Alexander the Great is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated military commanders in history, and his campaigns have been studied and analyzed for centuries. However, whether he truly deserves the title of "greatest general" is a matter of debate. Arguments for Alexander's greatness: Unparalleled military victories: Alexander achieved a series of remarkable victories against formidable foes, including the Persians at Gaugamela and the Indians at the Hydaspes River. These victories were often won against overwhelming odds, demonstrating his tactical brilliance and strategic acumen. Adaptability and innovation: Alexander was able to adapt his tactics and strategies to suit the terrain, the enemy, and the circumstances. He was also known for his willingness to experiment with new ideas, such as the use of cavalry in conjunction with infantry. Charismatic leadership: Alexander was a charismatic leader who inspired fierce loyalty among his troops. This allowed him to achieve remarkable discipline and morale, even in the face of hardship and danger. Expansion of Greek culture: Alexander's conquests led to the spread of Greek culture and ideas throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. This process, known as Hellenization, had a lasting impact on these regions and laid the foundation for the development of Western civilization. Arguments against Alexander's greatness: Limited scope of conquests: While Alexander's conquests were impressive, they were ultimately limited in scope. He never managed to conquer all of India or reach the eastern edge of Asia, as he had originally planned. Brutal tactics: Alexander's campaigns were often marked by brutality and violence. He and his troops were known for their ruthless treatment of enemies, which has led to criticism of his character and moral compass. Overreliance on luck: Some historians argue that Alexander's success was due in part to luck, as he benefited from favorable circumstances and the mistakes of his opponents. Lack of lasting achievements: While Alexander's conquests had a significant impact on the ancient world, his achievements ultimately proved to be short-lived. The empire he created quickly collapsed after his death, and many of his cultural innovations were lost or forgotten over time. Conclusion: Alexander the Great was a brilliant military commander and a charismatic leader who achieved remarkable success in his lifetime. However, it is important to weigh his achievements against his shortcomings and to consider the context in which he operated. Ultimately, whether or not he deserves the title of "greatest general" is a matter of opinion.

There wasn't really a battle to lose...and there wasn't any losing of territory. Alexander led his army to initiate a siege on Pelium. Which was surrounded by hills on the one side and a river on the other...and it was difficult to get in and out. Alexander walked into this trap. When the defenders of Pelium withdrew into the town and Illyrians took positions on the hills, Alexander realized he just walked into a trap. Then he did what no other commander would have been able to do, he walked out without losing a single man. And then he slaughtered the Illyrian army. To trap, means to make it so that the victim can't leave. If the victim leaves, then the trap is a failure. If the victim not only exits the trap without losing a single man, but also slaughters your army in its sleep two days later...I don't see any success there for the Illyrians. Plus, no vast sways of territories were lost or gained during this engagement. It all happened around the town of Pelium.

When I think about Alexander and his life the one thing that made him great in my opinion is he was master at taking full advantage of everything given to him it really a defining quality in his character.
"The Great" comes from the title of the kings of Persia. "Great King". Since Cyrus, all Persian kings inherited the title Great King. To get this title you had to become ruler of Persia. When Alexander be came ruler of Persia, he got the title of Great King. Even Seleucid rulers referred to themsleves by this title in official documents. That title evolved into "the Great". People like Pompey (who never ruled Persia) wanted to imitate Alexander and he had the title "The Great" bestowed on himself...and he set a trend. Pompey was given that title for being a successful conqueror. Alexander gained the title as it came with his new position as ruler of Persia.

Alexander was the greatest man who ever lived based on his feats. I truly believe no one that I know of, had as big of a positive impact in the world like he did. He united vast territories that were getting destroyed by power struggles and insane rulers. After he conquered Persia, Persia advanced a lot. When Alexander conquered Egypt, he was the first Pharaoh and Ptolemy was the second Hellenic pharaoh. Ptolemy was also one of the greatest men who ever lived, he was loyal to Alexander and deserved to become the Pharaoh. Hellenic Egypt was the golden age of Egypt, because instead of destroying an empire they conquered, like many other military forces would've done, the Greeks exalted the Egyptian civilization, and brought it to new heights, they treated the population well, gave them complete freedom and cultural autonomy. Alexandria was the most important city in the world in that time, the center for Human enlightenment and human intellectual faculties, Alexander wanted mankind to be able to develop itself and wanted Alexandria to be a place where intellectuals could do that. The Roman conquest of Egypt was an awful timing, because they didn't have the awareness that the Greeks did. They weakened Egypt, only cared about taxes, and destroyed everything the Greeks had done. And because of that Egypt fell as a civilization and now Egypt is a shadow of its former glorious self and most Egyptian's Don't even know anything about the Egyptian civilization and have been islamized (had their original culture erased and replaced) I hope one day Greece ragains its rightful former glory, because Greece is the birthplace of civilization. They spread human knowledge and science to other territories outside Europe, and for example the arab scholars that contributed to science in antiquity, only had access to that knowledge thanks to the Greek scribes and texts that were brought to Persia, and other locations that fell under arab caliphate
ALEXANDER THE GREAT 356-323 BC At different times, Julius Caesar, Augustus Caesar and Caligula all visited Alexander's glass tomb in Alexandria, Egypt. Augustus kissed the ancient corpse and accidentally broke the nose; Caligula stole Alexander's breastplate... Alexander was born a prince of Macedonia and tutored by Aristotle. By the age of 22, he had conquered Greece and set sail to Asia Minor. Here, in what is now central Turkey, he cut in half the famous Gordian Knot, fulfilling a Greek legend that whoever unravelled it would rule the world. In Syria, he destroyed the armies of Darius III and gained control of the entire Eastern Mediterranean coast. He entered Egypt as a liberator. From there, he fought in India, where his legendary horse Bucephalus was killed. He was still on campaign at the age of 33 when a fever destroyed his health. At the time his empire stretched from Greece to northern India.

I tell you, then, that Mardonius and his army cannot get omens to his liking from the sacrifices. Otherwise you would have fought long before this. Now, however, it is his purpose to pay no heed to the sacrifices, and to attack at the first glimmer of dawn, for he fears, as I surmise, that your numbers will become still greater. Therefore, I urge you to prepare, and if (as may be) Mardonius should delay and not attack, wait patiently where you are; for he has but a few days' provisions left. 9.45.3 If, however, this war ends as you wish, then must you take thought how to save me too from slavery, who have done so desperate a deed as this for the sake of Hellas in my desire to declare to you Mardonius' intent so that the barbarians may not attack you suddenly before you yet expect them. I who speak am Alexander the Macedonian.” (The Histories [9.45] Herodotus) 2)Trojans were culturally and linguistically part of the bigger group (Greeks). Same religion (Olympian Gods had to choose sides),same burial customs, same language.Does Homer refers that Achilles and Hector needed a translator in order to understand each other? If they were not Greeks but barbarians (that means non-Greek) Homer would have written that down quite clearly,as he did in Odyssey "Πλέων επί οίνοπα πόντον, επ' αλλοθρόους ανθρώπους" (translation: cruising in the dark water sea,to people who speak a different language) 3)Byzantines,Eastern Roman Empire,to be more accurate : that is a 7-centuries step forward from Philip's era...Well ,you cant have an empire that insists only one nation, right? The main language was Greek though. Both Greek and Latin for the first 3 or 4 centuries, the rest was only Greek.
@@thanostnt 1. Yes Phillip of Macedon probably did have some Greek blood in him as Macedonians and Greeks were very closely intertwined, just like Lowland Scots like William Wallace and even Robert the Bruce had English blood in them, though they were still not considered English. 2. Trojans aren't considered CLASSICAL Greeks, by this I mean Greek during the classical error. During the Hellenistic era-- which started with Alexander the Great, Macedonians were considered Greek. I'm saying that Phillip of Macedon wasn't considered a CLASSICAL Greek. 3. Byzantines existed way before the Eastern Roman empire look up their history, they were there during the time of Phillip of Macedon and even before. The city of Byzantium was a former Greek colony founded in 667BC. They had close ties to Greek culture, but weren't considered CLASSICAL Greeks because by the time of classical Greece they had a lot of mixed eastern influences from the Persian empire.

They don't know how to respond about Aristotle since his Hellenic ethnicity has never been challenged. This Macedonian BS only commenced with the naming of FYROM. That instantly made the Slavs into ancient Macedonians.
Philip Appears At Sparta. When Philip wrote thus to the Spartans: If once I enter into your territories, I will destroy ye all, never to rise again; they answered him with the single word, If. Philip nor his son Alexander the Great attempted to capture the city. Philip is also recorded as approaching Sparta on another (?) occasion and asking whether he should come as friend or foe; the reply was "Neither". As bold and insulting as they were, Philip still steered clear of Sparta. So yeah. The Spartans really did taunt Philip II of Macedon with a single word or two, indeed. Philip eventually decided to bypass Sparta as it was a poor region and not worth the fight. Neither Philip nor Alexander attacked the Spartans while they ruled.
What is the relation between the Slavic-Albanian state north of Macedonia with the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon ? Were, the Argeads, slavs ? Is Philip, a Slavic name ? Is earth, flat ?

Even his Sudden death was prophesied in the bible. Therefore heralding the next world power and greatest that is Rome. So in the end he was just a tool in the hand of Jehovah.
You keep calling the battle of Chaeronea as against Greeks. Phillip was known to other Hellenistic cities as a Barbarian Greek. Having Kings was against Athenian and Greek Democracy however Sparta also had kings but going to war against Athens one does not characterize it as Sparta fighting against the Greeks...Macedonia derived from Mycynaean Greeks, spoke Greek had Greek Gods and took part in the Olympics! Alexander spread Greek "Hellenistic" civilization NOT Macedonian, Athenian, Corinthian etc civilizations...
Philip and Macedonia were considered as outsiders by the Greeks of mainland Greece. And while Philip was a great admirer of Greek culture, the average Macedonian was not. Greeks and Macedonians, in general, did not like each other.
it just the names given that are easiest to describe the warring parties. Macedonia was a the new power and reached greater heights than previous areas of Greece so they are the easiest to describe as something other than Greek. "The Greeks" works better for the alliance of Athens / Thebes and others because they are less powerful and had to ally together. Just makes it easier for people to understand. Also because the other Greek cities looked down on Macedon before Phillip and because people like Demosthenes propaganda against Phillip. I know it's a big thing between current Macedonians and Greeks arguing about it but in USA pretty much everyone who knows Alexander or who watched this would tell you he was of racially Greek but from a state called Macedon. I guess what I'm saying is that outside of a small part of the world nobody really views Alexander in some racial way, everyone pretty much agrees he was Greek. So because of that I think the narrator called the traditional powers of Athens and Thebes the "Greeks" wasn't to imply they were a different race. I think he meant it to imply that the "Greeks" were a group of Greeks who didn't want to be ruled by Macedon even though they were Greek too.
Alexander the great spread the Greek language across his empire he believed he was the son of Zeus he also named his horse buchapulus meaning oxhead in Greek so everything is Greek to me..The British museum London history guide on the ancient macedonians Hellenistic world of Alexander the great undoubtedly were Hellenes (Greeks)..

Alexander the Great is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated military commanders in history, and his campaigns have been studied and analyzed for centuries. However, whether he truly deserves the title of "greatest general" is a matter of debate.
Arguments for Alexander's greatness:
Unparalleled military victories: Alexander achieved a series of remarkable victories against formidable foes, including the Persians at Gaugamela and the Indians at the Hydaspes River.
Arguments against Alexander's greatness:
Limited scope of conquests: While Alexander's conquests were impressive, they were ultimately limited in scope.
Conclusion:
Alexander the Great was a brilliant military commander and a charismatic leader who achieved remarkable success in his lifetime. However, it is important to weigh his achievements against his shortcomings and to consider the context in which he operated. Ultimately, whether or not he deserves the title of "greatest general" is a matter of opinion.

Alexander was Greek, proving the opposite is impossible, because the name Alexander is two ancient Greek words used only in ancient Greece, Macedon and Macedonian, ancient Greek words, meaning tall and lean. Egyptians did not use Roman names when Rome conquered them. Point is, the person you wanted to give you a new name, Tito, himself said that you have nothing to do with the Greek Macedon and history, you are slavic, your people did not even exist at said time, I do not know if you are being brainwashed in school but no historian will tell you that Alexander is your ancestor, he is the person who united all of GREECE, not slavs. This is known throughout the world, any person from any country that has a small idea of history will agree. What you are doing is just sad and rude, both for you and for the Greeks that have to put up with your behavior. You can't steal other people's history.
Alexander was injured during the battle with illyrians lead by king Cleitus .It is rarely mentioned but macedonians lost that battle and they retreat in their territory.Alexander reorganized his army and captured illyrrians by surprize while they were celebreting .Macedonians won and 7000 illyrians joined to Alexander army and follow him in every campain in Asia. Some of them stayed in region known as Hundeza valley and are deceants of hundeza people that still keep illyrians physifical features and their traditions .

One of them
Personally I believe Jesus was the greatest man above all
When I think about Alexander and his life the one thing that made him great in my opinion is he was master at taking full advantage of everything given to him it really a defining quality in his character.
Taking advantage of others is not necessarily a virtue
Wow this story is amazing. It can rival the story of Achilles in my opinion. If he would've followed his father at the end maybe he would've died instead. Crazy.

Macedonians were greeks and considered greeks by the rest of the greeks. That can be proved from many things such as phillip was able to participate in the olympics(only greeks could) and also phillip's generation was from Peloponnese. The fact that they fought with each other was normal. All cities-states were fighting against each other. Phillip wanted to unite all the hellenic states as one nation for several purposes. I just wanted to commented that because maybe accidentally it was passed the message that they were different.
Fighting each other it is still normal!! No one liked Phillip cause he was well educated self made although his family ruled the area for sometime he did not care what the rest think of him he was a military and political mind and he loved women. He got married a few times. Provocing prudish part of greece. That's the reason for the rest of greeks that they did not liked him

@@anand1pillai it was the way to get civilized. Proof? Stay at home. We ll stay hether.
And because of that Egypt fell as a civilization and now Egypt is a shadow of its former glorious self and most Egyptian's Don't even know anything about the Egyptian civilization and have been islamized (had their original culture erased and replaced)
I hope one day Greece ragains its rightful former glory, because Greece is the birthplace of civilization. They spread human knowledge and science to other territories outside Europe, and for example the arab scholars that contributed to science in antiquity, only had access to that knowledge thanks to the Greek scribes and texts that were brought to Persia, and other locations that fell under arab caliphate

ALEXANDER THE GREAT
356-323 BC
At different times, Julius Caesar, Augustus Caesar and Caligula all visited Alexander's glass tomb in Alexandria, Egypt.
I wish that Aristotle is living in this time. It is a previlege to be his student.

Phillip himself participated in Olympic Games,no barbarian had that right, only Greeks.
Macedonians had that right for centuries before Phillip and Alexander.

@Thanos T
Philip participated in the Olympic games not because he was considered a classical Greek, but because of the rise in power of Macedonia, it was more a political move to ease tensions with the growing dominant state. The Classical Greeks and especially the Athenians considered the Macedonians as barbarians, though the Macedonians did have close customs and ties to the classical Greeks, but so did the Trojans and Byzantines-- and they weren't considered classical Greeks either.
@@JerodimusPrime
Wait a minute, too many mistakes in just one small paragraph:
1)In order to participate the ancient Olympics, you had to prove your Greek bloodline.Only Greek men had that privilege.
Even if Philip did that for his own political reasons, that doesn't mean that he could if he was not Greek.
Macedonians had that right centuries before Alexander the Great and his father Philip II ,thanks to Alexander I.
Macedonians were from Doric stock,as Spartans, descendants of Argead dynasty.
This is the historical truth, nothing more - nothing less:
“Men of Athens, I give you this message in trust as a secret which you must reveal to no one but Pausanias, or else you will be responsible for my undoing. In truth I would not tell it to you if I did not care so much for all Hellas; 9.45.2 I myself am by ancient descent a Greek, and I would not willingly see Hellas change her freedom for slavery. I who speak am Alexander the Macedonian.”
(The Histories [9.45] Herodotus)
2)Trojans were culturally and linguistically part of the bigger group (Greeks). Same religion (Olympian Gods had to choose sides),same burial customs, same language.Does Homer refers that Achilles and Hector needed a translator in order to understand each other? If they were not Greeks but barbarians (that means non-Greek) Homer would have written that down quite clearly,as he did in Odyssey "Πλέων επί οίνοπα πόντον, επ' αλλοθρόους ανθρώπους" (translation: cruising in the dark water sea,to people who speak a different language)
3)Byzantines,Eastern Roman Empire,to be more accurate : that is a 7-centuries step forward from Philip's era...Well ,you cant have an empire that insists only one nation, right?
The main language was Greek though. Both Greek and Latin for the first 3 or 4 centuries, the rest was only Greek.
@@thanostnt

Amen he was like a tornado sweeping through the land
