  • Alexander the Great - The Rise of a Legend
Wiki: Alexander III of Macedon (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Γ΄ ὁ Μακεδών; 20/21 July 356 BC - 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great (Ancient Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, translit. Aléxandros ho Mégas, was a king (basileus) of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and a member of the Argead dynasty. He was born in Pella in 356 BC and succeeded his father Philip II to the throne at the age of twenty. He spent most of his ruling years on an unprecedented military campaign through Asia and northeast Africa, and he created one of the largest empires of the ancient world by the age of thirty, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders.

The Persian version of His-Story is rife with the tragedy of barbarians who came along to destroy their amazing culture.. they called him "Alexander The Devil" in Prof. Michael Woods excellent BBC series " in the footsteps of Alexander"... ultimately he got sorted out and sent scurrying back by the Indian rulers of Punjab and Haryana with a poisoned arrow embedded in him.
Was he a great General .. Yes! Was he a strategic Thinker..Yes! he was.

For me, it is either Thales ( the first scientist in history, the founder of natural science, what a breakthrough), or Themistocles ( he not only defeated the Persians but had to convince the people to say ok to his right plan! deciding the right action was not enough! but in a democracy he had to convince the many that it was the right choice to make the ships), or one of Socrates-Plato. Or one of Kleisthenes-Solon who founded democratic system. Or one of Phillip-Alexander because of the impact of spreading Greek culture. All of these people had huge impact.

There wasn't really a battle to lose...and there wasn't any losing of territory.
Alexander led his army to initiate a siege on Pelium. Which was surrounded by hills on the one side and a river on the other...and it was difficult to get in and out.
Alexander walked into this trap. When the defenders of Pelium withdrew into the town and Illyrians took positions on the hills, Alexander realized he just walked into a trap. Then he did what no other commander would have been able to do, he walked out without losing a single man. And then he slaughtered the Illyrian army.
To trap, means to make it so that the victim can't leave. If the victim leaves, then the trap is a failure.
If the victim not only exits the trap without losing a single man, but also slaughters your army in its sleep two days later...I don't see any success there for the Illyrians.
Plus, no vast sways of territories were lost or gained during this engagement. It all happened around the town of Pelium.

"The Great" comes from the title of the kings of Persia. "Great King".
Since Cyrus, all Persian kings inherited the title Great King. To get this title you had to become ruler of Persia. When Alexander be came ruler of Persia, he got the title of Great King. Even Seleucid rulers referred to themsleves by this title in official documents.
That title evolved into "the Great".
People like Pompey (who never ruled Persia) wanted to imitate Alexander and he had the title "The Great" bestowed on himself...and he set a trend.
Pompey was given that title for being a successful conqueror.
Alexander gained the title as it came with his new position as ruler of Persia.

Egyptians did not use Roman names when Rome conquered them. 356-323 BC
At different times, Julius Caesar, Augustus Caesar and Caligula all visited Alexander's glass tomb in Alexandria, Egypt. Augustus kissed the ancient corpse and accidentally broke the nose; Caligula stole Alexander's breastplate... Alexander was born a prince of Macedonia and tutored by Aristotle. By the age of 22, he had conquered Greece and set sail to Asia Minor. Here, in what is now central Turkey, he cut in half the famous Gordian Knot, fulfilling a Greek legend that whoever unravelled it would rule the world. In Syria, he destroyed the armies of Darius III and gained control of the entire Eastern Mediterranean coast. He entered Egypt as a liberator. From there, he fought in India, where his legendary horse Bucephalus was killed. He was still on campaign at the age of 33 when a fever destroyed his health. At the time his empire stretched from Greece to northern India.

Macedonians were greeks and considered greeks by the rest of the greeks. That can be proved from many things such as phillip was able to participate in the olympics(only greeks could) and also phillip's generation was from Peloponnese. The fact that they fought with each other was normal. All cities-states were fighting against each other. Phillip wanted to unite all the hellenic states as one nation for several purposes. I just wanted to commented that because maybe accidentally it was passed the message that they were different.

Fighting each other it is still normal!! No one liked Phillip cause he was well educated self made although his family ruled the area for sometime he did not care what the rest think of him he was a military and political mind and he loved women. He got married a few times. Provocing prudish part of greece. That's the reason for the rest of greeks that they did not liked him

Alexander was the greatest man who ever lived based on his feats.
I truly believe no one that I know of, had as big of a positive impact in the world like he did.
He united vast territories that were getting destroyed by power struggles and insane rulers. After he conquered Persia, Persia advanced a lot.
When Alexander conquered Egypt, he was the first Pharaoh and Ptolemy was the second Hellenic pharaoh.
Ptolemy was also one of the greatest men who ever lived, he was loyal to Alexander and deserved to become the Pharaoh.
Hellenic Egypt was the golden age of Egypt, because instead of destroying an empire they conquered, like many other military forces would've done, the Greeks exalted the Egyptian civilization, and brought it to new heights, they treated the population well, gave them complete freedom and cultural autonomy. Alexandria was the most important city in the world in that time, the center for Human enlightenment and human intellectual faculties, Alexander wanted mankind to be able to develop itself and wanted Alexandria to be a place where intellectuals could do that.
The Roman conquest of Egypt was an awful timing, because they didn't have the awareness that the Greeks did. They weakened Egypt, only cared about taxes, and destroyed everything the Greeks had done. And because of that Egypt fell as a civilization and now Egypt is a shadow of its former glorious self and most Egyptian's Don't even know anything about the Egyptian civilization and have been islamized (had their original culture erased and replaced)
I hope one day Greece ragains its rightful former glory, because Greece is the birthplace of civilization. They spread human knowledge and science to other territories outside Europe, and for example the arab scholars that contributed to science in antiquity, only had access to that knowledge thanks to the Greek scribes and texts that were brought to Persia, and other locations that fell under arab caliphate

Philip participated in the Olympic games not because he was considered a classical Greek, but because of the rise in power of Macedonia, it was more a political move to ease tensions with the growing dominant state. The Classical Greeks and especially the Athenians considered the Macedonians as barbarians, though the Macedonians did have close customs and ties to the classical Greeks, but so did the Trojans and Byzantines-- and they weren't considered classical Greeks either.

    • @thanostnt
      @thanostnt 5 років тому +3

      @@JerodimusPrime
Wait a minute, too many mistakes in just one small paragraph:
1)In order to participate the ancient Olympics, you had to prove your Greek bloodline.Only Greek men had that privilege.
Even if Philip did that for his own political reasons, that doesn't mean that he could if he was not Greek.
Macedonians had that right centuries before Alexander the Great and his father Philip II ,thanks to Alexander I.
Macedonians were from Doric stock,as Spartans, descendants of Argead dynasty.
This is the historical truth, nothing more - nothing less:
“Men of Athens, I give you this message in trust as a secret which you must reveal to no one but Pausanias, or else you will be responsible for my undoing. In truth I would not tell it to you if I did not care so much for all Hellas; 9.45.2 I myself am by ancient descent a Greek, and I would not willingly see Hellas change her freedom for slavery. I tell you, then, that Mardonius and his army cannot get omens to his liking from the sacrifices. Otherwise you would have fought long before this. Now, however, it is his purpose to pay no heed to the sacrifices, and to attack at the first glimmer of dawn, for he fears, as I surmise, that your numbers will become still greater. Therefore, I urge you to prepare, and if (as may be) Mardonius should delay and not attack, wait patiently where you are; for he has but a few days' provisions left. 9.45.3 If, however, this war ends as you wish, then must you take thought how to save me too from slavery, who have done so desperate a deed as this for the sake of Hellas in my desire to declare to you Mardonius' intent so that the barbarians may not attack you suddenly before you yet expect them. I who speak am Alexander the Macedonian.”
      (The Histories [9.45] Herodotus)
2)Trojans were culturally and linguistically part of the bigger group (Greeks). Same religion (Olympian Gods had to choose sides),same burial customs, same language.Does Homer refers that Achilles and Hector needed a translator in order to understand each other? If they were not Greeks but barbarians (that means non-Greek) Homer would have written that down quite clearly,as he did in Odyssey "Πλέων επί οίνοπα πόντον, επ' αλλοθρόους ανθρώπους" (translation: cruising in the dark water sea,to people who speak a different language)
3)Byzantines,Eastern Roman Empire,to be more accurate : that is a 7-centuries step forward from Philip's era...Well ,you cant have an empire that insists only one nation, right?
The main language was Greek though. Both Greek and Latin for the first 3 or 4 centuries, the rest was only Greek.

      1. Yes Phillip of Macedon probably did have some Greek blood in him as Macedonians and Greeks were very closely intertwined, just like Lowland Scots like William Wallace and even Robert the Bruce had English blood in them, though they were still not considered English.
      2. Trojans aren't considered CLASSICAL Greeks, by this I mean Greek during the classical error. During the Hellenistic era-- which started with Alexander the Great, Macedonians were considered Greek. I'm saying that Phillip of Macedon wasn't considered a CLASSICAL Greek.
      3. Byzantines existed way before the Eastern Roman empire look up their history, they were there during the time of Phillip of Macedon and even before. The city of Byzantium was a former Greek colony founded in 667BC. They had close ties to Greek culture, but weren't considered CLASSICAL Greeks because by the time of classical Greece they had a lot of mixed eastern influences from the Persian empire.
