- In this video i take you back in time to the year 2000 with more footage from my archives.
20 Year's ago all truckers went on protest over Diesel prices, we all stopped working for a full day.
However a couple of haulage companies continued to carry on as normal that day which didn't go down too well with the rest of us truckers, and resulted in a blockade of one of these companies to stop freight reaching Shannon Airport.

Thanks for joining me today, more footage from my archives as we look back at what happened on the day of the truckers diesel protest on September 15 2000. When the trucks stop everything stops.
Great video very nostalgic.will never happen again though, back then haulage company's would stick together as an industry.
Now they all just try to undercut each other
The TNT driver was hilarious
made my day
We should do again
i like the spirit of working together and standing by for each other
I remember this ,,for the life of me at the time I couldn't understand why drivers protested diesel prices and not there salaries, ,the wages where crap and savage hours,,
Can't comment on Irish prices but the problem in UK was foreign trucks filling their 1000 ltr tanks in Belgium or Luxembourg for half what we were paying and working here all week.
Being born in 1995, it is great to see a video of those times ... things seemed so 'normal'.
I was born 91 and I can agree with you there
cant lie i do like the trucks now a lot better
97
In today's video we got to see the unseen trucks of Rory Lynch transport
I remember it well. I was at school just before the foot and mouth outbreak Eddie stobart trucks parked up redundant following a refinery strike and shortage of fuel. Followed by cars cueing down the road trying to get fuel.
Something about 4 series and 3 series together seems an age ago now
wasnt even born then. great footage Stavros.
and with prices now it might be time for another one. cars as well should join petrols not great either
Great to watch this and be reminded we individually and collectively can make a difference, loved the footage, we still pay too much for fuel, loved the MAN.
I love seeing trucking as it was so long ago! Love it!
Great footage! Cheeeeerrr'sssssssss 👍
What an amazing video, thank you
I used to go to work with my dad back in 2000 I was only 11yrs old and he was driving a brand new "Y reg" MAN TGA 410. I used to love the pneumatic sound when shifting gears in that truck
@Andy B Indeed I remember ripping all the plastic wrapping off the seats and bunk on the first day we took it out, his old truck was a seddon atkinson with only 300bhp so this new Man TGA was a big upgrade
Similar thing happened in 2009 in New Zealand due to a hike in road user charges. most cities and towns streets were blocked for about an hour.
Thanks for sharing this, excellent footage 👍🏻
In addition to my previous comment and important to add. keep up the good work Stavros great content and your showing a good image to those working in the industry
Remember the fuel protests in England as well. Was in secondary school at the time.
(Think it was around 1997,98?)
Remember hearing the barrage of airhorns, than watching the rolling roadblock across all 3 lanes of the A2 through Bexley, SE London, crawling along in 1st gear at idle.
Felt a huge sense of pride even at that young age watching honest working men taking a stand against being shafted.
Public support was quite high overall at the time if I recall.
Great video stavros I remember it so well, can't wait to see some more of the old videos keep up the good work cheeeeersssss👍👍👍👍👍
Great video stavros, we should all do the same again to look for Insuraces to get cheaper it getting way to expensive to keep a truck on the road, 👍👍 well done
you know whats even funnier about insurance.
when you buy a car and the insurance costs more
At 3.48 I’m in that video going to Shannon for to go to the us nearly missed our flight ✈️ as a truck driver this should have happened more often 😎
Glad that Irish truckers are so supportive about the protest.
We here in Hong Kong, fuel prices are so high (Diesel USD1.85/Gasoline USD2.27) and gas companies are in oligopoly which all petrol stations have the same price. But no one is coming out to speak against the fuel price...
Great footage Stavros. Doubt you would get away with that today!
Awesome video Stavros!!!! God bless the truckers!
Thanks for sharing Stavros cheeeeerrresss👍👌
Recognising a lot of familiar faces from Shannon there. Thanks Stavros
Great to see this, really enjoyable to watch, remember it well @ border outside Newry...
Was in school at the time. I knew there was a protest but didn’t fully understand what the protest was for only that it was about diesel prices without knowing the ins and outs of it. Anyway, the lads were cruising up and down the N10 ring road in Kilkenny and myself and my friends were in full support and personally it was great seeing so many trucks together, I remember singing in my head the “Convoy” song lol.
Hey Stavros.... regarding diesel costs. I can remember growing on family farm during the 1940-1950's in USA in state of Ohio, we had a diesel tractor at that time diesel was 0.15 per gallon !!
Amazing video!
I remember the protests well I was 20 at the time my old man was an owner operator running South Wales to viena weekly for Davies turner.the issue then is still the same now.unfortunatly the smaller haulier in South Wales is almost dead it’s all large company’s now. However I believe the core message of what this protest was about is wrong. The price of diesel is irrelevant so long as every body is on a level playing field it does not matter the cost we should be able to move the cost along. The true issue in my mind is pay and working conditions drivers being asked to achieve the unachievable also documented on tv uk border force expected from all nationalities entering the uk to insure no stowaways are in the vehicle this is fare enough how ever the border force are armed and are entering trucks in groups of 10 or more how can we expect drivers to safely do this before entering the port on his own it’s not fair. So to my original point it’s pay and working conditions is what is the true issue and hauliers use fuel prices to hide behind as an excuse for both whilst ruthlessly undercutting each for greed of having a greater market share more lorry’s on the road and making less out of them. We all need better working conditions and like this action posted need to stay together sing from the same hymn sheet and fight for it
Gas to see the old Shannon/Ennis junction as I remember it. I recall this happening when I was out in the truck with my Dad 😊
Perfection is a vintage video ❤️
Them were the good old days i was five and just getting into trucks it was great to my favourite Scania the beautiful 164 good to see the 143 FH12 and Iveco Turbostar the footage is very clear for back then what kind of camera was it ? The aircraft would have been an British Airospace 146 or Avro RJ great great video Stavros my good friend John Ian Nelson will love it he loves the 143...👌👍
Keep it Swittas 👌🇬🇧🇮🇪
I was on the ones in England in Leeds .
This is great 😁 love seeing how the world look in 90s - 2000s, tnt and ups used to have regular ford transits 😯 Did your protest make any difference?
Nice time capsule, my step dad was a driver at the time.
Great Video Stav! You were rowdy back then 😜
Great to see drivers sticking together wouldn’t happen now days it’s a great shame .... an look where we are now with the fuel costs of running the motors the industry needs another strike big time
Good footage for 20 years ago haha, wasn't even alive when all this happened but fair play looked like a fun day but with a serious message him behind it
Hello i love your videos!
@Stavros969 Can you do a review of a 8x4 truck?
@@Gabitzu19 he just did on his last video :P
@@patrupumpkin Oh ok
Love it awesome content Stavros.
Cheers strabismus if u have any more old vids please walk them up
Solidarity, a rare thing now, sadly.
I remember this i couldn't get any fuel for days
What a time to be alive.
thats insane. i hope the protest worked
Same thing happening with the fuel prices
Where’s the Convoy Movie theme? 😂
🎼We got a great big convoy, trucking through the night🎼
Nice trucks there stavros 👌
Nearly got stranded a few times during this but a worthy cause-what they hell happened we are now well over £1 a litre but everyone just lays down and accepts it ffs
Woah.. its been a hot minute since i have seen a MAN TGA.. if i remember correctly.. they came witha V10 didnt they?
First one cheers
Truckers don't complain when diesel prices are low, over the course of twenty years surely the average price paid must balance out? And do trucking companies hedge their fuel prices like airlines?
brilliant and all good humored but as far as fuel prices go nothings really changed
Happened here as well, Fuel depots being blocked .
May you trace that TGA and review it :v
Awesome.. should be done again with the cost of everything.. only thing 20 years later truckers are not the same.. and the guards are definitely not the same..
As an add on to my previous comments I believe it should be completely illegal for operators to allow there trucks to overnight on the side of roads and industrial parks with out welfare facilities. This also needs to be led by all eu and uk governments providing in each town and industrial estates safe overnight parking facilities at a fair price may be even gaurded so drivers can have a proper rest period with out fear of fuel or loads being stolen trucks being damaged or stowaways boarding etc. I sadly believe we came close to this during the terrorist attacks on the Christmas markets in Berlin whilst a poor polish driver was out working overnighting and was killed and his truck as a bartering ram. Maybe if that truck was parked with some safety that may not have happened. I don’t mean to be unfair to the polish driver he was just do what we all have done all of us all over Europe us in the uk included I really feel for that mans family
Great footage 🚨🚨🚛
Brilliant!
You're videos are the best
Oi what's on the back of that van 😂😂
Well done Men 👍
And people complain about extinction rebellion blocking roads. lol
Should have stayed on strike until prices were lowered AKA: Less tax on fuel rather than a one day thing. Politicians aren't effected by a 1 day convoy Strike. Weeks of it, they would have felt.
I won’t lie, I only listen to him cause his accent is so god damn good
Only? Good content too
what was the point of blocking TNT? Did you get a possitive outcome frome the demonstration?
Nice really liked it
So, a protest about diesel fuel price, and they’re blocking mail HGVs, can somebody explain to me a bit on why is that so? What those drivers had to do with the plane? I really don’t understand since i’m not an irish
How much was diesel back then?
Less than it is now but of course there was no ad blue or taxes then it was more greed
Good Old days...
awesome!!
this is what the UK needs when the government tells us having the family round for dinner is illegal
Exactly plandemic needs to stop
@@carrick2494 I'm up for it!! I've had enough now
I hope this is a joke.
What happened? Did the oil prices on Ireland sky rocketed back in 2000?
Hello mate. I'm not sure but I think everyone had 4x2 at the time. I'm I right or is just a coincidence?
Greetings from Portugal
Didn't know they had digital Tacho then
imagine trying to do that today.. no chance
What was the thing with the vans?
wow, i was just 5 back then :O
see the difference between American police and the police here.
Did you have your own company back then ?? !!
👍👍
I don't get it, who were you guys protesting and how does a protest change the price of a commodity? Wouldn't protesting diesel prices be like protesting the price of an iPhone?
Hmm it's the diesel take to price down or same price
Ahhh the 00's. Miss those sperm race.
I am an Indian and want to drive trucks for they are fascinating machines...... Where is trucking industry better , in Europe or Canada ??? What is also the avg. monthly income of a trucker ??? Would be kind if you replied sir ..
i don't know about canada but europe depends on the country. anywhere between 2.5k euro and 5k.
Thay should do this today..or just use green.. 😜
Hey Stavros, protest regarding diesel costs.............I can remember growing up on family farm 1940- 1950 in USA in state of Ohio, we had diesel tractor at that time diesel was 0.15 per gallon !!
It would never happen in the states
Doesn't seem like 20 years ago🤔
Is Stavros your real name?
I was 6 at this point. I remember this being on the news in England. I'm guessing every truck was manual back then too, not a digital tachograph in sight no doubt.
