Nothing short of magnificent, this Procol Harum classic is pure genius. The legendary Barrie James Wilson imo, is the most under-appreciated drummer ever. I loved his artistry from the very beginning, back in 1967. This is a nice tribute. RIP BJ 💖
Thank you, Jay. I love having several pieces of Barrie’s Ludwig drums that he used with the Paramounts and with early Procol Harum LPs and live performances.
Thanks, Larry. I bought several pieces of BJ’s kit on eBay after Roland Clare of procolharum.com told me they were up for sale. I repaired them rebuilt them and recovered them in new black oyster pearl wrap to match the original then added two Ludwig floor toms I found on eBay after searching for a few months. Both floor toms are from the mid 60s origin, handmade in Chicago Illinois by the William F. Ludwig Company.. I have signed certificates of authenticity from Gary Brooker who shipped me the kit from his home in London in 2016.
Check "What's New at This Website" on www.procolharum.com for October 8 of this year. I have done The Unquiet Zone from Procol's Ninth. Yes, I can do "Shine On" . I'll start making arrangements to get studio time and a videographer lined up to do a new video. Rich
Please tell us the backstory on access to the kit and its history, what restorations were done and by whom, and who owns the kit now. It was great...thanks for posting!!!
Wayne, I was notified by Roland Clare of Beyond the Pale that several pieces of this early Ludwig kit would be put up for sale to benefit the website. Since I am one of the many PALERS drummers Roland knew I would be interested in acquiring as many of these pieces as I possibly could. I did not get the snare but I got the bass drum and rack tom , ride cymbal and stand. I then searched for two Ludwig floor toms of the same dimension that Barrie had in the late 60s. I Purchased them and re-wrapped all of them in the black oyster pearl wrap that Ludwig used in the early 60s on so many kits. This Ludwig kit is identical to the one Ringo played for many years with the exception of the addition of a 14 x 14 floor tom . Roland purchased a bass drum case in London and shipped all of the parts that I purchased from Gary Brooker’s house and shipped them to me. Later, I received certificates of authenticity signed by Gary Brooker guaranteeing that the pieces I purchased were in fact owned by Barrie James Wilson, Procol Harum‘s signature drummer and percussionist. The kit is now in my possession. I do not use it playing live. I have a set of SONORS and I have a set of PEARLS that I play live with my other bands. The set of Ludwig‘s stays in its cases and I only bring it out to do videos or demonstrations.
i CAN'T GET ENOUGH Richard!!! Brilliant and soulful!!!!!!!!!!!
👍🌌🎇✨❣🙏ultra bravo!!! complimenti! Grandi Procol Harum!

Merci beaucoup!
Well done, Rich. It's a fun song to play on the drums. I never was able to achieve the 'regimental' hand grip. BJ would be proud!

A sincere thank you, DanJuel.
Fantastic--Bj would approve!!

It's BJ's drum set, but definitely not as good as BJ playing it
Yes, I agree.
