Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), the youngest son of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), decides to save his family and eliminate the Corleone family's most dangerous enemy. In a poignant moment, Michael, the youngest Corleone son, says a sad and touching farewell to his older brother, Sonny Corleone (James Caan). This will be the last time they ever see one another, as they both face an uncertain future.

Sonny got up and came to stand in front of Michael. He shook his hand. “OK, kid,” he said, “you’re on. I’ll square it with Mom your not seeing her before you left. And I’ll get a message to your girlfriend when I think the time is right. OK?” “OK,” Mike said. “How long do you think before I can come back?” “At least a year,” Sonny said. Tom Hagen put in, “The Don might be able to work faster than that, Mike, but don’t count on it. The time element hinges on a lot of factors. How well we can plant stories with the newsmen. How much the Police Department wants to cover up. How violently the other Families react. There’s going to be a hell of a lot of heat and trouble. That’s the only thing we can be sure of.” --Mario Puzo's The Godfather Novel
The Godfather is a 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo, based on Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel of the same name. The film stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, and Diane Keaton. It is the first installment in The Godfather trilogy. The story, spanning from 1945 to 1955, chronicles the Corleone family under patriarch Vito Corleone (Brando), focusing on the transformation of his youngest son, Michael Corleone (Pacino), from reluctant family outsider to ruthless crime/street boss. Paramount Pictures obtained the rights to the novel for the price of $80,000, before it gained popularity. Studio executives had trouble finding a director; the first few candidates turned down the position before Coppola signed on to direct the film, but disagreement followed over casting several characters, in particular, Vito and Michael. Filming took place primarily on location around New York City and in Sicily and was completed ahead of schedule. The musical score was composed principally by Nino Rota, with additional pieces by Carmine Coppola. At the 45th Academy Awards, the film won Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Puzo and Coppola). In addition, the seven other Oscar nominations included Pacino, Caan, and Duvall for Best Supporting Actor, and Coppola for Best Director. Since its release, The Godfather has been widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, especially in the gangster genre. It was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1990, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and is ranked the second-greatest film in American cinema (behind Citizen Kane) by the American Film Institute. It was followed by sequels The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990). (Wikipedia)

What stands out to me in this scene is how we human beings take things for granted. Neither brother realized that would be the last time.
Even worse, most people are so set in their ways that when something is not right, they do the unwise thing such as hold to what they have always known rather than accepting that they must change if things are to be better, but their own insecurities will not permit this.
Lord, teach me to number my days and apply my heart to wisdom.

Stop with the stupid dramatics. Michael needed to kill Sollozzo in order to save his father. End of story.

@yesterday, man you need to develop some prudence. You missed my whole point. You must be one of those type who doesn't care about the people in your life, you pull them out of the coffin at their funeral to apologize, or you are at the cemetery days, weeks, months, even years after their departure with regrets. Why? You took life for granted.

The only flaw in this movie is that Michael has to be taught how to kill or even handle a gun. He served in the Marine Corps in WWII. In the movie, he should have taught everyone how to kill. It's a fatal flaw that, as a military veteran, it hurts to overlook. Otherwise, the movie is beautiful.

@Chris, being a veteran myself, I am at liberty to say this: I think that you are reading more into it than what's there.
Second, in my mind they were teaching him how to do it, i.e., dispose of the weapon in their world.
Third, I think that the only part that they overdid it, which Michael sarcastically remarks, is dropping the gun afterwards; however, if you recall, he was walking away from the table with the gun still in his hand, became conscious of it, and finally dropped it, so he needed that training, even if it was just the mental component.
Why? Being an infantry man as he was, we are taught to always keep our weapon in arm reach. Dropping it in their world is contradictory to that.

I think you make excellent points. As Michael said, Clemenza told him many times to drop the gun, but he forgot. Also he was told to do two shots to the head each - that didn't quite happen.
I guess telling isn't enough, you have to practice. The closest a soldier would come to a situation like this would be in special forces and they practice their stuff over and over again.
So Michael as an ex Marine officer would have been very good at landing on beaches and taking objectives, but assassination is a whole new skill.
So I think you're completely correct
