Spigen makes a good rubber frame for the watch face edges to protect it. The biggest thing is they've largely dropped the Fitbit paywall. My pixel 1 is still working fine. I've used the paid Fitiv app with this to display hr data from the watch to a bike mounted phone. Then the data syncs from that back to google, Samsung etc. Ultimately I think you're right, google will make some Ultra watch. I have no problems with my Pixel 1, treating it rough...the original being small, I kind of treat it like a fitness band but smarter. I do leave the watch face on Big Time though because I've got the smaller watch.
Great Review! I just got the Pixel Watch 3 for half a week. And I am absolutely happy with it. I got the small one, because it is not bulky, and looks like a normal watch. Everything works, no flaws yet. And the Battery life is more than enough. I like it very much.
Glad to hear about the battery. My pixel watch 2 doesn't always last me the whole day. I think gps gets stuck on and drains it. Glad to see this one much better. Plan to get the larger one.
Thank you in your previous video for comparing the Fenix 8 to the T-Rex 3 after your excellent T-Rex 3 video review. That was exactly what I needed. I am looking at Watches in the $200-$400 range. If money were no object, I would go with something like the new Garmin Enduro 3 watch. Right now for my budget, I think it is between T-Rex3 $279 vs Pixel Watch 3 45mm at $399.
The high cost of Garmin watches starts to make sense when you consider subscription models being part of some of these other watches. I will never have a subscription. I just want to buy the product.
Coincidently, the Quantified scientist drop his pixel 3 review at the same time. HR sensor is as good as Apple watch. So now we have this watch that only works on Android and Apple watch that only works on Apple. Can't we just all get along?
Yeah it's funny how the comment section gets, but all the watches are the same now. The problem with pixel phone and watch is the price tag and the worry about the third party apps and support for pixel watch. If priced the same, apple wins. But it doesn't matter what I think, the market agrees as well.
Couple of reasons I let go of the pw2: 1. Audio cues - this seems like a basic feature when working out but I didn’t find this on the pixel watch 2. Bedtime mode/clock - there’s no low power version of the clock, so the watch face would be blinding in the night when i want to see the time. Switched to a Garmin 165 and been loving it.
Another great review. In strongly considering moving to the Google ecosystem. Is there a mapping or routing app like footpath or WorkOutDoors for the pixel watch?
Natively there's Google Maps with offline map capabilities but it's not awesome for running/hiking sort of things. There are third party mapping apps but I'm not sure if Footpath is supported though they do have a dedicated android app play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.halfmilelabs.footpath&hl=en_US
The biggest disappointment with the Pixel Watch 2 was in fitness tracking there was basically only treadmill, GPS activity and everything else. The tracking in all the other activities was just heart rate, regardless of what you told it you were doing. My Garmin will track rowing speed or reps with weights or number of squats or sit up or push ups or just about everything else imaginable. The Pixel Watch should have all the sensors to keep track of this but it instead just has a nearly useless level of data recording. Does the Pixel Watch 3 improve on this at all?
PLEASE BUY A CASE/SCREEN PROTECTOR. I literally got my watch Tues evening, went to the gym Wed morning (less than 24 hrs after getting the damn thing), and it was scratched up. I don't even remember really hitting up against much of anything, AND I had my hoodie on, so it was covered most of the time. I'm sending it back. No way it should have scratched so easily that I don't even recall any banging that could have caused the scratches. Usually I feel any banging or scratching against something when wearing my galaxy ultra and immediately look down, even though I know it's so durable, it never has a mark. But with this pixel watch 3, I never even had any such moments. Then BAM... I'm looking down to check the time into my workout, heart rate, etc, and I'm FLOORED! Like how in THE FI-ZUCK did this thing get these scratches?!! I've worked out with my pixel watch 2 multiple times, and there isn't a SINGLE scratch on it, and I don't have a screen protector on it either.
I've tried so many other watches (from Garmin and the Pixel watch 1&3) and returned them all to put back on the FR 955. It's the functionality/aesthetic/price sweet spot for sure.
I see you have Golf Pad as an app, Can you get through a whole round of golf with it. I end up switching to my Garmin S42 on two or three golf days a week. It also gets 2 weeks of battery.

My problem with the pixel watch 3 45mm is that there are barely any good 3rd party bands available! Google's ability to partner with 3rd parties to make watch bands is abysmal to say the least!!!
Great review. Google's just killing me with their prices. For bluetooth hr sensors, one with bluetooth should work. I used a wahoo tickr with my apple watch and my garmin.
As much as all the apps and and the rest have some added value I still think 2 days battery life (max) is a massive deal breaker for many. Epix Pro for life! 😃
There are so many other smartwatch brand rocking the rugged look. People forget that women or folks who prefer a more subtle style are also on the market and the current pixel look fits a multitude of styles.
I'm not saying that it NEEDS to be rugged. But the fact that they have 2 sizes and they both look identical feels like a missed opportunity. I think most folks going for the 45mm will have larger wrists anyways?

Had the Galaxy watch ultra which unfortunately I had to send back due to the big problem it has working on 4g and not making calls by itself. I now have the Pixel watch 3 which works great on 4g by itself which is what I need. But just about everything else the ultra beats it unfortunately...
