The fact you guys are stating the boys couldn't do this, the boys couldn't do that, yet ignore, this ENGLAND side had 90% of its 2023 RWC team on that park playing it's 7th International game against an ALL BLACK team that is playing its FIRST international game since the 2023 RWC, missing WHITELOCK, SMITH, RETALICK, COLES, FRIZELL, MO'UNGA, CANE, TAUKEI'AHO, LAULALA, FAIGA'ANUKU, NAWARA and an injured WIL JORDAN, ROIGARD, HAVILI, a new Coach, new system, yet, won a close game against an already battle tested, battle hardened ENGLAND team who beat IRELAND and came close to beating FRANCE most recently. 20 something years ago in Cape Town, Victor Matfield (Boks rush defense) ran a hole through DC’s chest. AB’s lost that game because they couldn’t deal with the rush defense. 20 something years later, and the AB’s still battling with that rush defense. It’s was clear to see on Saturday. The boks will bring that same rush defense again later this year. While it’s awesome to watch expansive and fast rugby, you have to be able to adapt and handle that rush defense better. Good luck for this coming Saturday boys 🖤🖤

It's very clear that a super fast rush defence system is the best way to defend, as it puts so much pressure on the opposition attack. SA perfected it and England are now becoming very good at it. Question is why do the ABs refuse to implement this system? McLeod as a defence coach preferred a passive system, and I was hoping that Hansen would change this, but the defence under him looked equally as passive. Dumb and mind boggling. We are making it so easy for the opposition to make easy metres the way we currently defend.

Turn the defense around and slow up their rush. Make them react to what you are doing instead of beating your backs against the wall. lots of two man tackles on 1st receivers...Then move up as it opens up.

I agree. Even if just to make the rush D have to move further. The risk is we go backwards faster if the defence is successful however to balance that out they get more tired and potentially have to run faster to make up the ground in which case our kicking game, grubbers etc become more effective as turning around is harder to do for them if they are travelling quicker. Many advantages to being a little deeper. Only play it doesnt help with is the cross field winger kick

I don't think there should be shot clock. Why? because it provides another avenue to waste time. The referee should simply give one time warning ( 30sec,15secs but only one) on the cue from his official time keeper and leave the players to manage it. If the player has to manage the time left then that player is less likely to fluff around leaving it to the last second.

@@johndiamond6931 I think Perenara started OK, but to my eyes he seemed to get slower as the 1st half progressed (prior to the injury). His box kicks didn't seem that good (head down/lack of depth control), he seemed to complain (offside ref) a lot before reaching in to get the ball from the ruck. I felt it gave the English more time to set their defense (which was very good) when he did pass. A 4.5/10 performance. Christie had his own issues (I'd rate similarly).

@@jeromieweatherburn8835 fair assessment except i would rate Perenara a 6/10. Compared to Christie there was a huge difference in the 2nd half.
In the first half ABs were able to create so many opportunities but couldn't finish them all. In the 2nd half they created none.
The main reason I believe was the difference between each platform each halfback was able to give their teammates, Perenara was ahead there.
I absolutely agree TtJ started to get slower later in the first half which is the same time he started to get on the ref and try to play mind games with the ref. And it's a huge negative to his overall game because up until then he was playing mostly very well.
Christie also had a tendency to cry out to the ref too which I think both halfbacks are guilty off and may have squandered opportunities because of it.
But there was a massive difference between both halves, in the first hslf ABs were able to play in Englands half many times and were able to score 2 tries, in the 2nd half I don't remember ABs even getting into Englands 22 and they didn't score any tries.
So basically that's how I saw it.

I'll talk about it. I think you're getting overly excited ... investigation ? give me strength. There was no "shot clock" !! The clock on the screen is the broadcaster's clock. There are forever discrepancies .... for example the referee calls time off and the clock ticks away and the referee calls time on and the clock is not restarted. It's not the official time!!
The match will have a designated official time keeper/s - whether that be the referees assistants or other delegated officials. Have you seen the number of officials at a high level rugby match before. What do you think they all do.

DMac, had actually started his movement to kick the ball when the ref called it off. Could DMac hear him, I am not sure. But DMac is consistently over the sixty seconds in many of his kicks. Time for a shot clock so we can all see it.
But, DMac has pushing this envelope too long, it was inevitable that tis would happen.

    • @lovemysport7902
      @lovemysport7902 2 місяці тому +1

I believe that the 60 second Shot Clock starts from when the team tells the Ref their intention & (should be) stopped when the Ball is struck. If the shot clock were to stop at the start of the Run-Up then one could in theory place the ball, sprint back 50 yards & start your very slow run-up taking a heap more time off the clock. Frustratingly a team could wind down the clock another 5-15 secs by delaying their decision but that is another issue. Once the Ref has made the mark, blown their whistle & pointed to the posts, that should be the end of their involvement until signaling whether time has run out or the Kick/Conversion was successful etc. It should not be up to the Ref to give a ’10 second’ warning - hear me out.
You would hope that by the time the decision is made to kick for the posts, that both the Ball & Tee are readily available to the Kicker. If the delivery of either is delayed then that is valuable seconds lost. To avoid those ‘lost seconds’ the team should have a 'Water Boy' & a Tee on both sidelines with the 'Water Boy' being positioned on the sideline as close to the Kicker as possible to speed up the handover of the Tee. The normal routine is for the Kicker to get the Tee off the ‘Water Boy’ while firstly having a quick slurp. To take a bit of the pressure off the Kicker, I would suggest that the 'Water Boy' be the Kickers eyes/ears with regards to the Shot Clock, personally giving the Kicker the reminders that they prefer to hear be it a 10 secs, a 12 secs, 15 secs or whatever. If there is no visible Shot Clock on the ‘big screen’, I would also have gotten the 'Water Boy' to have gotten the remaining time off the Ref, set their own lil Stop Watch to whatever e.g. 47 seconds, subtracted ‘2’ seconds from that time & then told the Kicker there was 45 secs to go. The 'Water Boy' then gives the Kicker the respective timings that they require/prefer & the ball would be struck with '2' secs to spare (at least).
Having said that, I wouldn’t have taken the kick at goal on the ‘said’ occasion. It was highly unlikely given what had happened earlier in the game that the English were going to score a ‘worldy of a try’ from 1 end to the other, so just play territory/possession. If successful, the 3 points would have only increased the lead to 4, left time on the clock for a restart, given the English field position by allowing them a restart to compete for possession and the English could have pinched a match winning try. In stead of DMac going for the 3, I would have gone for the corner to play territory, possession & run the clock down. Kick for the corner, walk to the Line-Out (which is one of my bug bears when done against us!), catch & drive, 1 off runners, pick & go, keep possession & maybe even pick up another penalty. If an ensuing penalty is within the time which wouldn’t allow a restart then take the 3 points, call a scrum etc - game over.
Having said that, if a team is trailing and time is of the essence then they can get the kick done far more quickly than the 60 secs they use when trying to run the clock down. DMac’s brother, Marty, would take a kick in about 5-10 secs. He was very good & accurate to boot as well.
The 60 secs shot clock across the board also needs a bit of tweaking/re-thinking as there is a big difference from kicking a conversion from under/in-front the posts to having the Ball & Tee at the mark to indicate a kick for the 3 points to walking back to the 22 having scored a try in the corner having regained possession of a scoring try when the opposition or one of your (dumb) team mates has kicked/thrown the ball into the crowd.

Initially, I wanted a Shot Clock on the ‘big screen’ to enable it to be visible to the kicker but can you imagine if the opposition supporters could also see it & they started on the Countdown themselves? In certain games/countries, there would be none of that ‘Keep quiet. Respect the Kicker’ lark. It would be full volume 10, 9, 8, 7….& maybe sometimes even mis-leading so maybe a visible Shot Clock is not a good thing.
For me, once the Ref has made the mark, blown their whistle & pointed to the posts, that should be the end of the Refs involvement until signaling whether time has run out or the Kick/Conversion was successful etc. It should not be up to the Ref to give a ’10 second’ warning - hear me out.

If there is no visible Shot Clock on the ‘big screen’, I would also have gotten the Water Boy' to have gotten the remaining time off the Ref e.g 47 secs, subtracted ‘n’ seconds e.g. from the time that the Ref said, set their own lil Stop Watch to 45 secs & then told the Kicker there was 45 secs to go. The ‘Water Boy' then gives the Kicker the respective timings that they require/prefer so that the kick is struck within the safety margin e.g. 2 seconds, that the team/kicker prefer or the tactics influence.
Oh, and there should always be another of the team close by in case the Ball needs to be held/secured on the Tee or change the laws to allow the ‘Water Boy’ to do it.

The gameplan seemed little different from before. I guess it has worked (the quarter and semi last year) when our forwards are very dynamic and challenging the gain line in the centre around the rucks. But we didn’t dominate there regardless of how good the set piece was (the scrum NOT the line out). Reece, Telea and BB looked dangerous with ball in hand. Perofeta went quiet and didn’t give second receiver options in the last 20mins he was on the field. Contestable kicks were too long and allowed the escorts to screen too easily. Some good analysis rather than the usual opinionated positions about the ABs vs Eng. A lot of talk about establishing a culture and identity… really? When did the ABs ever have a problem with knowing what is expected of them? All that “connecting” and “themes”? I’d rather see some front foot dominance, or the theme could quickly become “losing”. The speed and openness of the attack in the SA vs Ireland game was a contrast to Dunedin. A scary contrast.

Sititi is certainly one for the future & I’m sure & hope that he will get his chance but Eden Park may be a game too soon, as well as some of the other of the 13 left in this season. It has taken a lot of great ABs many many seasons & games to feel at home. When did Amua first appear on the scene? Amua really came to prominence on the international scene when he scored the Hat-trick against England in the 1917 U20 RWC Final in Manchester (UK), was taken as an ‘apprentice’ on the ABs 2017 End of Year tour but is now really only cementing his place after a couple of years of losing his way. I was in Edinburgh in 1993 to see Jeff Wilson make his debut against Scotland where I think he even got MOTM with the added responsibilities of taking the kicks. The following week at Twickenham, he totally choked & died & (for me) that had a big impact on his early career. I remember Kaino, Nonu & a bunch of others all being pretty ‘bad’ at the start. They were no where the finished article when they made their first AB appearances & took years to develop. Isaia Toeava was one for me that was ‘burdened’ with too much hype too early day and could have done with more time as an ‘apprentice’ but instead was thrown in at the deep end, lost his spark/confidence & was discarded rather abruptly. Such a waste of talent. Some are naturals but others take time to being an AB, their role in the team, the responsibilities, pressures etc. For Sititi to have been named in the 32 says a lot but let’s not rush things too early or on too big a stage too soon. Let’s enjoy the walk before we try to run (too early)…

Some are just born for it and strive in pressure moments. I think sititi is one of those players from semi finals to the finals the moment was never too big for him I’m not saying he has to start but bring him off the bench and see what he brings cos there’s way too much evidence of young players excelling to not try it out!

    • @lovemysport7902
      @lovemysport7902 2 місяці тому

With regards to wingers & indeed most positions, it is horses for courses. In some cases, I agree that we should have 2 wingers of contrasting styles - power/strength vs speed etc but in other cases, 2 speedsters/dancers are good and other types of combos as well.
With regards to Wingers, what is important these days (for me) are wingers who come in looking for work which all of the outside backs in the ABs squad can do so I would be happy with any of them. Was the ability to jackle the difference? Was Caleb still tender from the knock to the ribs he got in the SRP Final? But yeah, give each of them opportunities to help one another develop. Keep them fresh & keep them motivated.
From a tactics perspective I would like the wingers to be versatile so they could effectively play as Blindside & Openside wings & change positions/sides accordingly/regularly during a game or even for a ‘set move’. Have the ‘power winger’ on the Blindside ready to run off the 9 or an inside pass from the 10 and the ‘speed’ winger out wide ready for the cross-field kick. If the ‘speed’ winger was also an ex Basketball/Aussie Rules player who would generally be able to leap & catch the ball safely in 2 hands above their heads then even better.
In the case of Leicester Fainga'anuku, tearing it up at Toulon (Top 14) as a 13/wing (mostly 13), if he and Reiko were in the team together, could they equally swap/switch between 13 & wing during a game? Could Reiko & Clarke even switch now if both playing for the ABs/Blues?
All teams/coaches/squads need options to pick a wider training squad, the apprentices/future, the touring squad, the starters & the finishers to make us as adaptable & un-predictable as possible to keep the opposition coaches guessing prior to kick-off & to keep the opponents on the field guessing during the game - Game Plan A, Game Plan B, Game Plan C, Game Plan D etc with Set Moves of A, B, C, D etc but always allowing to play what is in front of you. Individual skills, teamwork, eyes/ears, top 2 inches.
And things like that don’t happen at the start of a new coaching regime, the first time that the initial squad comes together, maybe even the first year in (because some of the remaining 13 tests, especially some of the away ones, this Calendar year are going to be pretty tough). It’ll take time, slowly but surely. The first game against the English in Dunedin was pretty good for me. The ABs played with a good/reasonable level of control, commitment, teamwork & skills for a first hit out as a group. And no cards was a good thing too.
I’m sure there will be a few things tried that won’t work at first so there’ll be a few hiccups along the way whether they’ll be ‘learnings’ (improvised/changed & retried) or simply discarded - who knows - but I’m looking forward to the 4 year ‘walk’ & have plenty of other ideas already written down…

Frustrating for England as that definitely felt like "the" opportunity for a win. I expect this week to be much tougher as whilst I am a fan of both Borthwick and this team I just feel the ABs under "Razor" will just adapt and improve more quickly.
In terms of England positives we got very close with a scrum that was struggling so little genuine front foot ball. It was two trys each and we showed both invention and intent in attack. Overall I think most of the team compared well with their AB opposites. Arguably only the second row significantly outshone theirs.
Both teams were missing players and given both kickers had poor games kicking I think one can cancel those factors out.
Myriad reasons for the loss but the main issues for us to address are the scrum and the lack of impact, certainly v ABs, of the bench. I also think we need to get both wings involved more. Both are skillful but physical and quick players comfortable off their wings.
I didn't pay the same attention to the ABs but it was impressive how quickly they were up to speed. Are their likely to be changes ahead of the second test, injury aside?
Good luck for this next one. I'm hoping that England can get a historic win and we can have a "decider" at Twickenham in the summer.

Many Springboks compete in overseas leagues, facing diverse playing styles and learning from top coaches from various nations.
