    Hyperion cover is great but it always bothered me we see the Shrike with only two arms. Four arms should have been the 2nd detail given to the artist immediately after "spikes everywhere".

      @WordsinTime  Рік тому

      Haha yes and the Shrike has 2 arms on the first three covers of the series then 4 arms on the last cover for The Rise of Endymion. Doesn’t make a lot of sense haha

    Not one of my favorite authors, but check out Larry Niven's FOOTFALL in hardback 1985. The artist is Amy Lamb. The art wraps around to the back. Favorite artist has to be Frank Frazetta or Michael Whelan

      That’s an epic cover! Thanks for the recommendations. Frank Frazetta’s art has a real feel and sense of time, and I love all of Michael Whelan’s art. The colors are amazing!

    Leviathan Wakes is BEAUTIFUL!

      I agree, it jumps off the page, and really conveys the sense of a cool space opera!

    I wish I enjoyed Dune more to justify picking up that edition! I haven't read Hyperion but it's currently front-facing on my shelf (due to space issues, but looks good)

      I feel similarly in that, while I really enjoyed Dune, I don’t feel compelled to pick up a deluxe edition. I do love that cover though! There are a lot of editions of Hyperion, but I think the simple mass market paperback looks the best!

    Would you say that you mostly prefer art pieces rather than graphic designs?

    • @WordsinTime
      @WordsinTime  Рік тому +1

      That’s a good question. My gut reaction would be to say art pieces, however there is a mix of both on this list so I guess I like both!

    When I clicked on the video I was like "this better have Hyperion" lol. Well done video! I really like this idea. I may have to do a fantasy version ;)

      Haha the Hyperion cover is fantastic. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
      I focus on sci-fi for the channel but I am also interested in fantasy. If you post a fantasy version, I'll check it out!

    Good picks. I hate most covers today but sci-fi leads the others in creativity. I like art illustrations painted best and hate photos and obvious photo shop jobs. I do my own covers in watercolor and ink. I may hire an artist for my next book so I'm looking around. Thanks for this, it gives me ideas.

      That’s cool Rachel! Art illustrations are great. I have since found some more covers that I really like. Perhaps in the future I will do an updated list. Best of luck!

    I picked Spin up for the cover and really enjoyed it. I didn’t continue on in the series though, have you?
    One of my favorite sci-fi covers is A Memory Called Empire. I was so sad I ended up DNFing it around halfway through because I love the cover so much!!

      I loved Spin! I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’ve heard mixed things on the sequel but I might try it at some point.
      Sorry to hear that A Memory Called Empire wasn’t for you. It’s on my TBR list and I plan on getting to it by the end of the year. I’ll let you know what I think!

      I hope you enjoy Memory! It just wasn’t for me at the time and I had a hard time caring about the characters. I enjoyed the culture building in the book however (when you get around to it I think you’ll know what I mean!)

    I haven't read most of these, but A Canticle for Leibowitz is a definitely a classic, and it's on my TBR list, too.
    The only sci-fi artists I like (who I can remember by name) are Chesley Bonestell and Michael Whelan. Years ago I followed several "retro future" Tumblr accounts that posted sci-fi art and design from the 50s-70s. Really groovy.

    • @WordsinTime
      @WordsinTime  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much for the artist recommendations! I checked out their websites and especially loved Saturn as seen from Titan, 1952 by Bonestell.
      I highly recommend Hyperion, Dune, Spin, and Empire of Silence, as well as Leviathan Wakes, which I know you’ve read. Gateway and Lord of Light didn’t land as hard for me but are worth checking out.
      Sea of Rust, A Canticle for Leibowitz, and To Your Scattered Bodies Go are on my TBR list.

      @@WordsinTime I'm debating whether or not I want to attempt Dune before seeing the Villeneuve film next month. I have scattered memories of the Lynch film, but am pretty sure I never saw the whole thing.
