I had the privilege to listen to this great band when they performed in San Diego CA I'm 67 years of age and still listen to them and so do all of my daughters. For some of you young music appreciators, you need to know that that music other the W. Shade of Pale was never played in AM stations, only in FM. It was called Underground Music, so was Ten Years After, Uria Heep and other bands during the '60s. They refused Bob Dylan to appear on TV, It warms my heart to find out that U appreciate them
I saw procol harum at least a couple times, once in Berkeley in "71 when Salty Dog and just been released, but the most memorable time was back in the midwest in the 60s and forgive me if I don't remember a lot from then but I do remember that when their set started it was thundering and lightning all through their set. When the set ended, which was the last of the outdoor concert, the rain finally began. What a time that was!
@fivewaystreet Without M. Fisher composition Procol Harum would never reach global status and today would be known only to narrow group of music lovers.
@@markwroblewski6500True. Without his hypnotic organ melody A Whiter Shade Of Pale would not have taken England by storm and sold a million copies in six weeks.
This song was great to listen to, the sound is very good in that concert hall. I managed to get to go to this concert and still remember most of it, helps if you have the LP and listen to it a lot :)
This such a fantastic version of an incredible masterpiece. The drumming by Mark Brzezicki is amazing at the end. He played in some awesome Procol shows over the later years. I can't believe this concert has no DVD ?
Outstanding Masterpiece by a truly outstanding group! This live version with full orchestral accompanyment is SUPERB! I've always liked all of Procol's stuff since day 1, but always thought Walpurgis to be one of their all time true works of art! Thanks for the post! What the hell ever happened to "real" music and talent?!
This song is the way they concluded their first album and their live shows early on. This is a monumental piece of music, because it was the first "classical rock" composition recorded. Robin Trower's guitar solo on the original recording has to be listed in the top five rock guitar solos of all time, because of not only it's skill and soulfulness, but due to the bridge he crossed between classical music and electric rock guitar. Gary Brooker's spellbinding piano break (brilliant arrangement) is from J.S. Bach's Prelude No 1 in C major from his 48 Preludes and Fugues, Book I. This was pure genius that went largely unnoticed in the shadows of Sgt. Pepper .... Our radio and alternative media was not up to full-speed at that point.
A KOALA man Geoff is a great guitarist and loyal member. Mark B on drums was also fantastic. Dave Bronze on bass, I guess. Organist, I do not know who? When was this? Not Edmonton, as that has David Ball on guitar.
My first encounter with this song was 10 minutes after hearing it & being told the band I was in had to learn it for a Halloween gig…. This was 1968? It still gives me chills.
It’s a perfect Halloween song. Although Walpurgis Night was the night before Mayday there was also a Celtic tradition on what became Halloween night marking the beginning of the “season of dark”. An opening from the land of the dead appeared on the surface of the earth and the living, drunk on grog, had to take care to avoid being caught in it and sent to the land of the dead. This song captures the essence of the terror of that night perfectly.
I once saw the band play with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbiacan in London. They did 'Hotel Grand' 'A Salty Dog' and 'Grand Finale' amongst others. I will never forget it! DId anyone else here see that concert?
@bozeman302 Me too. I was 11 when I first heard Conquistador and I remember that distinct moment in time and space particularly well. Later on in life my interest went to classical music and nowadays I'm more into 15th century flemish polyphony. But I daresay that Procol Harum has influenced my musical tasts for the better. I am now (re-)discovering all Procol's sixties and seventies creations, and I can tell you boys and girls, this old man is having a ball !!!!!
Jeden z najwspanialszych rockowych songów bez słów! Mathew Fisher & Gary Brooker. One of the Best song without words! Krzysztof Logan Tomaszewski Songwriter Poland 18.02.2020
So sad that dear Gary died earlier this year - such a huge loss. We will all miss his love of Baroque music, especially of Handel, although here, of course, he plays a bit of Bach - Prelude No.1 from The Well -Tempered Clavier, Book 1. We were going to see them at London Palladium complete with orchestra in February, but, sadly, it was not to be. However, I'm lucky enough to have seen the band about 23 times, including three with Robbie, five with Mick Grabham and countless times with the great Geoff Whitehorn - one of the best-ever concerts was in Tallinn in Estonia, where Gary was a National Hero. The band was also great at the Rock for Horsepower concert at Kenney Jones' polo park in Surrey, which included John Parr, Judie Tzuke, Jeff Beck, The Who, Mick Hucknall and others (see my review on the PH site). The main organ theme is a set four chords and the guitar section, as Matthew once said, "was a chance for Robin to 'wig out!'" - never the same twice! The lovely and brilliant Geoff Whitehorn (about the nicest guy you're ever likely to meet) does a brilliant job here on this hallowed instrumental - it's NOT "a song!" Marvellous!
Como pude deixar tanto tempo da minha vida sem ouvir está banda e Gary? Tempo perdido, maravilhoso❤
Rest in peace, Gary Brooker. So sad to hear of your passing away, at age 76. 🙏

Grandi grandiosi Gary e i procol harum erano unici nel loro genere musicisti a tutti gli effetti oggi non esistono più band di questo calibro
Unici. Immensi. Immortali
Irresistible and moving performance!
I cannot be done better. My Heart - Brooker and Procol❤
My all time favorite song.

So do I, especially during the Bach interlude, before the universe collapses upon itself.
@@user-ft7tj9zz9xGreat description!
"before the universe collapses upon itself" What an accurate description of what happens here! Thanks!
Classic, Rock, Art.
No more words.
Infelizmente vou ter que comentar : Isso não é música isso aí é Um Verdadeiro Espetáculo. Maravilha Show.
Esta música é de outro mundo é linda de mais!!! As lágrimas estão escorrendo pelo meu rosto.É inacreditável.!!!!!!!
Let us remember Matthew Fisher fathered this masterpiece.
And B.J. Wilson at drums !
Best version as well.......Don's solo here is far too short.....Geoff gets the larger solo....typical.
MAF was the real heart of Procol in my opinion.

I am really curious about 2 idiots who dislike this masterpiece. Then how did they get here? Searching for Lady GaGa and by mistake lending here?
Lady Gaga is bar far not worst. She CAN sing and play piano.
Amazingly wonderful
