On "My Car Story" we're in Volo IL on 2-10-14.
We're looking at a 1946 Ford Grease Lightning Hot Rod car John Travolta drove from the 1977 movie Grease Lightning also featuring Olivia Newton-John.
Today I'm speaking with Brian Grams, Director of the Volo Auto Museum.

Shame it hasn't got the huge goodyear slicks on it that it wore in the movie. Love it anyhow, always liked it because it combines 30's style hot rod touches with 60s era customising....on a 40s body style!Good to see the car is still around and in good hands.

This was just a prop in the musical number,, the real "grease lightning" car is the white one
Rushdude2112 that's what I'm sayin . When I think about the movie I think of the white and the black cars be for this one .

This is Greased Lightning, the white car was actually called White Lightning.
The song is a dream of what the white car could be. The dialogue before the song is: "..this car COULD automatic, systematic, hyyyyydromatic. Why it's Greased Lightning!" Therfore, THIS is the Greased Lighting car.

I always kinda thought it looked so tacky with the oversize Fins in back, it kinda looks like a monster Mobile. I never seen a car with exhaust on top of the tail lights (now that is odd)

Don't shoot To sender, but they really ripped this guy new one, for saying the movie was all about that car,. When that car wasn't in the race, it wasn't at the drive-in, the grease lightning car,, but hey it's not my argument, and I don't want this gentleman thinking I'm starting something with him. I think the car is just beautiful,. It has everything to do with the movie

i loved the movie and still can see it once a year. this car is done amazing exept for 1 thing. they have use the wrong collor RED..... this was not the collor in the movie.
look at the poster behind the wall. you already see it was more dark.
this is ferrari red. and the car was more dark red.

How come in the end of the movie the paint looks more like a metallic Kandy red which looks deep even in sunlight where as this looks more an inferno red even indoors? As well as I believe the lightning bolts in the movie were decals. Looking at doing a paint scheme and having a hard time finding out what the original paint was actually. Any input would be appreciated.

The one in the movie had Goodyears on it
It had Firestone 500s on it. Looked to be wider wheels too.

[If] this is the original, it was not restored original, to the movie. If you watch them movie, the hood latch hole and associated structures are clearly visible, under the front of the hood. The front, on yours, is smooth.
Additionally, the headlights are different.
I'm not saying it's not the original car, I'm just saying it was not restored to the original look, in the movie.

The one in the Peterson Museum is a clone of the Grease Lightning. The Volo car is the real deal

It only "cool" because of the movie. If Grease never came out and you seen this car at Walmart you'd probably think "WTF? This is horrible! Who would spend that much to make this?".
