Pickaroons are an absolutely essential tool if you get to my age and you want to preserve whats left of your back. Do not leave home without one.....Nice video .

Hook shape makes that a hookaroon. Pickaroons have pick head. Good work either way.

I didn't know what a pickaroon was, but now I think I need one... 😉. Great job, John!

Looks like a very handy tool! You seem to do very well for having two herniated discs you're doing very well! Nothing to it really. Anyway thanks again John!

These are super handy. Grew up using a pickaroon to process firewood at my parents house. It was my grandfather’s. Pro-tip: don’t miss a log and hit yourself in the shin with it. It will hurt.

Might need to find one of these myself, I have two bad discs in my back also!
I think having a wood box, or a bucket handy to set your axe and pickeroon in to keep them from falling over on the ground would be a good idea, the whole ‘saving the back’ thing kinda falls apart if you have to reach to the ground to get your axe and pick for every log!

A pickeroon. Now I know if it should ever come up as a question in some quiz, conversation or as a word in a book. Also, I understand how its formed and used, mostly. I so enjoy the entertainment but more so the education of your channel and others. Found out about a fractal vice, only in the last year. Education is a fine thing. Cheers John

I don't want to sound rude/arrogant, I want to give some advise; Seeing one of his videos I noticed (seemed to me) he had more trouble than a woodworker would when sanding and finishing handles. Learning to use and sharpen a card scrapper is a huge improvement over sandpaper for getting roughness out of a handle, after it has been basically shaped. Sandp. would come after scrapping. In UA-cam people like Paul Sellers teach the use of the tool. If anyone can make an effort to suggest him this it would be cool. Or if he reads this.

I enjoy watching you work. It reminds me of my watching my dad who was a fifth generation master blacksmith. Unfortunately all of my generation did other things. And even though I’ve earned a good living in computer engineering. I can’t tell you how many times I have regretted not following in my father’s footsteps.

For a guy with back problems, you sure seem to hurk around some big ass rounds of firewood to chop up just fine. Great Video.

Staying active helps a lot. I stretch a good bit too to help manage the pain. When it's really bad I can barely walk. But if I stay on top of stretching and staying moving I can live with it

Nice. Don't need one, but now I want one! :-) Actually, doing arbor work, these are very handy to have. You can use an axe too, but axes are harder to release from the wood.

I have put a triangular point on mine that helps release it from the wood easier. Just a suggestion if you have problems in that regard.

Yeah crazy how few people know to go after the sides first on a big round. Way easier than starting in the middle

@OldHickoryForge I actually have never even thought of doing the sides. So, not only did I learn that I need to forge myself a pickaroon, but also learned how to tackle a large piece like that

It's a good jumping off point. Can provide great life skills like discipline and time management. But I would say avoid going into a combat arms MOS. Go in for something that will set you up good in the civilian world. Do your four years. Get your GI bill and go from there

If the pickaroon is to save you from bending over perhaps you should get into the habit of leaning it and your maul against something instead of droping them on the ground and having to BEND OVER to pick them up. Just saying😁
