Critics were completely right about both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad....awful...awful...awful movies, batman v superman with its stupid plot, terrible characters and frankly awful pacing. And suicide squad with its cheesy musical cues, one dimensional characters, awful plot (even for a superhero movie), confusing tonal shifts (wants to be dark and edgy, but also wants to be light and fun) and laughable climax. Comic book fans should aim a lot higher if these movies are what they actually want from these classic characters.
Nooooo, don't you see? It's clear that every single one of the critics was bought off by Disney...especially all the critics featured on the Warner-owned Rotten Tomatoes site, so glad that a petition was created to get that site banned for being so biased against the films that I love through sheer brand loyalty! I agree with you on both counts, really poor movies.
"Comic book fans should aim a lot higher if these movies are what they actually want from these classic characters." Batman,Superman and Wonder woman were interesting especially villain batman.
It shouldn't matter who owns Rotten Tomatoes (in theory), they are a film review aggregator similar to Metacritic, meaning that they count hundreds of reviews from all media and average the score for any given film.
Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad both made lots of money...there's an audience who wants to see these movies, that much is undeniable. It's a shame then that that audience is being served up abject rubbish because the money men want to play catch-up to Marvel as fast as possible, rather than actually take the time to establish the continuity with care. Gotta cram 3 movies worth of big events and motivations into the one movie...it's the only way! Yeah, no wonder the movie's a mess. The first movie that's actually a part of this "Quick, copy Marvel's shared continuity" philosophy, and they've already had the death of Superman (and then immediately nullified the impact just before the credits rolled) and wasted a villain like Doomsday. No care, no thought, just wasted opportunities.
Absolutely. A movie with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman only made $112 million more worldwide than Deadpool, a much more niche character. When you say "comic book character", most average people will default to Superman or Batman...they're iconic in pop culture. To be THAT close to Deadpool reflects the quality of Deadpool, and just how badly DC have messed up right out the gate. Hopefully the movies get better, surely they can't get much worse?
As a DC comics fan, what makes Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad egregious was the wasted potential and the overwhelming sense that Warner Bros are trying to play catch-up with Marvel and going about it in such the wrong way that it physically hurts.
"I went in genuinely wanting them to be good" This is what irks me when people argue against scepticism and criticism. The best outcome for everyone is that all films are superlative. Marvel fanboys don't win anything - aside from being able to say "i told you so" - if a DC film is bad. Either way, I'm sure they would trade that for something that exceeded their expectations.
Batman v Superman was number 10 halfway through the year. I dont understand how it could make the same spot again. It seems as if one movie since was worse then any of the other bottom 10 BvS should have got kicked out.
Mark, is there a tv series that you've watched that you think would be great on the big screen? I can think of three: Vice Principles (the first episode of which has a cameo by Bill Murray, and stars Danny McBride and Walton Goggins); The Man in the High Castle, which is produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions and stars Alexa Davalos, Rupert Evans, Luke Kleintank, and Rufus Sewell; and the remake / sequel to Westworld starring Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Woods, Ed Harris, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, and Jeffrey Wright. Although your focus is on cinema, for some time now the crossover between cinema and television has been growing, partly because the quality of television drama has grown, and partly because serialisation allows a deeper story to be told. I'd say one of the first tv dramas to cross that threshold was Battlestar Galactica, especially the series finale which I think was actually screened in select cinemas simultaneous to its broadcast.
I enjoyed the ultimate cut of Batman v Superman quite a bit, although the theatrical cut is wobbly. Suicide Squad on the other hand I struggled with, can't say I'm a fan of that one.
The plots of both BvS and SS are the main issue. I enjoyed both, I will not lie, but they could've done so much more and much better for the actual plot lines. They had so many great stories from the source material to take inspiration from.
Oh Mark I am excited for this! My worst 5 of the year are 5) Greasy Strangler, 4) Xmen Apocalypse, 3) Bad Moms, 2) Girl on a Train, 1) (local indie movie) Reparation. With honorable mentions to Batman V Superman, Sausage Party, Kickboxer Vengeance, Demon, Bad Santa 2, Weiner Dog, and Suicide Squad
I know Dirty Grandpa will be at the top for Kermodes worst, but I genuinely found it hilarious in parts. Also, funny how later in the year De Miro had a go at Trump, when he was basically playing a version of Trump in the movie (the 'grabbing' version) 😂
Based on Kermode's views, the critics are out of touch. The fan response to the DC films has been about the same as the critic's response. Yes, there are people who like it, but the majority think of them as bad films. And as for the box office? Batman v Superman not breaking a billion when Captain America 3 does? The box office has been underwhelming at best.
Here's my list going by Chicago release dates. Also, I don't go out of my way to see movies that'll probably suck, so if something awful is missing from my list, I probably didn't see it. 10 - Free State of Jones 9 - Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 8 - Nerve 7 - Alice Through the Looking Glass 6 - Now You See Me 2 5 - The Brothers Grimsby 4 - Pride and Prejudice and Zombies 3 - Collateral Beauty 2 - Blackway 1 - Warcraft
It's the other way around for me. BvS was trying too hard to be deep and failed, SS was completely vacuous and dumb but at least it wasn't even trying.
I couldn't agree with you more with Batman v Superman. I wanted to be blown away by that movie, and I left so empty. And to people who were hyped out of their minds and felt their expectations were met, they're lying to themselves. You know you were disappointed.
It's like the Wayans brothers toped out after 'Don't be a menace..' and the first 'Scary Movie'. Those movies were almost on a Mel Brooks level of spoof and are still funny as it gets from start to finish. 'Dont be a menace..' especialy. That is easily one of my top 20 comedies. Everything they've done since Scary Movie has been near unwatchable and depressingly unfunny.
As a comic book fan I can say I agree with the critics when it comes to Suicide Squad. It's badly made, David Ayre can't write female characters and its dull. The movies advertising told us it was one thing and then when we went to see it it turned out to be just another tedious Will Smith film. I'll also state that for me to dislike Suicide Squad is hard. The bar it needed to get under for me to like it is so low you'd needed to dig just to find it and yet I came out hating it. For that to happen something very serious is wrong with it.
I wouldn't say BvS and Suicide Squad split critics and the public all that much. Yes, the lovers of those films were more vocal, but they had to be as the majority of film-goers - be they critics or not - hated them (as evidenced by the box-office drop-off). Suicide Squad did enjoy a slightly better time of it (again, from critics and not alike), but only because it was less dreary and the characters were a little more fun.
SUICIDE SQUAD did have the Jailbait Joker, and the 50 shades movie had the I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE poster. That alone should have freed them from the ten worst movies.
I think comic book movie fans want to see a film that looks like a moving comic book. I don't think critics understand how much the visual side of them means to the fans.
I'd predict either Gods of Egypt or Dirty Grandpa making his No. 1. As for myself, here are my least favourite of 2016: 10. Allied 9. Bad Santa 2 8. Grimsby 7. Fifty Shades of Black 6. Sausage Party 5. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie 4. The Angry Birds Movie 3. The Boss 2. Point Break (2016) 1. War on Everyone
I'd disagree with what Mark said about critics hating BvS but audiences enjoying it because it got big box office. This is inaccurate - it got big box office because it was a Batman and Superman film. It could have consisted of nothing more than two cats licking each other and it would still have made millions. Rather if you look at evidence of audience approval - it's Cinemascore in the US, ratings on IMDb and user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's terrible legs (in the US it made more money in its first weekend than the entire rest of its run), it becomes obvious audiences were NOT in fact enamoured with the film either.
***** Spoilers below: Reynolds is an FBI agent that dies early on, he holds information that can't be lost, the police suggest the thought of extracting that information somehow. And they eventually find a "rabbit" to experiment on which happens to be a guy with no empathic ability(Costner), they transplant a part of Reynolds character into the head of Costner. As the story progresses he slowly acesses the memories but also learns what it means to have empathy Not the best of movies sure, but I liked the idea and it was quite touching
I think in films like BvS and Suicide Squad( i.e. essentially blockbusters which are largely surface) ares specifically designed to entertain- thus being bored is a criticism
I feel you should form your own opinion when it comes to seeing movies. The problem I have with sites like Rotten Tomatoes is that as an aggregate they are too binary. You have to either love it or hate it and there is no middleground anymore for a film to be just ok. There is also the fact that fake reviews do exist (Sony pictures has already been sued for things like that.) I saw BvS and Suicide Squad and paid to see them and left disappointed by both. I want DC to have good films but I hated what they did with the character of Superman. They tried to cram 5 different stories into one film without earning it. I know there are those who like it and more power to them. It just didn't deliver the Superman I know and love from the comics. Conversely the critics panned the Warcraft film but I enjoyed it quite a bit despite its flaws.
I'm not any kind of film critic, I feel like I enjoy so many films that get shat on that my taste is actually rather awful. I'm a part of the regular, everyday audience, and I thought Suicide Squad was largely AWFUL. If there are films that speak for the idea that critics are out of touch with the general audience (which I don't think is really the case) they're certainly not Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad regardless of their opening weekends.
The extended version of BvS is the only version I saw and it still made me angry. In fact it's the only version that makes it clear that the photographer killed in the first few minutes is Jimmy Olsen.
Film Gob It's not that he got killed but how it happened. It's within a few minutes of his introduction without him even meeting Superman. Superman's BEST FRIEND is killed off without sharing a single second of screentime with him. And looking it up this was Snyder's idea of "having fun".
I completely agree with mark on suicide squad. That was awful. I however really enjoyed Batman v Superman. I personally don't think it's as bad as a lot of people were saying it is. I'm not a DC or Snyder fanboy by any means. I just liked the movie. It's certainly not perfect but I found it more interesting than Civil War (and that was good as well).
BvS might not be a great film but it's surely tons better than Suicide Squad and doesn't deserve to be put in the same place as if there were equal in quality which they are surely not
9 worse films than Suicide Squad is a pretty grim obit for 2016. thought it was awful, should have been less The Spandexables and more The Dirty Dozen.. Now there's a film worth a revisit, anti-sequel fodder.
Comic book movies these days are designed to make money mainly from people who think it makes them a geek to go and see them and say how good they are no matter how bad there are.
I'm surprised he put batman vs superman so high on the list! I was expecting it charting at least in his top 3. personally I enjoyed it but suicide squad, boy Margot Robbie should have been arrested for crimes against cinema in that movie.
as I'm getting older I feel I do well not watching worse films . I only seen batman and superman from the list so I been spared well. it was pretty poor except what's funny is that batman himself was rather good.
Cannot agree with Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman at 10, Suicide Squad was actually funny, and it is a cartoon, so that is the idea. Ghostbusters 2016 is probably the worst film I have ever paid to see so I would have expected to see that somewhere.
It's spectacle, that seems to be what the box office demands, the young movie-goer market has changed. Ben Hur MY GAWD how can you f-up one of the greatest stories in our literature, it has everything, it took genius of the highest order to pull that off. Awful awful awful. So how can Ben Hur not be number one. I'm scared
While BvS and Suicide Squad are both terrible, they're definitely not equivalently terrible...BvS is just meh. Suicide Squad actually makes me want to die.
You revisited Prometheus after the hype died down. I like Ridley Scott but he has made some poor movies. Re visit Batman vs Superman and please don't compare it to Marvel
He seems very salty that BvS and SS made people open their eyes to the stupidity that critics really are. 27% and 26% for them is absolutely ridiculous considering that Ghostbusters (2016) has a 73% "certified fresh" rating.
The percentage is just an overall "liked/disliked" indicator. Technically, a film could have a 5.9/10 critical average and have a 0% Tomatometer rating while another could have a 6/10 critical average with a 100% Tomatometer rating. If you look at the actual RT averages for each film you listed , BvS got a 4.9/10, Suicide Squad a 4.7/10 and Ghostbusters a 6.5/10.
Gent M I think he seemed quite reasonable. He did say it's all a matter of opinion so he seems quite open to other people's views, but personally he wasn't a fan. That's just how I interpreted what he said :)
The Movie Planet What EXACTLY was the point of your reply ? I said that only 26% of critics that reviewed Suicide Squad gave it a positive review. 4.7/10 against a 6.5/10 of Ghostbusters is still ridiculous as a score.
After watching Suicide Squad I though it was meh and not that bad. I am now convinced it's one of the worst, if not the worst thing I've ever seen. Just pure garbage. But at least we got "Rogue One", which is a great Suicide Squad.
There's nothing wrong with vapid, empty fun....Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman both forgot the "fun" part. SS tried to attach a veneer of fun through it's presentation and editing, but it failed miserably due to being so transparent with it, and the fact it was seemingly edited in a blender.
Paul Dennett Exacly! There's no charm. I'm not a fan of the mcu, but they do have some sorta charm. It feels like they threw in evrything I have about this generation into one film.
Batman Vs Superman was much better than Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad was flawed all around, at least Batman V Superman had some good bits and tried to work as a film. I mean the editing in Suicide Squad is laughable, even for a mainstream audience.
Personally I found BvS to be worse but that's because it made me angry with what it did with the characters. Suicide Squad was really poorly made but at least the characters were accurate to the source material.
I think there was a good movie inside the overblown mess that Snyder made, whereas Suicide Squad makes me really question how the film got through that many people and still got released.
Joseph Bullock Suicide Squad is a complete mess as a film there's no doubt about that but it isn't the insult to DC characters that BvS is. At least Suicide Squad doesn't shamelessly kill off an iconic member of Superman's cast for no reason.
Do i have to lay some smackdown about bvs:doj and sucide squad. Right dr k as much as I like is guilty of what has in the past accused others of. Not understanding a genre. Let's lay it out there bvsdoj and sucide squad are not bad movie or bad superhero movies. Anyone who thinks they are doesn't know what theya re talking about ina genre which containsa ll four fantastic 4 movies, superman 3, amazing Spiderman 2, green lantern, the spirit, batman and robin, steel, spawn (though I think tis badly judged) daredevil, electra,. Now thing is this movies were ok they introduced us toa group of villians while I accept people don't like the enchantress. I liked it how she got the power and her transformation. I dint like the pdestruction thing but I liked the team and I liked the bond they grew though I feel that was probably extended in original cut.BVS is not a bad movie jesse eisenberg was annoying but I though cavil was fine though missed used in the fgilm, liked afflack and I thought in the end it portrayed an battle of two people who dotn really talk to each toher finding oout theya re much alike.
unfortunately, kermode has become a human version of rotten tomato website... he is clearly targeting DC movies recently... we all know that Nolan's batman cant be re-emulated... having said that, batman vs superman and suicide squad were very adequate movies, at some points better than their counterparts in marvel. they couldve and shouldve been better but didnt deserve all the bad publicity they received
Never understood the concept of linking box office success with audiences enjoying a film. Box office success just means marketing success. If audiences were allowed to ask for refunds, "I'm sorry - I did not like this product. It wasn't as advertised."; then sure I guess you could link whether not audiences like a film by actual how much money it made.
Come on, Mark, you're an astute film critic. Apart from 'Frost Nixon', Ron Howard is a mediocre director, at best. So many instantly forgettable films, dull as dishwater.
Superman sucked in that movie

Gods of Egypt will be Mark's biggest loser.
Mastodan11 I feel it might be a toss between that and Nine Lives.

Nine lives hardly deserves to be in here; it's just too insignificant in every way.
Batman v Superman was number 10 halfway through the year. I dont understand how it could make the same spot again. It seems as if one movie since was worse then any of the other bottom 10 BvS should have got kicked out.

Thank god for Mark's relentless no-nonsenseness in the world. A good way to end a shitty year.
3:45 *Fifty Shades of Black
Suicide Squad does not deserve to be on the worst list, it's not that bad.
It was awful.
It was terrible

"Bang out of order!" Thought we were going to be treated with a Danny Dyer impression for a moment.
I lived BvS (although very flawed) but hated Suicide Squad (where I thought a decent movie was filmed but lost in reshoots and editing).
I only saw the extended cut of BvS but i enjoyed it. But i've heard its better than the original cut

5 - The Brothers Grimsby
4 - Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

As usual I agree with your list so far....
I didn't think Suicide Squad was THAT bad. It was certainly a complete mess, but not anywhere near as boring as Batman v Superman.
Suicide Squad is infinitely worse than BvS. BvS was just flawed but still entertaining
It's the other way around for me. BvS was trying too hard to be deep and failed, SS was completely vacuous and dumb but at least it wasn't even trying.

I really like Howard's work, but after his first Dan Brown film I have just decided to pretend this franchise doesn't exist.
It might just be a bit similar as with Ridley Scott: makes phenomenal movies, based on the right material.
When do you think Scott last made a phenomenal movie? I'd say it was around 1982 myself.
The Martian was phenomenal. My #1 film of 2015.
Alex Meyer
I do think the Martian is a case of a movie that pretty much everyone can enjoy.
That's something to admire at least.
It's like the Wayans brothers toped out after 'Don't be a menace..' and the first 'Scary Movie'. Agreed.
And they still think Man of Steel was good...

Fifty Shades of Black only at number 6, did Michael Bay release 5 films this year
I hadn't seen one of Mark's Top 10-6 film choices, but I have seen 4 of these. Oh dear!

BvS might not be a great film but it's surely tons better than Suicide Squad and doesn't deserve to be put in the same place as if there were equal in quality which they are surely not
Never watched any of those. I don't think I could stomach another super hero movie.
9 worse films than Suicide Squad is a pretty grim obit for 2016. thought it was awful, should have been less The Spandexables and more The Dirty Dozen.. Now there's a film worth a revisit, anti-sequel fodder.
For me, Suicide Squad was utter utter garbage. Just complete rubbish all the way through.
I completely agree and I haven't seen any of 'em (btw if Mark omits Ghostbusters from this list, then he is a dingbat)!
Finally top ten list of worst movies that has Suicide squat, absolutely awfulm movie!
Cannot agree with Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman at 10, Suicide Squad was actually funny, and it is a cartoon, so that is the idea. Ghostbusters 2016 is probably the worst film I have ever paid to see so I would have expected to see that somewhere.
No one can touch Batman after Christopher Nolan’s masterpieces
It's spectacle, that seems to be what the box office demands, the young movie-goer market has changed.
Ben Hur MY GAWD how can you f-up one of the greatest stories in our literature, it has everything, it took genius of the highest order to pull that off. Awful awful awful. So how can Ben Hur not be number one.
I'm scared
It's really disappointing to see what has happened to DC films. If I recall Kermode even liked Man of Steel a bit.
someone already has that username I think he liked the first two thirds of it.
yep, I too thought the first 2/3rds of the movie was great (minus the tornado scene).
While BvS and Suicide Squad are both terrible, they're definitely not equivalently terrible...BvS is just meh. Suicide Squad actually makes me want to die.
Time to make some popcorn.
I hope it's Dirty Grandpa.
Suicide Squad is so much worse than Batman v Superman. Batman v Superman was a bit of a dull mess, but Suicide Squad is just trash.
some right turkeys in there.
You revisited Prometheus after the hype died down. I like Ridley Scott but he has made some poor movies. Re visit Batman vs Superman and please don't compare it to Marvel
Deadpool would be my worst/most annoying movie of the year.
Benjamin - James lol coherent ? The whole middle section is super incredibly boring. And when it is not boring/terribly paced it is just plain dumb.
Ghostbusters is a better movie than both of them.
The Movie Planet What EXACTLY was the point of your reply ? I said that only 26% of critics that reviewed Suicide Squad gave it a positive review. 4.7/10 against a 6.5/10 of Ghostbusters is still ridiculous as a score.
I would like to put at number 10: The practice of splitting any tv, video or youtube and making people wait another week for the second part
I thought everyone loved Suicide Squad because of Margot Robbie. FanBoys were creaming themselves! (sarcasm)
***** please read the last word I wrote in my comment.
Andrew Devine GFY!
I know people who hated Suicide Squad but loved Margot Robbie's performance in it.
Alex Meyer so do I. Practically every one
After watching Suicide Squad I though it was meh and not that bad.
I am now convinced it's one of the worst, if not the worst thing I've ever seen.
Just pure garbage.
But at least we got "Rogue One", which is a great Suicide Squad.
At least the title is right. It did make me want to commit suicide.
Whats wrong with his face?
unfortunately, kermode has become a human version of rotten tomato website... he is clearly targeting DC movies recently... we all know that Nolan's batman cant be re-emulated... having said that, batman vs superman and suicide squad were very adequate movies, at some points better than their counterparts in marvel.
they couldve and shouldve been better but didnt deserve all the bad publicity they received
I think what Mark is referring to is things like audience ratings on RT and IMDB, which while not stellar were a lot better than the critics' ratings.
chicofoxo he does a whole section about it in his second book, using Pirates 3 as the example
I thought Batman vs Superman was better than Civil war, there, l said it!!
Gods of Egypt for #1!
Dirty Grandpa or Point Break for worst film
If Central Intelligence and London Has Fallen (the most racist film I've ever seen) isn't in the bottom /top 5 you need to quit your day job Mark.
Loved all these DC movies. I love being an endangered species
Ghostbusters, but I guess Kermode bought into the sexism meme
Not very bright, you are
DeAndre West Speak for yourself, at the very least try to order your sentences properly when making fun of somebody's intelligence
Glad I've seen nowt of em
Come on, Mark, you're an astute film critic. Apart from 'Frost Nixon', Ron Howard is a mediocre director, at best. So many instantly forgettable films, dull as dishwater.
suicide squad was 10 times worse than BvS
S C A R Y
Glad SS is on the list
unsubded finally.
Because he disagreed with you? Grow up.
suicide squad wasn't that bad.
yes it was, it was devoid of anything exciting or a soul and reeked of studio interference
Suicide Squad was THE WORST film I think I have EVER seen...
