Recycling K-Cups... As Shoes?! | Silly Sustainability

- K-Cups have made our morning routines wonderfully easier, but we know that they create a lot of excess waste. That's why Andy from @htme jumped on the opportunity to recycle them into something we all need: shoes!

One thing you could do, is to make the sole of the shoe the only part which uses recycled plastic. Most shoes use fabric or leather for the sides and top of the shoe.
If you really wanted to make it 100% out of reused plastic make the hole of the extruder smaller, to get a plastic string and weave together some kind of mesh.
I used 2 of these at work every day for a while. Eventually I realized just how much waste I was producing, so I got a refillable container that I could just fill with bagged coffee.
Yup, this is the way to go. Typically costs half as much as a pod as well!
Get a grinder and roasted beans you usually have a better coffee experience as well.
You could just make Storm trooper armor with that. If it lacks flexibility use it in an application where rigidity is ideal.
I'd recommend seeing if you could make super thin threads of plasic and try and make fabric out of it to give it some flexibility back
Ok, so maybe not a functional shoe, but definitely a work of art as are many of the things I have watched you build. As a side note, there was recently a court case against Keurig in Canada. Keurigs advertising stated that Kcups are 100% recyclable in Canada. Turns out this is not true. Keurig had to pay a fine and print retractions accross the country. The best plan is to try to stop using single use plastics. Difficult for sure as plastic is so ubiquitous.
A really cool way to do the top would have been to let the plastic flow into a strand like thread and see if you could weave it like other polymer threads
Super clever! Underrated comment.
This silly sustainability series is great, please keep the episodes coming!
Maybe extruding a line of plastic and stretch it out into a thin thread. It could be woven like cloth and sewn or glued.
Good try. Thanks for sharing.
Just shows with a bit of imagination what's possible.
Right tools help.
Love to see more idea's on how to melt plastics safely and turn them into something else that's usable.
Just a thought, rain boots instead of tennis shoes maybe?
you should take another shot at this. but use plastic bags for the "fabric" and a more malleable plastic for the sole.
When making the shredder I would have used a worm drive because you would get more torque and less problems. At least that is what was used on all of the shredders I've used.
I love it! I betcha, with this idea, you can dance while drinking coffee and wearing it!!! If you know what I mean!!
show more episodes about the shredder and the extruder.
ive been working on recycling plastic, for 3d printing, and any and all info is helpful.
I think you could very easily make some woven baskets from those plastic strands
The obvious solution would be "buy coffee maker with a grinder, not this overpriced capsule bullshit"
Makes a nice shoe sculpture. I bet your feet would be bloody as hell after wearing it for 10 minutes. haha
How much for the foot cast?
Time to call Ben Heck about 3D printing
Can't get it on your foot so in what way is it a shoe??
Okay, c’mon! That’s a sneaker sculpture, not an actual sneaker. But hey, I still loved the process so thank you!!! …more please…
I feel like plastic soles are a great way to create a lot of micro plastics...
Dude imagine wearing this and each time you put a step forward it sounds like chewing potato chips
I have always used the reusable cups because I drink to much coffee to justify paying that much and they are incredibly wasteful
Buying coffe like this is so stupid
Seems to me that he should have made clogs.
So 2 socks and that might actually walk
Seriously though if the thing is gonna be rock hard you should have just injection mold the whole thing.
Okay i am buying an extruder
👏👏👏👏👏
You could make them in the form of wooden clogs.
❤❤❤
Very useful for 1 legged men
K-cups are terrible for the environment and should be boycotted.
Agree that they are not environmentally sound however, I enjoy this attempt to work w the waste. Could sheets of melted pods be pressure rolled out?
2/10
