    With the Chinese-owned Hinckley Point Power Station below you, going Chinese was the right choice on this occasion.

    Thanks, John. Always a pleasure. I enjoy your self-effacing humour. I laughed at the understated cocaine joke too. A good example of showing not telling. Also, it was unexpected and a bit like the Alamo on the hill with the blighters popping up, every now and again. A bit Monty Python does stealth camping! Looking forward to seeing you reach your first 1000 subscribers. I am sure that this will then rise exponentially at some stage thereafter.

      Thanks Johnny! Yes the white powder in the miniature jam jar did look a bit suspicious!
      I'm not sure I'm very good at playing the game when it comes to subscriber numbers! I do have a vague idea of the sort of things I probably should be doing if that was the goal but it's usually a combination of things I don't want to do and things the conditions don't allow for. For example this video is too long, and the actual tent (i.e. the core wild camping bit) only features in it for a few seconds, mostly in the dark. I always take far too much footage on a trip like this, especially when I'm having a good time, because I want to capture it and remember it... and then I'm loathed to throw too much of it away when it comes to editing. Plus as I mentioned in the video other wild camping UA-camrs seem a lot more brazen about setting up their tent in the daylight so they get better / more footage of that. I guess that partly reflects my attitude to camping - the tent is just a means to an end, just somewhere to sleep. The bits I enjoy are all the bits outside the tent!
      So I suspect this is always going to be a niche / offbeat channel, just me doing my own thing in my own weird way, but I'm really glad there are at least some people out there who seem to like that!

      Yes it was a magical trip! The colours were even more vivid in real life. I don't think I have ever been to the Quantocks before, what a beautiful part of the world!
      The meal did turn out surprisingly well, the version of this I've had in restaurants has a lot more oil but I think I captured the essence of the flavour. Hmm yes a cookbook sounds like a fun project!

    Thanks for an excellent video, you did well to find a camp spot in the dark. Your tent set up is ideal for those situations as all the space you really need is somewhere flat to lie down. Your pretend beef looked like dog biscuits. 👍

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  Рік тому

      Thanks Ysgolgerlan! Yes it's really handy having a tiny tent like that as you say. It's definitely not the sort of tent I'd want to spend any length of time in other than when I'm asleep (or at least trying to sleep) but that's fine by me - I'm outdoors because I want to enjoy being outdoors.
      Yes I agree they look a bit like dog biscuits!

    Well done on overcoming your 'wild camping block'.
    Thoroughly lovely country with spectacular views. I once intended to check out the Quantocks - purchased the map and everything - then moved to the north west and completely forgot about them. I must schedule in a trip and possibly a portentous video about Tweedy's stone circle that about 50 people will watch.
    It looked like there were bats flying around you up by the trig. You were obviously oblivious.
    Food looked lovely and I preferred your version of 'beef'. But I'm not going to get all preachy. I wear fur felt hats for crying out loud - what sort of vegetarian does that make me?
    Welcome back and don't fret about those UA-cam wild campers who make it look easy. They're all liars!

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  Рік тому +3

      I think the secret to getting over the wild camping block was partly just being further away from home! By about 8pm there was no real option to just give up and go home so I knew I was committed.
      Yes the Quantocks are delightful! I don't think I've ever been before. I suppose they're a bit like a smaller and possibly prettier version of Exmoor? Alas I doubt very much there would be any remnant left of my stone circle, even if you were to hot foot it down there this weekend! Possibly the megalith equivalent of a sand mandala...?
      Tweed and vegetarianism do seem a bit of a contradiction don't they? I don't really have a good rationale, I suppose I have just accumulated these quirks over the years and never really stopped to take stock of whether they all collectively make sense!
      I think part of what rankled in that rant about other UA-camrs and how they make wild camping look like a walk in the park is that I thought this platform wasn't Instagram! Over there it's sort of expected that everything will be cherry picked and glamourised, but I always thought part of the appeal of UA-cam was that it was more "warts and all".

    This was another absolute treat to watch with my morning coffee! That's what makes an adventure an adventure, is the unpredictability of it all. I absolutely love it when you make a Tolkien reference to some of the areas you hike through because I'm a huge LOTR nerd lol. Very cool once again! Cheers Tweedy! 🎩🍷🍾⛺🌳🌄

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  Рік тому +2

      Thanks Jamie! I'm a Tolkien fan too, I have been since I read the Hobbit around the age of 10. I think he took lots of inspiration from the English countryside (the Malvern Hills and the beech trees at Avebury spring to mind) so it's probably not surprising bits of the countryside in turn remind me of his writing!

    Hi Tweedy, I enjoyed your video. Nice cosy camp and meal. You have a good lightweight set up. ‘Beef’ looked a little interesting! Wine looks exceptional. You also aided to my knowledge of Asian style cooking. That heather is a pest over here as it takes over productive sheep grass. Looks good though. 🇬🇧 🇳🇿

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Dave! Yes the heather also contributed to making it difficult to find camping spots as I alluded to in the video - the places which weren't covered in it were either paths or areas like the top of that hill which draw a lot of people to see the views.
      If I wanted to be a successful outdoor UA-camr I should probably have spent a bit more time talking about my kit as my tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag/quilt probably had a combined weight of around 1.5kg, which I think must put me into the ultralight category... but then of course me being me I squander those savings by bringing along a cooking setup which is more complicated than it really needs to be and a bottle of wine!

    Another great video in a lovely part of the country. Your enthusiasm is infectious and makes me want to visit this part of Somerset. Your ability to produce what seemed to be a good meal with such meagre equipment is amazing .Your choice of wines is excellent and they must smooth the way for you! Please keep the videos coming.

      Thanks JR for that very nice comment! I really enjoyed this trip and hopefully that came across in the video. I love the challenge of camp cooking and it feels like most of what I normally cook at home can indeed be recreated on a campstove with just a billy can, a small frying pan and my trusty spork!

      Hi! It was nice to meet you briefly! Sorry I didn't really intend to include you in the time lapse but that's just where the sunset was, and I thought the silhouettes added something to it. I hope you don't mind. I think when I went back to the trig point later another couple were sitting there then - it's a popular spot and understandably so!

    Tweedy your weather was certainly out of the ancient Mariner:
    “Nor wind nor motion,
    As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean”
    Do you think Coleridge was on the whacky baccy when he wrote that?

    Nice setting. Is your wine glass plastic or glass?

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  Рік тому +2

      Alas it's plastic. A few years ago when I developed a penchant for al fresco drinking I used to carry glass glasses, and then once on a windy day the glass blew off the bench I was sitting on and smashed. It was a public park where I occasionally see people walking bare foot, and I felt terrible. I spent about half an hour meticulously picking up every tiny shard I could find and decided from that point on I should just use plastic. It's Tritan, which is apparently a "safe" form of plastic (BPA free etc). It's the best thing I could find, but obviously still not the same experience as a proper glass made of glass.

    Have you considered Sukiyaki Beef? Drop the beef and you are left with a tofu, mushrooms and green veg in a sweet soya and mirin sauce. There doesn't seem to be a definitive recipe so little chance of offence.
