to kill innocent people, she destroyed any hope for humanity (or at least the better parts of it) to see her as anything other than a monster. A classic scenario where the blame doesn’t lie on just one person/group.

In her eyes it was the world turned their back on this her. My points here still doesn't justify but think about it. Parents abandoned her and society failed her and humanity abused this character. Life can be hell so we prepare for it. However we treat each other with kindness and respect so the coldness of life gets warm. Lucy didn't get that love and she was only a kid, a powerful one. Not like she wanted to kill, she lost it and had a mental breakdown. We've seen the regret in her actions she ISN'T evil. Imagine not having anyone who understands you like she did, like your a freak, an object, Casted away like some trash... This is the very reason why we all need to treat each other with compassion and kindness. No one deserves that kind of hell especially a child. Lucy is more human than most of the people in this series, sometimes i debate that in real life too.

Her story reminds me of the twins from Black Lagoon. In this case it was involved a sorta mutation, but even though the life and those people, that she tried to understand, really ruined her.
Very interesting how they put the lyrics “Kyrie, fons bonitatis, Kyrie, ignis divine eleison” right after Lucy says “I’ve lived in hope of telling you how sorry I am.” It means “O Lord, fountain of kindness, O Lord, divine fire, have mercy.” Suppose that reflects she feels so beyond guilty of what she did. Poor Lucy! 😭 I’ve not seen Elfen Lied but sort of know what it’s about and Lucy’s actions! I must watch it! ❤️❤️❤️
Lucy is one of those characters you don’t really know how to feel about. On one hand you want to pity her for all the bullying, she just wanted to be loved and have a family.
On the other hand she intentionally killed entire families including Kota’s because she was mad that she didn’t have what they did.
Then you go back and you can feel bad because she was experimented on and treated like nothing more than a weapon. The torture and the way they talked to her just made her hate humanity more.
Lucy isn’t a hero, but she isn’t necessarily a villain. She can admit she’s wrong but also do some very bad things just because she knows she has the power.
I hope that in the end, Lucy does eventually try to be a good person for her own sake and for Kota

I doubt other Diclonis are like that otherwise people would die everywhere. In reality she has a good heart but got mixed in the darkest regions of humanity. I'd hug and comfort Lucy and show her the love and compassion she never got. She is not a monster but was trapped with monsters.

I fail to see how some people would say Elfen Lied hasn't aged well. Yeah, it may be hard to watch for some people due to how dark, edgy, and tragic it is, but it is by no means a bad anime! Besides, the premise of Elfen Lied isn't hard to understand.
I agree tbh, i read an article somewhere saying that the edge really makes this anime lose its seriousness etc etc but even if that is true, it still executes many things right like this very scene. Its sad the franchise is now more or less dead and has a fanbase that has decreased in numbers drastically over time but its still holds up to this very day. I hope this gets a reboot or season 2 at some point, if it will ever happen.

This is hands down my favorite series I will never share with anyone. Only those who have seen it through know the nudity is only a minor plot device in the pharaonic complexity of this thriller.
I have two problems with this scene:
1. Lucy does feel remorseful, but only because her actions hurt Kouta. In reality she doesn’t give a shit about Kanae or Kouta’s dad. She wouldn’t feel so remorseful if Kouta didn’t end up getting fucked up from witnessing his family getting murdered, therefore ending their friendship. Lucy doesn’t have remorse for killing innocent people in general. Her recourse is entirely transactional. The only time she ever showed remorse for killing innocent people is when she was a kid and the voice first showed up. Other than that, nothing. We feel bad for Lucy/Kaede because of how she was treated throughout her life due to being a Diclonii, and for being a cute anime girl. But we don’t feel sorry for most mass murderers or mass killers. I guess Ted Bundy and Dylan and Eric are exceptions with their huge female fan clubs but still, we rarely ever feel sorry for these people regardless of how bad life was for them.
2. Kouta forgave her WAY too easily (yes I know he said he’d never forgive her for what she did but he still pretty much ended up forgiving her). I mean for fucks sake, the dude still lovingly embraced her and ended up kissing her, the one who ruined his life by brutally slaughtering his family. It’s even worse when said murderer is your childhood friend. I don’t care how much I loved the person back then who did this, I would feel nothing but burning hot hatred for the person who murdered my parents or my siblings. I would have to hold myself back from murdering them if they somehow got off from their crime. I could never forgive them. Especially over a petty as hell reason as to why they were murdered, because the murderer was delusional in that her love interest spurned her for his cousin (SWEET HOME ALABAMA, ROLL TIDE). And I could sure as hell would never kiss them if said murderer was a childhood crush. The fact that Kouta still loves Lucy/Kaede (and not just Nyu, remember) is fucking laughable.
That’s just my take on it, though. If Lucy showed guilt for not only putting Kouta through that hell, but for also for killing not only Kanae and Kouta’s dad, but also the scores of innocents in general, then I’d be a bit more okay with this. But this in my eyes is just awful writing, having Lucy get off way to easily for her crimes. At least Kouta expressed hatred for Lucy in the manga (in the manga, Kaede and Lucy were complete separate personalities, while in the anime, Kaede and Lucy are the exact same person. Lucy has three personalities in the manga, and two in the anime).

I watched this anime in 2011. I am sooo sorry if I'm remembering it in a really wrong way, but I remember like in one scene (i think it was the bus scene when they were child) lucy was having a mental breakdown, then she said "Kohta, please kill me if i kill more people". And the other thing is, when Lucy escaped, Nana came to take Lucy back. Before the fighting starts Nana says "You've killed so many people" and Lucy says "No I did not". I mean, she is feeling guilty for what she did to people. She even told Kohta to kill her if she kills many people, IDK, I may be wrong tho. It has been almost 10 years since I watched it

Lucy is just one of the names of her personalities/alters. Due to the immense trauma she was under, her personalities split into 3.
Kaede: The lonely girl who was bullied, neglected, abandoned and abused. The stubborn but lonely girl who wanted nothing but love and acceptance. (Main host)
Lucy: The darker part of their personality, the one fully locked into dicloni instinct who has the killer intent. The main personality who killed Kouta's parents and killed so many others.
Nyu: The innocent, naive and sweet persona we all know
Honestly I remember being anxious all the time while watching this show because everyone was getting mutilated, even scenes like this I thought Kouta was going to explode lol
I locked away this memory a long time ago to avoid the heartbreak again. It still hurts like the first time... I just want everyone to be happy ffs...
People who regret doing horrible things in their lifetime, deserve a second chance. Or someone to help them heal on the inside. Lucy may have done horrible things: but she needs a friend and someone who can, all over again, give her happiness. A happiness capable of not making her feel like a monster. Kouta, thank you for loving Lucy. 😊

This is my favorite anime of all time and I was so disappointed with the manga, I really did not like it. The show cutting out Nozomi was a GOOD call! I hated that bitch lol.

This is how the manga should've ended. These 2 love birds having a happy ending. Maybe a timeskip into the future where they have kids. Kouta may be dense but he means well and will take good care of Lucy. This is my opinion, I personally think Lucy isn't bad. Trauma she went through was messed up and if she had loving parents in her life she would've went the right path. A lost child to troubled teen. I'd help her if I could. (Anime and manga needs a reboot)

I mean everyone is saying kouta should've ended up with her but i have to disagree here. Yes i understand the shit she's been through and i really do feel for her and i hoped she would've gotten the love she so desperately desired, but honestly it would've fucked my mind if Kouta ended up with her after everything she did to him.
No matter how much he loved her or what she has been through, THIS WOMAN KILLED HIS FAMILY she literally sliced them in front of him, and no matter how much you love a person, you could never go past such trauma.It's not like she betrayed him or cheated on him or did something that could possibly be mended over time, she literally chopped his sister and father in half, and while doing so she was 100% conscious and aware of her actions and what she was doing to him, but yet she still did it, this girl knew more than anyone what it felt like to have something you love killed in front of you, yet she didn't have an ounce of sympathy for the only person who stood by her and still consciously chose to kill his family in front of him. In my opinion there are things far more important than love, and him being with her would have traumatized him even more, cuz even though he loved her, everytime he would've looked at her he would have remembered what she made him experience. No matter what she's been through nor what she was born to do, this shit is unforgivable. I'm still baffled that he still kissed her after remembering what she did to him. I tried to hypothetically put myself in his shoes, and honestly if it was me i would've probably killed her at the spot and never would've forgiven her but well well this is merely an anime after all. I'm still shocked there are people that ship them together. Like yeah i don't ship him with his cousin either cuz that shit is gross, but i am glad he didn't end up with Lucy either because this way it's more realistic.

Yes, she's responsible for every murder she commits, but it was also the DNA voice in her head poisoning her thoughts and driving her to kill, telling her that Kouta never cared about her at all. This is inherent in the Diclonius species. At that point, when it seemed like the only good thing she had in the world was nothing but a lie, her hope crumbled and she gave in to that voice. Add to that fact that she herself was a very young, emotional, impressionable child.
She's absolutely still responsible, but I don't think it's fair to say her head was completely clear at the time. I also think that Lucy and Kouta can find common ground in the pain they've endured. And you could say Kouta's pain is because of Lucy, but if we're being completely honest, his pain is because of the people who tortured and abused Lucy and made her feel like she was worth nothing in this world.
I haven't even watched this anime but I've read on it. My gosh the feels. That poor girl. Now I could never forgive her for her actions but she needs some lovin. Why did you have to have an insestual relation ship with your cousin Kouta. I ship these two god dammit.
I could forgive her due to how she only does it due to what everyone else did to her. If you're nice to Lucy, you're safe. So basically the series teaches you if you treat people like shit, expect shit back. Lucy was innocent, but not being human, was tortured and turned into a murderer, and even then she kills to live aside from when she breaks down and kills some innocents.
In Japanese culture cousin does not necessarily mean blood relation, it can just be a term two people use for each other if they're very close.

They are actual cousins. Everything that I’ve read on it refers to them as such and while I’m not sure as to where. She apparently referred to his dad as uncle. Japan has different cultural acceptances in regards to cousin relationships though.
Luckily Kouta & Yuka don’t end up together in the anime. The entirety of it on Koutas side was most likely motivated by repressed emotions for Kaede. The only time he reciprocated was during the rain kiss and it was similar to him & Kaede in the rain as kids. Since Yuka’s the only girl he can remember, it’d make sense he’d confusingly associate those feelings with her. There’s subtle symbolism with the rain falling down the statues like a tear, referencing Lucy.
Even afterwards, he ignores Yuka’s wish to always be with him. And instead tells Nyu he’ll always be with her. He tells Yuka he likes her, but he tells Lucy loves her. Kouta & Yuka dont have any other romantic interactions, and there’s no reaffirmation of them being a couple. If anything the opposite happens when Yuka realizes Kouta always loved Nyu, not her.
So in the anime, everything emphasizes that Yuka serves as a contrast. Not an actual relationship. With Kouta and Kaede beginning a new, happy life together.

They are the same person and it's a metaphorical allegory. The duality of the soul. The Anima and Animus of the human soul. Lucy is the male's Anima./Female side that is connected to our mother earth's frequency.

actually that isnt lucy at the dor its nyu. notice lucy loved that music box kohta had when she died the box stopped but notice how nyu loved the clock.the clck started working because nyu loved the clock therefore nyu is at the door
