      +Rebekah Brunson This is how Christianity is supposed to be.
      1. Love everyone first
      2. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
      God is the only one who is allowed to or should judge.

      If you stand by that, and are able to use scriptural references as a means to support this argument, can you please explain paul in 1Corinthians 5, and James in his last two verses of chapter 5, and Isaiah in Isaiah 5:20? What about Jude in his opening few verses?

    • @ofallmyintention9496
      @ofallmyintention9496 8 років тому +5

      Nathan Baker In 1 Corinthians 5, Paul says that it is not his business to judge anyone outside of the church in general. He says to 'expel the immoral brother' after warning a 'divisive person twice.' There is a difference between loving someone and agreeing with them. So, yes, I stand by loving anyone no matter if you agree with them or not.
      James speaks of prayer in a righteous manner, I am not sure which correlation you are meaning to enact...could you be more specific?
      With the text in Isaiah, there is a difference between knowing whether something is wrong or right, and then judging someone for it. No one is to judge, except God. Read Jude 9, when Michael says to Satan, 'The Lord rebuke you.' Not, 'I rebuke you,' because even he knows that God is the only one who can do such. Again, there is a difference between knowing right and wrong, and reserving judgement for He who is worthy of judging.
      I will also reiterate the same for the Jude reference, I guess--even though I see no reason to. Again...Jude realizes what is right and wrong, but he is saying that one shouldn't sin simply because they know that God forgives. For Jesus, when He healed and forgave people while on this earth, He said, 'leave your life of sin.' Just because being a Christian means that you should be merciful doesn't mean that sin is right.
      It's pretty simple. No one should be a judge of others; that is not our place. If someone is immoral, you and I have no business judging them, but that doesn't mean that we have to indulge in their time and efforts. It seems like "we are" simply becoming redundant of the same principle. Any questions?

      Adam XYZ Of course I would love to clarify. Allow me to agree with you first in that Love is a must in all cases when dealing with the world. In ministry, the first (and sometimes only) thing I tell people of the world is that Jesus Christ loves them. This being understood, the message of the gospel does not end here. It sounds good to leave it there, but if we do, we are changing the gospel of Christ. “There is a way that seems right to a man, but it leads unto death”. We must not preach a gospel that sounds good by society’s standards (this was not the pattern we see in the bible) we must instead proclaim the gospel according to what Christ taught, and we can use the apostle’s writings as a guide also. I love the book of Acts specifically- in it you see Christians going radical for Christ, and the faith spreads like wildfire, but they never “tip-toe” around people’s feelings.
      Your reference to 1 Cor. 5 is correct about not judging the world. I’m talking about the Church, and the Church’s complacent position on homosexuality. It is wrong. It must be understood as wrong. We do not hate them, we mourn for them, but it is still wrong. If they ask us what we think, we tell them it is wrong. We did not decide this, God did. And when Paul talks about people causing divisions, that is another passage, just so you know.
      James 4:4- ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that friendship of the world is enmity (to become enemies) with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world will be an enemy of God.
      James 5:19-20- brethren, if any of you do err from the truth and one convert him; let him know, that he which coverteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death and shall hide a multitude of sins.
      Those were my two verses in James. Both emphasize the urgency to not associate with sin but rather try to turn people from it. If you have gay friends, and you haven’t told them what the Word truly says, you are not showing them love, because you allow them to live in their sin apart from Christ. You may disagree with me, but I urge you to base your opinion on scripture instead of worldly opinions.
      Isaiah is very specific and his warning apply to us today. If we turn a blind eye to wickedness and do not acknowledge it as wrong, we are essentially blessing it off as good.
      Jude is clearly condemning people in his writings. He even calls them “godless”, do you think that isn’t a judgement on his part? Of course it is. His reference about lucifer and michael was showing us not to speak about the Spiritual beings that we don’t understand. He stands on the Word of God and tells that to others, and in a sense this is exercising judgment.
      The scriptures clearly command us to reveal truth to others. I do not judge. God’s Word has judged. If I read it to people and it’s convicting, that’s too bad. If I tell someone that what they are doing is displeasing to God, that isn’t wrong at all- rather it is loving. I do not do it out of hate or pride. Rather, the spirit in me compels me to try to reach people for sake of Christ’s love.
      Now we are not the final authority, nor is it our place that we CONDEMN anyone. That is God’s place, but if we sit back and “tip toe” around people’s feelings, we are adding to the problem. We must stand on the Word of God and love others enough to tell them the truth they NEED to hear. If you aren’t doing that, you can’t honestly say that you love them- and you can’t say you love God either. That’s a hard truth, but it’s what we can derive from the Bible, and we must live by it. Be blessed.

      Adam XYZ you got it messed up bro. Jesus says 1. love God with all your heart, mind, soul, strength. Then 2. love your neighbor as yourself. It's not Christianity if you start off any other way. Loving people is equally as important as loving the truth.

    • @ehdforlife
      @ehdforlife 6 років тому +15

      Tony Teichroeb You missed a key element. Jesus said, "Go and sin no more." Why, because sin separates from God. God loved us enough to send Jesus to save us and not condemn us. But he said God is the judge, and he said you need to flee from sin, why? Because sin continues to destroy us, not heal us. Only Christ and the blood of Christ can heal us, and only when we seek him, ask for forgiveness, and turn from our sins will we be forgiven. That is all sin. Why does God, our father want is to stop. Because he knows sin leads to hurting and eventually death. God loved us enough to say, "Stop."

      @@thunderballz74 Is your concern with the lack of clothes and behavior, or with the fact that it's LGBT+ people? Please don't believe that gays are trying to change your children. As Garrett so correctly pointed out, people don't choose to be gay. It's also not effective to change someone's sexuality. Even when people specifically try to stamp the gay out of their children they don't succeed and just wind up alienating their children and making them feel miserable. If you can't change people's sexuality when they have every incentive to change, from family and social acceptance, to religious belief, to fear of violence, you're not going to change people by having a parade that a child might see. Plus, many LGBT+ people have had to suffer because of people wanted to change them; if anyone should understand that trying to change someone's sexuality is wrong and unproductive, it's LGBT+ people.
      I hope that you will support your son if he one day tells you he's LBGT+. Garrett is 100% right on this. You might believe that it's a sin. You might not understand how people can feel that way. You might worry of what your family, friends, and community will think. At the end of the day, though, LGBT+ people are just people and deserve all of the love and respect that should be shown to any person.

    His opinion on gays doesnt revolve around if its wrong so much as its about defending the people who are clearly being mistreated and unfairly persecuted. Any human being not willing to own up to the injustice, internal or external, is in the wrong. No excuses.
    Part of his ministry includes helping LGBT individuals have shelter, clothes, etc. because they have been treated poorly for a status that falls short of a standard, which in turn gives no one a position to preach any sort of Jesus story to them. The idea that there even needs to be a clear standing on subjects like this piss me off because these events dont neccesarily have a direct cause, its a worldview already formed from a lifetime you cant understand.

    I'm a homosexual and want to thank you Tim for sharing this on your platform, and Garrett for intelligently discussing this topic, drawing from his own experiences. The discussion is thought provoking. I'm privileged to come from supportive family and friends, and I would argue the LGBTQ community needs to reciprocate the respect in other cultural and religious beliefs.
    I spoke about this a little in a reply to another comment, but I'm friends with a Mormon family who I suspect is uncomfortable about my sexuality, but has never degraded me for it and in fact welcomes me into their home for dinner or to chat. We may not understand our different sets of beliefs and origins, but we *do* understand that those things don't stop us from being respectful to another human being.

  • @taylorchristmas601

    Eloquently spoken, Garrett. This has challenged my own heart and mind toward the whole "debate". I think it's important to be conformed to the image of Christ and what God's Word says about sexuality, sin, brokenness, etc. But most importantly, our love for God's creation (i.e. other human beings) should be an overflow from the love that Christ showed us on the cross. And that should naturally manifest itself in humble self-reflection, as well as self-sacrificial love toward everyone, no matter where they are at on their journey. When we point people to Christ, THAT is where transformation, renewal and healing begins - not in heated apologetic debates.

    Let me ask this. If someone is a homosexual before they come to Christ, and remain a homosexual after coming to Christ, are they really changed, or just too stubborn to acknowledge that it's sinful? Does a murderer keep killing people once he becomes a Christian? Does a former alcoholic that is now a Christian go back to being an alcoholic? Proverbs 26:11 says "As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly." Jesus even told the woman caught in adultery described in John 8, whom several people wanted to stone, to "go and sin no more."
    I understand what Garrett is saying, but if he isn't implying that a man being attracted to other men is as natural as a man being attracted to women all his life, then how else can it be interpreted. I agree with loving one another, but that includes gradually letting them know what is and isn't acceptable in God's kingdom for those wanting to be part of His family forever. if being gay and a Christian was commended by God, then Paul the Apostle would not have included homosexual behavior in 1 Corinthians 6 as being one of the actions that would deny someone access to heaven. If you fornicate (have pre-marital sex), steal, slander, practice prostitution, worship a false god, or indulge in homosexuality, and think you can get to heaven without repenting of 1 or more of them, you're only deceiving yourself.

      Try to understand,that I love my homosexual friends and family,but it’s not a stretch to not see them as sinners.
      They are sick and need God to correct them.
      It is not judging,God has already condemned these actions.

      In any terms, Paul calls the church to bring sin to the attention of other believers personally. If this has already been done, and the sin persists knowingly, the church is called to 'expel' the immoral brother. But, in terms of non-Christians, the church has absolutely no place condemning or hating non-believers. This is the same with any sin: if a non-believer is unfaithful to their spouse, the church has no business butting in--but, if there is unfaithfulness in the church, it should be brought to light. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 for clarification.

      I'm not trying to argue... But when you openly judge others or sin in every day life, which everyone does... Then that means you're going to hell too, right? Last time I checked, if someone accepts Jesus as their savior then they're saved, regardless of sin. That's actually exactly why Jesus died on the cross, for all us sinners. As Garrett said, to make a hierarchy of sin is pretty ridiculous. All sin is sin the eyes of God

      Hello my name is Alec and I'm a human being and I am also homosexual. That being said I did not choose to be gay the same way that you did not choose to be straight. It's how you were born. Considering that truth, the way that someone is born cannot be classified as a sin. The same way that being born African-American, Native American, Mexican-American cannot be classified as a sin either. I'm definitely not asking you to change your opinion, I'm just asking you to look at the facts.

      +Alec Vogel this is pretty awesome man and a very eye opening way to look at it. Regardless of how we are born, we sin and I think it's ludicrous to look at someone else and think their life is more sinful than another's based on no facts and mere speculation, which is what so many people do... Not just Christians. Thanks for commenting this cause it's definitely time people start moving past such outdated ways of thinking

Factually you don't have to act on those feelings the same as I have not acted on mine towards women, I'm wanting until marriage. Now I assume your response will be then what can you do because you're not attracted to women? My response would be if you're Christian then you would have faith god will reward you for staying strong. If you're not a Christian then I guess it doesn't matter just do what you want.

    I'm not religious, if someone wants to be religious, awesome!! But when they start treating people like they're less than human, and try to take away their rights because "it's against my religion" is where the line needs to be drawn. If you think being gay is a sin... don't be gay. But don't try to keep other people from being who they are. If everyone tried to stop people from doing things they didn't like, we'd all be standing in one place never accomplishing anything.

He beats around the bush because he doesn't want to piss off anybody... what I got from this painfully long explanation is that he indeed thinks homosexuality is a sin, but we should also see them as people just like any other because we all sin differently and we shouldn't judge others while comitting sin ourselves.
    not that i agree with him (naturally, since I am not a Christian). But I guess I respect his answer. He is one of the rare Christians who can say that he loves homosexuals, even though it is a "sin"

Does this show love to the lord with all of my heart, soul, body, strength and mind? and does this allow me to love my neighbor as myself? If we obey these commandments everything else will fall into place.

    Let us not confuse what is sin and how we as Christians share the expression of the love of Christ by our actions. Jesus said let our yes be yes and our no be no anything else is of the devil. There is no grey in truth. We are not to treat any sin different than any other, but at the same time just as Jesus loved us in our sin we are to love all sinners and share the true Gospel of Jesus Christ calling all sinners to repentance. The whole purpose of our love to non christians is to share the Gospel to allow the Holy Spirit to work in their heart to bring conviction of their sin. We are
    not to be friends with the lost, we are called to love all men that they would believe the Gospel, REPENT of their sin and receive eternal life

  • @coreenthusiast

    What I always go back to is this -- sin is sin. So if you have never sinned before, you can be the first to condemn a gay person. Here's the catch though - you're not perfect. You sin, I sin, everyone sins, whether it be in one way or another. I don't agree with the act of homosexuality, but that doesn't mean I hate everyone who practices that way. Garrett said it well and I think we as a people should be more loving and respectful towards each other.

  • @Hax04r
    @Hax04r 8 років тому

    Beautiful explanation as always Garrett. However, a bit confused about your confusion about the hierarchy of sin. Sure, all sin distracts us from God, but wouldn't murder distract us more than swearing or telling a small lie? I mean maybe not, as a Catholic (who are Christians btw some people don't know that so..) I've been taught the venial vs moral sin difference and it seems rather logical for me and that's saying a lot because I see some very illogical dogmas of the Church. Just wondering if you could provide further insight or explanation into your beliefs because they truly are inspiring.

    • @MattOliveiraSurf

      Read 1 corintians 4:4 buddy your answer is there :) god sees no sin bigger than another sin.. In fact sin cannot separate us from god, only we can and that's what paul explains in that verse... That just because your concience is clean it doesn't mean you are justified. In other words, telling a lie doesn't make you feel 'separated from god' because you just didn't let it get to you as much. Sorry for the long paragraph dude, I hope this helps because it helped me :D

    1:24 The Church has made it clear that we're to treat them with respect, compassion, and sensitivity[1]. That having been said, it's clearly outlined in both the Old Testament and the New: it _is_ a sin (one of four sins that cry to Heaven for Vengeance)[2][3][4][5][6]. One doesn't get to "decide" whether it's a sin or not.
