Shiv Chant is a traditional poem in the praise of Lord Shiva, written by Ali Mardan Khan, the Kurdish governor of Kashmir appointed by Shah Jahan. As the folklore goes, one night while Ali Mardan was strolling around Shalimar Garden he had a vision of Lord Shiva. He went on to write about his experience which took the shape of a beautiful Persian devotional poem.
सच है ये, भगवान शंकर थे वो! महेश्वर!
उन्हें देखा मैंने उस रात, जग के सम्राट!
सीने पर लिपटी शेर की खाल
हाँ, उस रात दिखा मुझे शिव का रूप विराट
हमान् अस्ल्-ए महेश्वर बूद्,
शब् शाहे किः मन् दीदम्।
ग़ज़न्फ़र्-चर्म दर् बर् बूद्,
शब् शाहे किः मन् दीदम्।
Verily he was Maheshvar,
The king I saw by night.
Lion skin on his chest,

उनके बाएँ, पर्वत की पुत्री, पार्वती - उमा!
उनका तेज सौ सौ सूर्यों के उजाले से चमकीला
उनका आधा चाँद बना शिव का मुकुट
उस रात देखा मैंने मेरा देव, छबीला
उमा अज़् सू-ए चप् बिन्गर्,
ज़ि सद् ख़ुर्शीद् ताबाँ-तर्।
हिलाल-श् ताज् बर् सर् बूद्,
शह्रयारे किः शब् दीदम्।
Lo, Uma from the left,
Brighter than a hundred suns.
Her crescent moon his head's crown,
The good lord I saw by night.
हथेलियों में उनकी स्वर्ग से उतरा जल
शिव थे नंदी पर विराजमान
उनकी बरछी, एक घंटी, और कमल
उस रात, आमने सामने, देखे मैंने भगवान
ब-दस्त-श् आब्-ए कौसर्
नेज़ः ओ नाक़ूस् ओ नीलोफ़र्।
सवार्-ए क़ुल्बः-ए नर् बूद्,
शह्रयारे किः शब् दीदम्।
Heavenly water in his hands,
And a spear, a bell, a lotus;
Riding a bull was he,
The king I saw by night.
मरघट से चिता की धूल समेटे
गले में फुँफकारते नाग लपेटे
वो जो कहीं वास करते भी हैं, और नहीं भी
वो शिव थे मुझे उस रात दर्शन देते
लिबास-श् गर्द् अज़् मुर्दन्,
ज़ुन्नार-श् मार् बर् गर्दन्।
मकान-श् लामकानी बूद्,
शह्रयारे किः शब् दीदम्।
Dust from death his garment,
A neck-snake his holy cord,
His abode was placeless-ness,
The good lord I saw by night.
जीवन और मृत्यु, जो होगा और जो होना है
नियति, शक्ति, भाग्य, जीवन की हर बात
सब जिनके आदेश पर हैं चलते
देखा मैंने उन भगवान शिव को उस रात
हयात् ओ मौत्, तक़्दीर् ओ
क़ज़ा, क़द्र ओ ख़ुदावन्दी
ब-फ़र्मान-श् मुसख़्ख़र् बूद्,
शब् शाहे किः मन् दीदम्।
Life and death, fate and judgment,
Fortune, providence, and might.
Were by his command conquered,
The good lord I saw by night.
उनके तीसरे नेत्र से निकलता
सत्य के सूरज का उजाला
मैंने चूम ली उनके पैरों की धूल
भगवन को देखने का सुख जी डाला
ज़ि चश्म्-ए सिव्वुम-श् हर् दम्
शुआ-ए शम्स्-ए हक़्क़् आमद्।
ब-ख़ाक्-ए पा-श् बोसीदम्,
शब् शाहे किः मन् दीदम्।
From his third eye always came
A ray of the sun of Truth,
I kissed the dust of his feet,
The good lord I saw by night.
