I read that you only have an engagement party if someone offers to throw you one. So if your family or friends don't offer, you don't have to throw one yourself. The bridal shower is something the women in your family and/or bridesmaids put on for you. You don't have to have one but it's a fun way for the women from both families to interact before the wedding.
