One of my favourite musicians. I log into his Facebook Live every week and he and his wife are lovely people. Thinking of attending next year's guitar gathering
That jam at 40 min. that Johnny and T.J. have been working on is just incredible and outrageously melodic!! Have listened to it A LOT. I am going to try and get a live skype with Johnny in the New Year. Cannot wait!!
I had my own "discovery" of him about 3 years ago and he totally blew my socks off, genuinely nice guy and a complete monster on the guitar! Definitely one of my favorites!
Can anyone transcribe the lick he plays at 5:35? I can't figure out the rhythm, and it's difficult to hear where the strong beats fall. He also plays a variation of the lick pretty soon after. Help!
@@GuitarGathering I have had tendonitis in both arms, and still do, but rest and Ice and heat do wonders. God bless and I do hope you get well soon. It forced me to change how I do a lot of things. It can be for the good.
@@BrianVallotton Hello Brian, Steve & anyone else with tendon problems: I know this video is not new so I hope your tendon situation has improved. I had some very bad tendon problems in my left hand to the point I was told by a 'top physician' that it would probably never heal well enough to play again. It took a few years but I did recover & have played guitar semi-pro & fully pro for spells since, for years now with no more tendon problems. I can't stress enough the importance of regular stretching, both for healing tendon injury & to prevent injury. Keeping in good general health helps of course. I know others who've had similar experience - stretching, careful, calculated, regular stretching, it really helps. Best to you.
Johnny changes from Musicman to Keisel and gets a problem with his picking hand. Compare the angle this guitar sits at to his musicman, the keisel sits much more horizontal compared to the MM. Just not hearing the fluid speed he Is known for, maybe not the guitar but the way it sits, even the old PRS used too hang at 45 degrees. Just sayin.
ThatGuitardedGuy , very sorry to hear that he is having problems with it. As a fan and having watched a huge number of his videos in detail, it struck me that the new guitar sits differently. In my experience, those sorts of playing position changes can cause problems or sometimes solve them. Good luck with it JH.
I understand what you're saying, but remember Johnny played a Tele way back, and his axis sport guitars from the MusicMan days are kind of Tele-ish. I guess what I'm saying is, (and this is from someone who's had the absolute pleasure of being able to play ALOT of Johnny's guitars), the only thing that's really different about the Kiesel model is the neck thickness. I find them a little thin, but I'm a bass player....what do I know?
why play the bass if you cant hold the groove??????? if you want to do that just grab another guitar???????? anyway everyone in there own world and no respect for traditonal playing and not johnny!! but the bass player and on the lead bass!!!!!! lol
That was Johnny's bass player at the time. Johnny invited him to be a part of the live lesson. It was a little tricky doing those types of songs without a drummer but Johnny carries it off. Glad you tuned in.
Johnny Hiland ROCKS!! and what a sweet nice gentleman!! Love Ya Brother
Johnny Hiland is legitimately one of the nicest dudes ever

Where is the lesson at?
He should try a Black Mountain thumb pick. Great invention, comfortable.
A Beast

TJ rules
Steve, what have you done to your wrist? Tendonitis?
I'd bandage my hand too.
I'm not playing after that guy EITHER!
:)
Yes, dealing with some tendon issues. It's slowly getting better but it's takes a lot of time.

Harry Palmer Thanks for these kind words. God bless you and all you love!
One of the tastiest players of all time. His eyes might be blind, but those fingers sure aren't.
Just imagine if SRV was still picking!
Damn, last few times they couldn't hold that groove. How come?
My favourite setting is the Johnny Hiland, which nobody can get regardless of guitar or switch position. Funny that
I get cubital tunnel syndrome. It sucks. No 3 hr gigs for me anymore.
He`s so Good and i`m such a chump. I`ve been playing foe 45 years and I still cant play...Sucks !

Actually, his hand issues started before the switch.....just sayin'

Johnny switches guitar endorsements like musical chairs. PRS, Music Man, Kiesel. Who's next? Btw that Kiesel headstock is horrible.
5 years with PRS. 7 with Musicman. Johnny has his own, very valid reasons for making the move to Kiesel.
probably waitin' for fender to knock on the door ;-)
@@NUJAKKCITIE Johnny was with Fender many years ago.
I wouldn't mind the headstock, but the body of that guitar looks like a chopping board without a pickguard.

Too much talking Johnny!Channel some of your talking into teaching.
Wannabe Ibanez headstock.
No.
Nobody wants to copy an Ibanez.
