Yes! On a side note, wasn’t there some lord (I’m American) who at the dinner table read about the king dying or something like that, and literally died from laughing?
MrRenegadePhoenix He thought it was rubbish, but that there was nothing particularly offensive about it. I don't think this one bothered him all that much.
He included in at #3 on his worst of the year 6 months ago. That same list had The Mummy and Alien: Covenant lower than Transformers but they still made it here. Curious.
marginally better, but stranger tides was better than at worlds end. If they bought the Pearl back then they should have also bought back some of the familiar cast like Mackenzie crook.
The truth is there's almost certainly worse films than fifty shades darker, transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean. Some low budget badly directed badly acted badly written rubbish. Unless Kermode trawls the depths of film releases his list will always be considered misguided. So what should he do? Make a list of films that he feels disappointed by or were bad to watch. And Covenant is a bad film. The plotting is terrible, the script just lazy, Ridley can't build tension at all, the subtext smacks you around the face with self importance while being incredibly cringeworthy... I could go on and on about how bad that film is. But I'll let Ridley prove it for me. The character backstory can be found in a trailer on UA-cam and not in the actual film. And to make matters worse like Kermode says he starts messing with Alien. It 100% deserves to be in the top ten and personally I'd have it much higher up.
So there are ten films that were worse than Pirates 5 and Transformers 5. I didn't think that was possible as Mark hates both franchises with a passion.
My Top 10 Rotten Eggs of 2017 1. Let There Be Light2. The Emoji Movie3. Rings4. The Snowman5. Fifty Shades Darker6. The Book of Henry7. CHiPs8. The Dark Tower9. The Mummy10. King Arthur and The Legend of The Sword Films that didn't make it (reasons why):•Monster Trucks (Didn’t make it) •Boo 2 A Madea Halloween (Didn't make it) •Ghost in the Shell (Didn't make it) •Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planet (Didn’t make it) •The Hitman’s Bodyguard (Wasn’t that bad) •A Cure for Wellness (Didn’t see it) •The Great Wall (Didn’t make it) •The Circle (Didn’t make it) •Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Wasn’t that bad) •Transformers: The Last Knight (Didn’t make it) •Justice League (Wasn’t that bad) •Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (Didn’t make it) •Father Figures (Didn’t make it) •Geostorm (Didn’t make it) •Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Didn’t make it) •Snatched (Didn’t make it) •Pitch Perfect 3 (Didn’t see it) •Jigsaw (Didn’t see it) •Daddy’s Home 2 (Didn’t make it) •The Bye Bye Man (Didn’t see it)
Well he has a film coming out hopefully this year called Radegund, which will apparently be a straight-up three-act film rather than a meditative piece. It depicts the life of Franz Jagerstatter, who refused to fight for the Nazis during World War II because he saw them for the evil bastards they were. As a result, he was arrested and killed. But since Jagerstatter was a devout Catholic, he was declared a martyr by the Church decades after his death. I bet Jagerstatter's faith will play a big part of the film, because Malick has explored Catholic spirituality a lot in his films, particularly The Tree Of Life and To The Wonder.
My worst films of 2017: 1. The Book of Henry 2. Transformers: The Last Knight 3. The Circle 4. The Emoji Movie 5. Sing 6. Assassin's Creed 7. mother! 8. The Mummy 9. The Bye Bye Man 10. Wolves at the Door I understand most of Mark's choices except Alien: Covenant and Song to Song which were both great. Explanations, longer list & my best of the year: ua-cam.com/video/JQom2ng8iic/v-deo.html
My top 10 worst 10-Cars 3 9-Snatched 8-The Dark Tower 7-Table 19 6-Geostorm 5-A Bad Moms Christmas 4-The Mummy 3-Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Long Haul 2-The Emoji Movie 1-Fist Fight
Anything that attempts to overload dialogue, character, or even cinematography with too much portent, too many thrown together intellectual concepts back to back, combined with a dull, plodding, navel-gazing pace with lots and lots of wry hipster references that set your teeth on edge. How about you?
Totally agree about Kingsman The Golden Circle. Such a disappointment that instead of building on the excellent first film it destroyed all that was good about it, I didn't enjoy one second of it and I really wanted it to be good. My worst film of the year.
I know at this point people and especially critics are probably tired of even mentioning Transformers but The Last Knight fought so hard to be on this list and really deserves a spot. I watched large parts of that movie with my mouth open in shock and disbelieve at the absolute nonsense unfolding in front of me. The whole messy cgi garbage final sequence alone was a new low even for this franchise.
Lol at 2:16 Mark whispers* “Which brings me to number three.” Throws arms out* “Heeey... mmm. It’s Song to Song, by Terence Malick. Conspirationally* “Remember the last movie by Terence Stamp, mmm, it was like Infinity by Calvin Klein. Well this is like, Interminable, by Terence Malick. Mmmm,” LOL
Worst: Dishonorable Mentions: The Circle, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, American Assassin, Tulip Fever, Ferdinand, The Greatest Showman, The Shack, Suburbicon, The Snowman, Table 19, Happy Death Day, Kidnap, The Mummy, The Boss Baby, The Great Wall, 47 Meters Down, The Belko Experiment, Geostorm 1. Fist Fight 2. Rough Night 3. The Emoji Movie 4. Father Figures 5. The House 6. Friend Request 7. Just Getting Started 8. Snatched 9. Unforgettable 10. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword 11. Baywatch 12. Wish Upon 13. The Foreigner 14. The Star 15. The Hitman’s Bodyguard
I'd love to hear his thoughts on Bright (2017), which was released on Netflix this year. A lot of people say the critics are wrong and there are a lot of 10/10 reviews being thrown around. For me though, I thought it was a complete mess; vacuous lead characters, arbitrary secondary characters, on the nose social commentary, a derivative plot and just a total disappointment based on its initial concept... I'd say it deserves a spot on this list.
Excellent. I’m really happy to see Gerard Butler (no acting talent, great abs though) and Russel Crow (can only play one role well which is “bad cop”) make this list. Their greatest achievement is to get paid so well for their terrible to average performances :) happy new year !
Favourite film I saw this year: I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore. A Netflix release yes, but the best film I saw this year and I saw Arrival.
That's because according to reports, Cruise took full control of The Mummy behind the scenes and called all the shots, kind of like what Will Smith did behind the scenes of After Earth.
I didn't see enough movies this year (47) to really have a top ten worst list but my trinity of wild mediocrity at best would certainly consist of Justice League, The Mummy and Geostorm in descending order. By contrast, Alien: Covenant is almost top ten of the year material for me, certainly the most aggressively under appreciated film alongside Valerian. Three watches later and it continues to grow, hey ho.
King Arthur - Legend of the Sword is missing from the final list. Bloated, CGI heavy mess with appalling performances, an awful script and toe curling cameos. Closest I've come to walking out of a film in years.
Very interesting that it almost in no way resembles your midterm report from August. No King Arthur, Transformers or Rings, even though you said they were worse than Alien Covenant!
THE SHACK was one horrendous stinker where a grieving father meets God, Jesus and the holy ghost - then stumbles on the set of 60's Star Trek - goes fishing - and forgives the murderer of his daughter.
The amount of people saying The Last Jedi is the worst or one of the worst films of the year is just ridiculous. It’s got flaws for sure, but it’s far from one of the worst films of the year? It’s not even the worst film released in December.
Great year for film. My faves, in no order: Julieta, Logan, My Cousin Rachel, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, The Shape of Water, Maudie, and Get Out.
The Limehouse Golem was an exceptionally good film that I'd happily put into my top ten. Olivia Cooke was blooming amazing in that film. Viceroy's House was also decent. The Man Who Invented Christmas was a beautiful film, which what is lacked it cinematography it made up for in story and performances.
worst movies of 2017 10) Geostorm 9) The Babysitter 8) Rough Night 7) Unlocked 6) Lego Ninjago 5) Death Note 4) Smurfs: The Lost Village 3) Transformers: The Last Knight 2) Arsenal 1) The Recall
I completely forced Song To Song out of my head. Well, it’s more like I completely forgot it five minutes after I watched it. Why is Terrence Malick just hiring good actors and meandering around Austin with Emmanuel Lubezki? What a complete waste. His films used to be ABOUT SOMETHING, but, my god, Knight of Cups and Song to Song feel like beautifully shot film student projects. He has become a parody of himself.
#poorKatieCassidy can't win in movies, can't win in TV... (Katie Cassidy is one of the actresses in Wolves at The Door, while TV fans might recognise her from the Arrowverse/Gossip Girl...)
Rather hard for a general audience to have a worst top 10, as we don't have to see things like 'Emoji Movie'. But, is Kingsmen 2, truly a worse film than Geostorm, certainly less successful than the first. Also a lot of questions about Guy Ritchie's King Arthur, though personally I haven't seen it. A little disappointed not to see Trainspotting 2, in the Top 10, but it has been a good year.
Yes! Kermode Dances! I will pay a hundred quid to see five minutes of that! I am sure a crowdfund could get that up to a hundred grand in an afternoon!
Biggest disappointment/moat disliked film - The post-modernist deconstruction of popular cinematic expectations, in an attempt to do something arty whilst wiping the slate clean for Disney to have free reign over a played out universe: It's Star Wars, The Last Jedi.Thought you'd be able to watch the new trilogy back to back some day? - Well, you can't, because every thematic plot piece set up from Episode 7 is gleefully inverted and handed back to the audience in Episode 8, with a "What, you really thought That was going to be a Thing!?".... "but, but, you spent so much time setting it up in the previous film!?"It's Star Wars, Episode 8. Deconstructed, reconstructed and rehashed, but not how you'd expect.
That Song To Song mockery: splendid. :D
Saekka Funny, but I loved Song to Song. :(
I've never seen this side to Mark before. I like it.
Song To Song mockery - better than the actual film :D
i was thinking the same haha, it's like he can't be arsed summarising the worst films.. just naff sums em all up.
Absolutely Hilarious,
Emoji Movie is number 2? Well played Mark. Well played.
Yeah.
Gave you the 66th "Like".
Let the Emo-gee "Movie" burn in Hell.
Did anyone else laugh as hard as I did at 2:17. Kermode coming through with the gold. lol
LowkeyLoki Memories of Robert DeNiro in Stardust :P
SergeantSarge Stardust Memories?
No one laughed as hard as you did. You laughed the hardest.
Yes!
On a side note, wasn’t there some lord (I’m American) who at the dinner table read about the king dying or something like that, and literally died from laughing?
Not as much as I laughed at 0:59
I like that he’s not *happy* about movies being bad. Don’t celebrate the failure of others.
Love the Terrence Malick bit lol
Did Mark forget there was a Transformers film this year?
maybe he didn't give a sh!t at this point
I think he thought it was a *relatively* good one.
MrRenegadePhoenix He thought it was rubbish, but that there was nothing particularly offensive about it. I don't think this one bothered him all that much.
It was in the bottom top 10 mid year-it's dropped out.
He included in at #3 on his worst of the year 6 months ago. That same list had The Mummy and Alien: Covenant lower than Transformers but they still made it here. Curious.
No fifty shades darker? No transformers the last night?
NO PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN? What madness is this Mr Kermode?
Iggsy81
True. Is it worse for a film to be disappointing? Like the 2nd Kingsman was. or just boring? Like flatliners.
Richard Batchelor bloody hell nothing satisfies some of you!!!
yes because it should have been better but wasnt
marginally better, but stranger tides was better than at worlds end. If they bought the Pearl back then they should have also bought back some of the familiar cast like Mackenzie crook.

Was really shocked to see Blade runner 2049 as your worst film of the year
Haha, nice try! :D
Russel crowe crossed with danny dyre in the mummy
Russell crowe is such old hat.. along with cruise. both are turds.
So there are ten films that were worse than Pirates 5 and Transformers 5. I didn't think that was possible as Mark hates both franchises with a passion.
jd899 Maybe he decided to go easy on them this year
Well we have had some pretty good ones this year too

It’s 2021 and the algorithm is totally ignoring Mark’s top 10 favourite films videos. 👍
Malick slam. Delicious. You're a hoot, MK. Thanks for another year of excellent film analysis. You're the best. Happy New Year.
Poor old Terence lost the plot
Where the hell was the Atrocity that was "Guy Richie's King Arfur"?!?
You mean "King Arthur Daley ('E's All Right)?"
Some of us rather enjoyed it. "Fun, but in no sense civilized."
King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword gave me a headache with all that shaky cam.
Happy New Year to you Mark!
I really liked kingsman, it's meant to be over the top and ridiculous, but I understand why he didn't like it
I missed ‘Snowman’ on your list...
Too true - The Snowman was appalling. I couldn't believe Michael Fassbender signed up for it.
"Terrence, make fewer films" 😂
Sucks I was looking forward to seeing song to song
Avi p You should watch it... Kermode is a non-genius.
I bet Jagerstatter's faith will play a big part of the film, because Malick has explored Catholic spirituality a lot in his films, particularly The Tree Of Life and To The Wonder.
I'm utterly shocked that CHiPs didn't make the list. Quite possibly the funniest Kermode review I've ever seen.
Whatever happened to King Arthur Daley ('E's All Right)?
Hi Mark, did you see Fear Moth?
Will you be doing a video on the best films that missed out on your top 10? No mention of Call me by your Name; Baby Driver; Dunkirk?
Rade Blunner baby driver is rubbish
InVinCibLe Dcuo Well Kermode put Baby Driver higher than Get Out in his ‘Top 10 so far’ earlier this year so I was surprised to see it omitted.
Reese's Pieces its was made to attract teens which is top sin to do
Reese's Pieces It was great fun, but I don't understand why critics were raved about it as much as they did
Jason fox i wouldn't go far to describe it as fun. It was one of those films you go see and forget it the next day, that shows how poorly the story is
My worst films of 2017:
1. The Book of Henry
2. Transformers: The Last Knight
3. The Circle
4. The Emoji Movie
5. Sing
6. Assassin's Creed
7. mother!
8. The Mummy
9. The Bye Bye Man
10. Wolves at the Door
I understand most of Mark's choices except Alien: Covenant and Song to Song which were both great.
Explanations, longer list & my best of the year: ua-cam.com/video/JQom2ng8iic/v-deo.html
Is it just me? Or does Kermode's Russel Crowe impression sound exactly like his Danny Dier impression?
I think it's his generic "COCKNEY GEEZER" accent.
WTF is Song to Song?
The one-liners used to summarise each film at the end make me wonder if Mark isn't turning into Barry Norman. And why not?
I'm surprised Emoji Movie wasn't number 1.
My top 10 worst
10-Cars 3
9-Snatched
8-The Dark Tower
7-Table 19
6-Geostorm
5-A Bad Moms Christmas
4-The Mummy
3-Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Long Haul
2-The Emoji Movie
1-Fist Fight
Mark should review all pretentious films in that style. Nearly spat my coffee all over the screen.
Anything that attempts to overload dialogue, character, or even cinematography with too much portent, too many thrown together intellectual concepts back to back, combined with a dull, plodding, navel-gazing pace with lots and lots of wry hipster references that set your teeth on edge. How about you?
A couple of his films yes, AntiChrist and Melancholia, overall.
Totally agree about Kingsman The Golden Circle. Such a disappointment that instead of building on the excellent first film it destroyed all that was good about it, I didn't enjoy one second of it and I really wanted it to be good. My worst film of the year.
Golden circle wasn't that bad
If that was the first film it would of been OK but after the actual first film it doesn't look great
I enjoyed The Golden Circle more than The Last Jedi thats for sure.
ST3ADY It wasn't great though
I know at this point people and especially critics are probably tired of even mentioning Transformers but The Last Knight fought so hard to be on this list and really deserves a spot. I watched large parts of that movie with my mouth open in shock and disbelieve at the absolute nonsense unfolding in front of me. The whole messy cgi garbage final sequence alone was a new low even for this franchise.
No Transformers? Michael Bay must be growing on you Mark
I love that Mark had to keep himself from cracking up during the Song To Song bit
I really liked Kingsman 2 - yes there was a lot of decisions made with that movie that I did not agree with, but it still was a fun time.
I haven't seen Song to Song. Fassbender and Gosling are in it, could it really be that bad?
No, it's not bad.
That perfume ad voice is actually terrifying, Mark.
Lol at 2:16
Mark whispers* “Which brings me to number three.”
Throws arms out* “Heeey... mmm. It’s Song to Song, by Terence Malick.
Conspirationally* “Remember the last movie by Terence Stamp, mmm, it was like Infinity by Calvin Klein. Well this is like, Interminable, by Terence Malick. Mmmm,”
LOL
Kingsman 2 doesn't belong on here. It's meant to be a fun, goofy Roger Mooreesque Bond spoof, and in that respect it wildly succeeded.
Worst:
Dishonorable Mentions: The Circle, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, American Assassin, Tulip Fever, Ferdinand, The Greatest Showman, The Shack, Suburbicon, The Snowman, Table 19, Happy Death Day, Kidnap, The Mummy, The Boss Baby, The Great Wall, 47 Meters Down, The Belko Experiment, Geostorm

2. Rough Night
3. The Emoji Movie
4. Father Figures
5. The House
6. Friend Request
7. Just Getting Started
8. Snatched
9. Unforgettable
10. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword
11. Baywatch
12. Wish Upon
13. The Foreigner
14. The Star
15. The Hitman’s Bodyguard
0:15 You really can tell he's dreading this. I gotta get caught up on the bad films to make my top 10 and oh boy I am looking forward to that!
In true form, whilst not disagreeing with the Dr's rundown, I have seen more films off the worst list than the best films for 2017.
I really liked kingsman! Emoji was my worst
He'll mention Wolves At The Door at every possible moment, especially with Tarantinos 1969 movie next year.
Hilarious - For someone who once idolised Malick now doesn't - great fun
It's ironic that people would blame Tom Cruise for The Mummy. He was the only watchable thing in it.
I got a headache from watching it.
Bit harsh on Kingsman, sir. Just a bit of fun, that. You obviously didn't see enough stinkers this year. Rings? Chips? Jeepers Creepers 3???
I’ve been doing that Terrance Malik impression since Knight of Cups and I love that Mark got it spot on.
Very interesting that it almost in no way resembles your midterm report from August. No King Arthur, Transformers or Rings, even though you said they were worse than Alien Covenant!
What happened to King Arthur? Transformers: Ancient Robot Aliens? Pirates of the Caribbean: How to beat a Dead Horse?
Ha ha! 02:17 to 02:37 Classic!
Wolves at the Door, so bad it doesn't have a wikipedia page.
This is the video we were waiting for
Kingsmen wasn't great, but the WORST? Makes it very difficult to take the rest of the list seriously.
THE SHACK was one horrendous stinker where a grieving father meets God, Jesus and the holy ghost - then stumbles on the set of 60's Star Trek - goes fishing - and forgives the murderer of his daughter.
XXX The return of Xander Cage and The Bye Bye man were awful.
I think this may be the first year where I've seen more of the 10 best films than the 10 worst!
Why kingsman???
Yep it wasnt bad or great it was ok
I’ll happily go to my grave loving The Mummy and Kingsman 2.
Your Song To Song American accent is brilliant
Song to Song is my #1 best of the year. Still several left to see, but I expect it will remain in the top 5
Song To Song is a masterpiece compared to these other films. I'll gladly watch it again over the others.
No Pirates? Or Transformers?
Song to song was actually pretty good
Agreed.
The amount of people saying The Last Jedi is the worst or one of the worst films of the year is just ridiculous. It’s got flaws for sure, but it’s far from one of the worst films of the year? It’s not even the worst film released in December.
I actually loved Julianne Moore in The Golden Circle.
Great year for film. My faves, in no order: Julieta, Logan, My Cousin Rachel, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, The Shape of Water, Maudie, and Get Out.
The sound mixing on this video is very poor; trailers are too loud, Mark is too quiet..
completely agree with kingsman
The Limehouse Golem was an exceptionally good film that I'd happily put into my top ten. Olivia Cooke was blooming amazing in that film. Viceroy's House was also decent. The Man Who Invented Christmas was a beautiful film, which what is lacked it cinematography it made up for in story and performances.
King Arthur: Legend of The Sword, surely this could have had a joint mention as you did in your top 10/11
worst movies of 2017
10) Geostorm
9) The Babysitter
8) Rough Night
7) Unlocked
6) Lego Ninjago
5) Death Note
4) Smurfs: The Lost Village
3) Transformers: The Last Knight
2) Arsenal
1) The Recall
Russell Crowe won an Oscar for a character using an English accent 😂
Where's The Snowman?
I cannot believe Kermode found 10 films worse than Transformers and Fifty Shades Darker.
Why is it i would always rather watch kermodes worst films of the year than his best lol
Mark went completly nuts in this and i love it
Finally. My God speak about stretching things out
I completely forced Song To Song out of my head.
No Pirates or Transformers. The Doctor must have decided not to waste any more air.
I want Kermode to watch "The Amazing Bulk" and provide live comments.
I feel like he should’ve swapped Kingsmen for Transformers.
"Interminable by Terrence Malick." XD
I am genuinely surprised Transformers: The Last Knight isn't in the list.
This year deserved a Top 20 Worst Films of the Year....
The mummy was pretty good for me but I understand why people didn't enjoy it
Did he watch The Snowman?
Damn, Russell Crowe’s british accent really haunted him...
I didn't like the new Kingsman either but I was pretty surprised to see it in the top 5 worst tbh
No mention of the last Jedi seems kermode not being totally honest here
