For some reason the French are magically powerful in that game a lot of times. I once played Japan and invaded France with ten times their numbers. I had WWI tech and the French were still using 1860s tech. I had full logistics and my army had full buffs and payment. Yet, despite all that, the French wiped out my entire army.
Did you have enough ships for the naval attack? The naval penalties is huge in the game compared to what you can field

It's good to know that even someone who streams Victoria 3 has no real idea why the combat system does what it does. Makes me feel better about savescumming every time there's a diplomatic play.
Chumm, btw lower taxes on the rich don’t affect reinvestment, it just matters how much their business makes and their profession type. Generally this is why taxing them is good for getting the most returns for taxation type and consumption tax. I’d recommend luxury goods tax.

Irl Opium made people spend more than half their salaries in the drug making them work less and far less efficiently and that is why the Chinese banned opium trade, meaning an embargo, declaring embargo to the UK should also trigger the Opium Wars.
But un the game opium does not give any malus to the population, kinda weird.

I’ve found that Victoria 3 is very ram heavy if that’s what you’re looking for. At least 16gb, but I’ve found more helps the game
